After news broke that Robert Mueller had turned in his final report without recommending any further indictments, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow began frantically retweeting blue-checkmarked Twitter pundits who claimed that since nobody knows the contents of the report yet, the news that the number of Americans indicted for conspiring with the Russian government is set at zero doesn’t matter.

Well guess what, Rachel? We know what the report contains now.

US Attorney General William Barr has sent a letter to congressional officials which you can read here. It contains the following unequivocal quote:

The Special Counsel’s investigation did not find that the Trump campaign or anyone associated with it conspired or coordinated with Russia in its efforts to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election. As the report states: “[T]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.”

A footnote on the document clarifies that the Mueller investigation defined coordination with the Russian government very broadly, to include not just overt coordination but any “agreement—tacit or express—between the Trump Campaign and the Russian government on election interference.” No such agreement, tacit or otherwise, was found to have taken place.

So that’s it then. The central and foundational claim of the Russiagate conspiracy theory has been found to have been completely baseless. The report asserts that Russia hacked and distributed Democratic Party emails (a claim that the public has still yet to see any hard evidence for), and “did not draw a conclusion – one way or the other” whether Trump committed obstruction of justice in the investigation of baseless collusion allegations, but the central and foundational Russiagate claim that Trump and the Kremlin conspired to steal the 2016 election has been killed. Finito. Case closed. Debate over.

And Trump is loving every second of it.

“No Collusion, No Obstruction, Complete and Total EXONERATION. KEEP AMERICA GREAT!” tweeted America’s reality TV star president exactly as you would expect him to, taking some creative license with the actual contents of Barr’s letter.

This is your life for the next 594 days, America. You can expect to hear over and over and over again, from today until November 2020, that the president was victimized for over two years by a “WITCH HUNT” which was “COMPLETE and TOTAL FAKE NEWS!” All Trump will have to do to get re-elected is keep his economy narrative going and repeat the claim that he’s been unjustly persecuted by the establishment “swamp”.

And it will work, because that claim will not be unfounded.  As much of a corrupt establishment crony as Trump has proven himself to be, he does indeed have all the facts he needs to successfully sell the narrative that the political/media class has spent over two years pushing a baseless conspiracy theory that the highest levels of the US government had been infiltrated by the Kremlin, and he can indeed claim persecution and victimization in the process. He can easily leverage this into sympathy and support in his reelection campaign, and can use it to reinforce his tarnished image as an enemy of the beltway swamp. Those who’ve been selling the Russiagate narrative handed him this weapon.

So thanks, Rachel Maddow. Thanks Adam Schiff, Maxine Waters and Eric Swalwell. Thanks CNN and MSNBC, Washington Post and New York Times. Thanks supposed progressives like Bernie Sanders and The Young Turks. Thank you to everyone who spent the first half of Trump’s term helping to push the Russiagate narrative, thereby helping to ensure another four years of this asshole advancing longstanding establishment agendas of war, nuclear brinkmanship and ecocide. Thank you so much for helping to inflict that upon our planet with no regard for the inevitable consequences of your actions.

So are any of the aforementioned offenders admitting any fault on this? Actually, it’s a surprisingly mixed bag.

Sure, you’ve got more Russiagaters than I can count moving the goalposts to possible financial crimes and frantically grasping at the straws of Mueller’s words in Barr’s letter regarding potential obstruction of justice, “while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.” You’ve got MSNBC analyst and “Saint Mueller Preserve Us” t-shirt salesman Malcolm Nance starting up a whole new conspiracy theory that Barr has committed the “greatest scandal in history to coverup the greatest scandal in history,” I guess implying that Barr is lying about the contents of a report that will with absolute certainty be viewed and verified by other people. You’ve got some trying to pretend that Russiagaters never cared about Russiagate at all anyway.

