Facebook has purged more dissident political media pages today, this time under the pretense of protecting its users from “inauthentic activity”. In a statement co-authored by Facebook Head of Cybersecurity Nathaniel Gleicher (who also happens to be the former White House National Security Council Director of Cybersecurity Policy), the massive social media platform explained that it has removed “559 Pages and 251 accounts that have consistently broken our rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior.”

This “inauthentic behavior”, according to Facebook, consists of using “sensational political content – regardless of its political slant – to build an audience and drive traffic to their websites,” which is the same as saying they write about controversial things, and posting those political articles “in dozens of Facebook Groups, often hundreds of times in a short period, to drum up traffic for their websites.”

In other words, the pages were removed for publishing controversial political content and trying to get people to read it. Not for writing “fake news”, but for doing what they could to get legitimate indie media news stories viewed by people who might want to view it. The practice of sharing your material around in Facebook groups is common practice for most independent media content creators; I did it myself a lot in late 2016 and early 2017, and pretty much all my indie media peers at the time did too.

“For those of you who read what I write, you know that I did not violate any standards,” writes Terresa Monroe-Hamilton, whose personal profile and Facebook page for her political blog NoisyRoom.net were both deleted. “In fact, I don’t send out most of what I write. I send on big news links and a few memes. It was enough to get me banned and the pages are simply gone.”

“Facebook took down my page with nearly 70,000 followers, labeling it as ‘spam,’ when I have spent 4 years working to build that page up and using it to post the articles I wrote and videos of my reporting,” tweeted RT America’s Rachel Blevins. “This is so incredibly wrong and is affecting hundreds of similar pages.”

“And just like that 5 + years of hard work promoting ideas of peace and freedom have been erased,” wrote a Facebook user called John Liberty, who lost multiple pages about police accountability, cannabis legalization and libertarianism.

Two of the most high-profile pages which were shut down have probably been seen at some point by any political dissident who uses Facebook; the Free Thought Project, which had 3.1 million followers, and Anti-Media, which had 2.1 million. I’ve found useful information on both sites before, and despite disagreeing with them ideologically in some areas have found them both vastly more legitimate than anything you’ll find on Google News.

As if that wasn’t creepy enough, some of the accounts purged by Facebook appear to be getting censored on Twitter as well, bringing back memories of the August cross-platform coordinated silencing of Alex Jones. The aforementioned Anti-Media has now been suspended from Twitter just hours after tweeting about being removed from Facebook, along with its editor-in-chief Carey Wedler, and an independent activist named Patti Beers who had more than 30,000 Twitter followers has just been removed from both sites as well.

I have said it before and I will say it again: in a corporatist system, wherein there is no clear line between corporate power and government power, corporate censorship is government censorship. You can’t have a system wherein corporate lobbying and campaign finance amount to legalized bribery of elected officials, wherein massive Silicon Valley corporations form extensive ties with secretive government agencies in order to eclipse their competition, and then claim this is a matter of private corporations enforcing their own rules on their own private property. This is just what totalitarian government censorship looks like in a corporatist oligarchy.

Do you want a few Silicon Valley plutocrats determining what political speech constitutes “inauthentic activity” for you? Do you want a world in which the masses are herded into massive government-allied social media stables which are then regularly brought before the US Senate to pledge more iron-fisted censorship of problematic political speech? Do you want a world in which social media corporations are forced to make alliances with existing power structures in order to be allowed to grow? Do you want a world in which venues of political discourse are increasingly sterilized to favor the agendas of the ruling class? If not, the time to act is now.

Regardless of where you’re at on the political spectrum, if you oppose the status quo then opposing internet censorship of any political speech is now a matter of simple self defense. If this wasn’t obvious to you when they shut down Alex Jones, it should damn well be obvious to you now. If you want to change the existing system in any way which takes power away from those currently in power, your voice is next on the chopping block. They’re locking all the doors down as fast as they can to keep us trapped in this Orwellian oligarchy until they get us all killed by war or ecocide. If they shut down the public’s ability to share dissident information, they’ll have locked the final door. Don’t let them.

UPDATE: Free Thought Project has, like Anti-Media, now been removed from Twitter as well as Facebook. There definitely appears to be some kind of coordination or overlap between Twitter and Facebook censors.

  1. Caitlin, I know it is a tall order but I think it is very important: could you please start the transition from Twitter to somewhere else, like Mastodon? Preferably a non-Silicon Valley-based, non-centralized internet communication medium.

    I don’t see you or any of the anti-war movement leaders surviving on Twitter, Facebook, etc. after the American “Gleichschaltung” is complete.

    (Perhaps you can circumvent The Purge by just using Twitter and Facebook to post “Rated G” content and links to your uncensored content located elsewhere.)

        Nobody is getting banned from all social media. There are still outlets that Alex Jones and the like can go to. They are not as popular yet, but given the state of current unhappiness with the incumbents, the new platforms will grow.

        Since conspiracies are more conjecture less reality, and carry severe allegations, the accused should be innocent until proven guilty.

        Why anyone believes Alex Jones, who shills conspiratorial snake oil and sells man pills is beyond me. He’s a screaming football coach down 35-0 at halftime. There is not a conspiracy he won’t yell at you. He nearly believes them all. Moon landing, 911, Sandy Hook and many others. He makes money doing it.