But you’ve also got CNN’s Reliable Sources host Brian Stelter sharing Matt Taibbi’s excellent article titled “It’s official: Russiagate is this generation’s WMD“, which describes the mass media’s spectacular failures to ask the questions that needed to be asked and demand the evidence that needed to be demanded for the claims advanced in the Russiagate narrative. You’ve got NBC’s Ken Dilanian, an actual CIA asset who has been eagerly advancing the establishment Russia narrative, said that “this is a total legal exoneration of the president. Congress will want to know more, of course. But the topline: No conspiracy, no obstruction.” This is highly unusual behavior from such stalwart empire loyalists, and it may be taken as a turning point of sorts on this particular aspect of this particular subject, due solely to the total destruction of any basis for their previous narrative.

But, of course, the damage is already done. Trump has been handed a powerful political weapon which may have ensured his reelection to the White House, and, far, far worse, a new cold war with Russia is now underway which threatens the life of every organism on this earth, facilitated by a political/media class who convinced the public that they could hurt the president by demanding that he take a more hawkish posture toward Russia. That Pandora’s box won’t be un-opened by these new revelations.

This should be the end of the mass media. In anything resembling a sane world, Rachel Maddow would be unloading her desk into a cardboard box today, and Aaron Maté would become the most respected and highest-paid journalist in America.

This should be the end of the Democratic party. This dismal state of affairs is their fault, from the content of the leaked emails to their handling of it. They have had choices on the way to clean up their act but, they have blankly refused at every juncture. Not one thing has changed since the emails revealed that the DNC rigs its primaries, and yet here we are in the middle of another fake primary with everyone going along with it like it’s a real thing. It’s weird. In a healthy democratic republic the party would be dead already, and a new one would’ve taken its place fueled by fresh energy and enthusiasm but the donor-class corruption is so deeply entrenched that that possibility has seemed like a fantasy.

For now. The next couple of days are going to be very important. As the clamoring din of Russiagate falls into the memory hole, a large empty space will open up. As the pundits scramble to find the Next Big Thing to blare through the screens, the people will be left to their own devices for a few precious moments. They won’t know what to think. They may even have some of their own thoughts for once. The media landscape will resemble a demolition site. So why not use this space to push forward some new exciting ideas. Space means possibilities. Space means something new can be built. After the crushing disappointment of finally finding out that the whole thing was a bust, two years have been lost to the bumbling ineptitude of Pelosi and Schumer, and now impeachment is off the table, what has anyone got to lose? Let’s try something new.

  1. President Trump is very likely to go after the ” democrats ” to get his revenge for the next two years and his supporters will love every minute of it!!

  2. I just have a nagging feeling this may all be a pyrrhic victory. I never from day one believed in the bullshit about Russia, and have been rudely banned from big well known democratic websites for very politely disagreeing. But as Matt Tabbai has pointed out, there have been dire consequences for past propaganda campaigns such as the death toll in Iraq. Whose numbers have I believe exceeded the Rwandan massacres and are challeging Pol Pot.

I went looking around well known democratic party lackey websites, and gawd almighty are they still clinging to Russia s the devil and engaging in abuse of sematics and normal language to keep the faith going. I see “experts” being quoted in the local newspaper who were 100% wrong to begin with. Media figures talk to the same failed media figures.

I see Ro Kahanna and Bernie Sanders validate Russia as the modern Satan. Ro even praised Maddow the propaganist feritiizing the field for the acceptance and demand for war. Oh well…

    1. “You’re Never Too Old To Learn Something Stupid” – a good piece , though I would’ve added some punctuation to the title : “You’re Never Too Old To Learn Something , Stupid”

  3. Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a blowjob he got from a fan girl, and remained in office, therefore the “Impeachment Show” has not been cancelled for good. Probably postponed to the next lame duck session of Congress post November 2020. Trumpy’s second term will then be blamed on the Dems for lack of unity on their presidential ticket nonsense again like in 2016 and the “show” will continue on for the moronic masses who even after being shown the obvious rigging in these so -called “elections” will continue to believe.

In Lewis Caroll,s tale, Alice confesses that: one can,t believe impossible things. The Queen disagrees: Why, sometimes I have believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast. Trumps base believers.

  4. The American Public now waits in mindless stupidity to be told what to believe next.

  5. “The President is very much a figurehead – he wields no real power whatsoever. He is apparently chosen by the government, but the qualities he is required to display are not those of leadership but those of finely judged outrage. For this reason the President is always a controversial choice, always an infuriating but fascinating character. His job is not to wield power but to draw attention away from it

On those criteria Zaphod Beeblebrox is one of the most successful Presidents the Galaxy has ever had. He spent two of his ten Presidential years in prison for fraud. Very very few people realize that the President and the Government have virtually no power at all, and of these very few people only six know whence ultimate political power is wielded. Most of the others secretly believe that the ultimate decision-making process is handled by a computer. They couldn’t be more wrong.”-Douglas Adams.

Trump is the best distraction the ruling cabal could have ever hoped for.

  6. And yet the media has nothing to say of the obvious collusion of Trump and Israel. Kushner, Adelson, Saban, Netanyahu are laughing at the fools and how their puppet is able to distract the morons from their agenda. The whole “Russian collusion” nonsense is a giant smokescreen for the dimwitted masses who believe in the mainstream media.

  7. No matter how many years of what has been undoubtedly seen, no matter how many thousands of violations of what was clearly done even though the truth was known, we are still left with such vomit-worthy provisions of cover as the following: “Matt Taibbi’s excellent article titled ‘It’s official: Russiagate is this generation’s WMD,’ which describes the mass media’s spectacular failures to ask the questions that needed to be asked and demand the evidence that needed to be demanded for the claims advanced in the Russiagate narrative.” By God, and damn it, this wasn’t because of “the mass media’s spectacular failures” – again! This was because they all colluded completely and blatantly. Period! Virtually every time such a point is reached, people of any prominence, like Matt Taibbi, ruin, through cowardice, another chance to unequivocally clarify the maniacal level of what took place by offering the offenders credibility – on a platter. Why do they do this? To remain safe? To maintain status? For whatever sickening reasons they do this, it fully serves to fulfill a continuance of the same manufactured world stage pictures those in control create. These were conspiratorial actions on a worldwide scale, where almost everyone knew they were Lying and Boldly cramming it into our faces, regardless of any destructive magnitude – because now they can, without (current) repercussion. For those who have the ability, why not speak Truth to Power – without destroying your voice and message in the process?

    1. Hear hear! Sugarcoating this blatant criminality is just as bad as the original crimes. They know exactly what they’re doing and to pretend it was anything but deliberate is to encourage it to continue happening. Which it will. Over and over again.

  8. whatever Trump has been doing — the whole list of crimes against humanity and outright gangsterism — is exactly what his fake enemies want him to do anyways. so do you see now how they are fake enemies, especially when it comes to foreign policies? Whatever Trump night have been inclined to do, against the Deep State, get quickly rejected and the neocons and the neolibs of the Deep State just continues their fake fight.

  9. Back in 2017, when Rachel Sellout Madcow inferred on national TV that I was an Albanian bot working for Trump and Putin, I tried several times to contact her and her minions, to get that inference retracted, and was completely ignored. Now that the Mueller report has come out and insists that there is no collusion with Russia, I tried again, making four submissions on her MSNBC website. All four if them were ERASED when I hit the Submit button.
I’m now inclined to file a lawsuit.

    1. Good one Guillermo. See my comment there also.

  10. I really expected some accusations of financial chicanery for Trump. Maybe there were none as apparently the US Justice Dept holds that one cannot charge a sitting president. Maybe there is some dirt that is not in the report but which may come out after Trump leaves office?

    1. Keep grasping at straws, dummy.

    2. The Southern District of New York is still investigating Trump’s financial malfeasance. This is what some people suggested all along: No collusion with Russia, but decades of financial shenanigans overlooked by so-called “regulators.” See, for example, the chapter on gambling in Chris Hedges’s America: The Farewell Tour. I remember reading Andy Logan’s columns in The New Yorker in the 1980s (back when TNY had some credibility) about Trump’s magical ability to keep getting money from the banksters.

  12. For those that think this is all over–don’t. These liberal loonies will come up with a 100 ways to sundown, to keep it going. And, don’t think this is a shoo-in issue for Trump’s easy election in 2020. We are presently in a society that is swept by any wind or wave into whatever is promoted next.