      I sit at my computer and read an article on the NYT internet site that there is going to be a solar eclipse on December 1, and that this eclipse will be visible in certain locations on the surface of Mother Earth. The writer of the article lists several sources of astronomical information — observatories, university departments of astronomy, etc. No longer trusting the NYT to report truth, I read this same information on several diverse web sites, newspapers and MSM and alternative media. After observing all of this, I “believe with 100% certainty” that there will be an eclipse on Dec 1 that it will be visible in certain locations on Mother Earth.

      I “know” a “truth”, a something “about”, an “event that will occur in”, the future with absolute certainty! Yippee! I report this “truth” to other human beings that I know. They will remember what I have told them, and when that eclipse occurs they will remember what I told them turned out to be “true” (accurate). If I tell them more and more of these things, they will INEVITABLY come to “trust” that what I say in/about the future is/will turn out to be almost certainly “the truth”.

I fear by doing that the Corporate/Plutocratic narrative wins. What do you think is our best action to this latest travesty? (perhaps you can address this in another article?)

    1. If you can only ‘win’ by trying to use the Deep State and its Silicon Valley assets, while critiquing the same, then you’ve lost. Eventually, Those assets will target you.

      On principle, If you don’t ‘have to’ use Facebook et al, then you shouldn’t. I’m not going to save the (deserving) world. God is. I don’t need to compromise my principles in order to win.

  24. Notice how they always want to “protect” you. They aren’t stifling your constitutional rights of free and unfettered flow of political speech so necessary to the functioning of a democracy. No, that would be a bad thing! Perish that thought! No, they’re protecting you from confusing thoughts you shouldn’t lose sleep over, like punishing war criminals in our government or awakening people to their past crimes. And they know what those thoughts are, too!

    I think this shows how absolutely terrified our elites have become that they can see the torches and pitchforks coming, and yes perhaps the guillotines in their imaginings of a French style revolution as the masses get wise to their horrific crimes via the Internet. They never imagined they would be found out. Especially 911. Imagine in their psychopathic sick minds what would happen if a real investigation into 911 ever were to take place.

    So scared that they are willing to slam all the doors shut and shut down democracy itself and rule with an iron fist, with impunity and without pretense, because they can. This is the time when things will get very dangerous the more scared they get. They brought this on themselves leaving no option for peaceful reform.

  25. Co-ordination of censorship by different platforms is no surprise – they’re all connected to the PTB. Mass boycott might just wake them up, but that’s not going to happen. They have millions (billions?) hooked and most of those people will stay there. Suggest to friends or family that they close their accounts as a protest and they say they need it to ‘keep up with friends’ or ‘see what’s happening in the world’. The PTB have clearly won. Yet again.

It gives me the creeps to know that I participate in a discussion where someone can at the push of a button delete my side of the story on a whim, and I can’t even protest because his button is for keeps. Screw you, screw your platform and stick your button up yours. I left the Facebook circus like I would have left a sinking ship a long time ago. I’m still reading many articles like this one though. And if I was gifted which I am not, I would’ve found an honest site to publish my wisdom instead of making this low-life filthy rich.

    1. And it doesn’t just happen when using the enemies’ social networking tools. Those who are people’s champions are all the time killing communication that they don’t like. They sometimes peep about it, offering their explanation. They never make an effort to make their explanation for killing communication convincing however. Sometimes, I buy the line. A sole blogger, having no one to help him or her with the blog, will be (I imagine, but correct me if I’m wrong) a difficult time dealing with a flood of posts that include a flood of spam ‘if’ the blog that he or she oversees is popular. I have not experienced that. I rarely get a comment on my blog, let alone a torrent to deal with. But even blogs with many staff members slow down communication, all but killing it, claiming that they have no choice. One such website employs Akismet, I believe and the moderation is automated. But that’s new there. It seemed to be doing fine before. Now, popular regulars are complaining about seeing their comments disappear into moderation. If that ‘s necessary, then fine. But convince us that it is – while you’re pleading for donations to fight, ahem, censorship.

      Then there’s the fakers. But they are the enemy, in fact, and we can ignore their reasons or state reasons. I’ve been banned on a number of websites (CBC here in Canada, Common Dreams) and on other websites, like RT News, censorship happens to everyone willy nilly. RT couldn’t care less.

      1. Good to know. It happened to me toο at the Real News and Mercola’s health and it wasn’t automated, it was a reaction to a caustic truth. If you’re honest it’s best to let the conversation flow and let the commenters sort it out themselves. Censorship is counter-productive any way you look at it.

        1. Agreed. Mind you, How ‘do’ you deal with those who would subvert progressives’ efforts online? I’m just not sure that all of the efforts taken by those who self-identify as progressives are well-intentioned. As I said, they don’t make much of an effort to explain themselves, as though they were happy to have us out of their hair. Ego probably plays a role. They want to dominate the discourse. Then there’s negativity, whereby the negative person automatically disagrees with others just because they are ‘not’ saying what he or she is saying. Progressive, alas, doesn’t mean ‘perfect’.

        2. Consortium News is going establishment, even if it carries some solid writers. In a recent post there by CN, reporting that it has added some new writers (most whom I think will add to the quality of CN) to its current line-up, I left numerous short comments. Every one was disappeared. When I discovered that, I left one more that may or may not disappear. I don’t trust Joe Lauria.