  13. Hillary, Schumer, DeBlasio , Pelosi & other agents of another country will speak at AIPAC. Free Palestine.

  14. C’mon, Caitlin, where’s the thanks to Hillary? Not satisfied with losing to the least-liked, least respected, openly batshit crazy candidate ever, she whips out the tired old “RED herring” excuse for her own corruption and ineptitude, launching a full-tilt wave of hysteria that would have made Joe McCarthy proud, and gives the repulsive moron a second term. How big a loser do you have to be to lose TWICE to the NEXT BIGGEST LOSER, while making a laughingstock of your party and moving the entire country one big step closer to domestic implosion and international explosion? It takes serious excavation and demolition to “bury the bar” that low. With all due respect and credit to a supporting cast of thousands, surely a feat of that magnitude deserves some kind of special recognition.

    1. If Israel was colluding, it would be with HRC, the loser, not Trump. There never was a chance this “investigation” would lead to indictments, Mr. Trump may have fallen to deep state, and I’m certainly not supporting him, but look at the big pictue. Going into the election cycle, the DNC rigged for exactly one candidate, and she with the direct aid of at least the FBI, CIA and NSA, had a fake “dossier” produced, after having fixed her own race.
The fact the dossier was fake, has been known for two years, by anyone who followed the investigation. The fact the DNC server wasn’t hacked, was proven when the allegation was made, the download baud rate proved someone downloaded the data on a memory devise, no hacking can achieve direct download speed.
All the anti-Trumpers had to do was stay on message, “where’s the drain going, why isn’t it happening, when will we see indictments for those riggers”, and there would have been pressure. Great care was taken in ensuring this outcome would be, HRC was a “loose cannon”, clinically damaged, as easily seen by her actions for all her adult life, can any woman actually suggest her actions, vis-à-vis Billy bob’s were anything less than “simply self-serving”?
The fact is, the U.S. was invaded by the Bolsheviks, the Red Brigades, at the time Russia was, however Russia was in the throes of a civil war, and they easily overtook control, and one by one, eliminated their prey.
We were in the throes of government assuming power, establishing a central bank in violation of article 1, section 8 of the Constitution, turning to paper money, the “central banking, the lead into an eventual “world bank”.
Wilson avidly took in many in his administration, FDR was completely infiltrated, and all “America’s money”, our whole monetary system, was stolen, and given over to private bankers.
The primary power of “deep state” is their control of “trade reserve currency”, and their ability to tax the whole trading world, by inflation. This is the oldest game in totalitarian empire, played at the time, as the most modern way to facilitate the transfer of wealth from the middle class producers, to top tier, rulers.
Nixon inherited Vietnam, and wanted to end it, knowing well, it wouldn’t, couldn’t be won, but was fighting both parties, and “state”. His chief economics adviser, Stein, stated in a conversation, “if it can’t go on forever, it will stop”, speaking of the costs and finances. That was Nixon’s deciding note, and he went forward quietly, and ended the war, despite the press.
“Stein’s Law” has been applied many times since, and everyone, all sides of aisles, should pay close attention to this. We got our monetary system stolen, at 22,50 per ounce, troy, gold turn in, in ’33, when it was calculated at least three quarters were in, the window was made, and after that, holding gold coin or bullion was criminal. At the same time, FDR summarily re-established gold at 35 dollars per ounce, inflating our money supply by 65%, devaluing all circulating money inversely proportional.
The equity of “forced sale of gold at 22.50, is easily seen by the fact, silver coin didn’t reach “real value” of gold, at 35$, until 64, and then, 35$ per ounce was a statement, it traded in the world close to 70-75 per ounce, troy(12 troy ounces to a troy pound, 5760 grains to the troy pound, with 7000 grains to an avoirdupois, or commercial pound.
Deep State is not a conspiracy, it is merely the assumption of office, both hired, appointed, and elected, by like minded “Bolshevik taught” believers in one world government, and with the common goal, taught, they each do their work as necessary, and they produce the outcome we see.
The destruction of the Republic began with the end of Madison’s term, and the electing of James Monroe, whose nature can be ascertained by his “Monroe doctrine”, stating essentially, “Europe has raped and pillaged the world for centuries, it’s our turn now, and we reserve the right to rape and pillage the Americas, without contention”.
The “war of northern aggression” was arrived at, precisely because the enormous southern plantations utterly refused to relinquish their own connections for trade, with Europe, and allow Wall Street to take over the connecting and arranging, knowing the profit would be skimmed off the top.
It was only at that point, the North, actually chose to be “anti-slave”. Many states were, some weren’t, but the truth is, it was all about the money, and who would profit.
We haven’t had honest money since the American war on Spain, and our indebted spending on that war.
Woodward and Bernstein were exactly right, to find the culprits, “follow the money”. Why, Caitlan, aren’t you following the money?
I returned to the States in 63 at six, and was outraged at the lies I saw before me, having learned to read from my dad’s childhood books, written in the teens and twenties. Even at six, I could see the destruction of fiat currency, “Mary Poppins” had debuted, anyone who wanted, could fully understand capitalism, its nature, and the fact it is a “natural law”, and to operate in it, pretending one uses real capital in exactly “anti-capitalist”, and tears down infrastructure, long invested in, as rapidly as it raises capital, when invested in real value.
Every single effort around the world, to avoid our “inflation tax”, BRIC, AIIB, SGR, all the gold investment banks eagerly sought American support, knowing it would bring us out of our “great depression” we are in, but more importantly, it would demand we ultimate, re-capitalize, and return to real money.
The U.S. has utterly refused, because to do so, would end its ability to tax world trade, by inflation. Any high school student getting B minuses, planning on being a book-keeper, can easily show, we’ve long surpassed our “tipping point”, economically, but the world didn’t want to absorb all our debt by itself, but was willing to absorb the share left, by our resuming real money, and knowing much would be recouped by our debt payments in real money.
The world has established new means of fiscal exchange, based on rational economics, and we continue to operate, not even servicing our debt, and thus adding to principle, and paying “compound interest”, divesting the nation of capital.
The central issue for America, is we have no rule of law over a central not federal government, and it has no concerns for the country it has run into the ground. We are fractionated, incapable of seeing the one issue tying all Americans together, our money is stolen, all of ours, and the thieves will leave with it, when we collapse.
Liars know, once one starts living in lies, they compound, multiply, and ultimately, become so many, no rational person can maintain control of his own, or even enumerate them, and will trip and fall over them. We had a Nation, when we began to live on lying money, but to prevent the facts from drawing out an uprising, we had to be divided, and no one does it like the “Bolsheviks”. We could easily see a substantial uprising today, but it would be 17 factions, with as much animosity to each other, as to “deep state”, and this was deliberately delivered to us.
We, America, have one single enemy: the Bolsheviks who rule us, as much by bureaucratic edict, as by un-Constitutional law. If we all chose to bind to the Constitution, we could easily end their power, and we would have a chance at negotiating a rational government, if we removed the “Bolsheviks, and their support, socialism, and communism”, as antithetical to a “free and independent Nation”.

The True Believers will be flogging Russiagate no matter what the truth is; listening to the likes of David Corn at this point is worse than wasting time: it’s allowing the destruction of brain matter and capacity to use what’s left.

  20. “‘did not draw a conclusion – one way or the other’ whether Trump committed obstruction of justice”

For what it’s worth, I think I know why. Trump performed acts that could be construed as obstruction, or could be considered below threshold. Mueller didn’t want to give his opinion because all he could really say is that he didn’t find sufficient evidence to indict. That statement would be considered pejorative by Republicans, and a cop-out by Democrats. Therefore, he left the legal argument regarding exactly what would or wouldn’t constitute obstruction by POTUS to others, finally, perhaps, SCOTUS.

  21. Won’t matter. Trump plays to his base, his base cheers. But his base isn’t big enough. Trump has completely alienated the middle of the spectrum. And of course, then thee are the rabid Democrats. It doesn’t matter. Trump can crow about ‘witch-hunt’ all he wants. The American people already decided that was true. There’s long been a majority that tell pollsters they didn’t believe in Russiagate and that they’d wish the Democrats would shut up about it. A few of the more perceptive Democrats caught on to that in the last weeks of the last election. So, this doesn’t change any minds. The 40% who like Trump will cheer. The 55% who can’t stand him will mark off another day on their calendars until the next election which Trump is going to lose big. Trump’s going to lose the popular vote by much more than last time, and those Democrat states that rebelled against Hillary go back to the Democrats and people will be talking more about the Democrat Electoral College lock that they used to talk about right after Obama won and the Democrats will drop any notions of getting rid of it.
    ————–
By this point, most Americans aren’t listening to Trump and don’t care what he Twits. They’ve made up their minds about him. If America had a decent democratic system we wouldn’t be stuck with him for almost another two years.

    1. “Trump’s going to lose the popular vote by much more than last time”

He’s suffering big-time demographic losses…. 4 years of his reliably-voting aged supporters dying while four years of youngsters turning 18. The Democrats will probably choose someone bad enough to make it closer than it should be, but unless there’s cheating in the electronic vote counting, I don’t think he has a chance.

Then let’s start an Investigation into Clinton emails, Obama Administration involvement in Russiagate, illegally obtained FISA Warrants, the origins of Gucifer 2.0, the relationship between top level elected and non elected Intelligence Officials from the UK, AUS, Ukraine and other countries who clearly exhibited bias against Russia and promoted stories that ramped up the Cold War promoting Russiagate.
Then let’s get to the bottom of the murder of Seth Rich, the potential espionage by the Awan Brothers assisted by DWS, the failure of the FBI to examine the DNC computers and question Brian Pagliano about HRC computers.

    1. Actually it is a very interesting article – I wonder if you read it. The final paragraphs are pertinent:

“By asserting that the issue is only whether or not he directly colluded with the Kremlin plot, Trump has diverted attention from the fact that he facilitated an assault on his own country. That may or may not have been illegal. But it was betrayal. It was treachery.

Mueller’s job was to seek out possible crimes to prosecute. It was not to evaluate actions that did not rise to the level of criminality. Nor was it his charge to tell the public the whole truth.

Yet so much of the truth is already out there. And the bottom line was established before Mueller submitted his report: Trump committed what is probably the most significant political misdeed in American history. The public did not need the Mueller report to confirm this. The foundation of this scandal—Trump’s villainy—has for long resided within plain sight. ”

The excessive schadenfreude over being “right” about the investigation (which has not been conclusively demonstrated, since the issue in the investigation is primarily concerned with criminal acts) leaves open the question of what Russian interference means for American democracy. The problem is, of course, that the word “collusion” can mean many things, and is seldom carefully defined in the context in which it is used.

But once everyone here finishes congratulating themselves about how prescient they were, what exactly is supposed to happen? Do they have any positive or workable vision for the future of the US. Everything I am reading here seems rather short-sighted.

      1. Good question. Let’s gloat and dump on Maddow and MSNBC and say we told you so but then what.

      2. Nothing David Corn says is interesting. He and his rag that does a terrible injustice not it’s namesake should both be flushed from the public conversation.

      3. Trump “facilitated an assault on his own country?” Have you been asleep these past few days? Have you failed to grasp what Caitlin and other clear thinkers have been saying for the past two years? There is no real evidence of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Perhaps you still think that the IRA troll farm was a Kremlin-run operation or that Guccifer 2.0 is a real person. There is NO evidence to support such beliefs, despite what your favorite Russia-hating pundits may say. To think otherwise puts you in a class with 9/11 truthers and climate change deniers.

      4. I note with wry amusement that you don’t actually tell us dimwits what this “most significant political misdeed in history” is.

    2. David Corn is still alive? I haven’t read him in decades. He sold out at least that long ago. Seriously, he got on the Dem money machine back during the Cheney presidency and became completely useless.

        I agree.

      2. David Corn is a regular on Mother Jones, along with Kevin Drum, Mother Jones used to be sensible and readable, But thevr gone hysterical over Trump. so I only scan it now.
