There’s a wildly under-appreciated clip of news footage from Thursday’s general election in the UK that, now that everyone’s had some time to emotionally process the emotional fallout from that depressing night, needs more attention.

Labour MP and chronic left-puncher Jess Phillips appeared on Channel 4 to talk about how devastated she was about the news of exit polls showing her party’s crushing defeat, except the cameras switched on before she was prepared and caught her in the middle of a joyful chuckle. It took several seconds and the overt reminders from the show’s hosts to put on a “straight face” and act emotional before she could conceal her cheery mood as Corbyn’s Labour leadership was trampled underfoot by odious empire lackey Boris Johnson.

“Good evening Jess,” said the program’s host Krishnan Guru-Murthy. “How are you feeling as these results unfold?”

Watching the stumbling improvisation that came next feels like walking into a room full of awkward silence when your supposed friends had just been saying mean things about you, or seeing your spouse conspicuously jump away from an attractive coworker when you drop by the office.

Phillips, still unaware that the cameras were now rolling, did not interrupt the delighted guffaw she’d been enjoying.

“Can you hear me Jess Phillips?” the host asked over nervous tittering from the audience. “It’s Krishnan.”

“I can hear you, sorry,” Phillips said after a moment, literally putting her hand over her mouth for a few seconds to hide her giant shit-eating grin.

“Straight face,” said Guru-Murthy, who then apparently realized that this was a bizarre thing to say and added “Actually you don’t have to have a straight face, umm, on this show. Umm… what are you thinking?”

“Oh are you talking to me now? Sorry that wasn’t clear,” said Phillips after a pause, her face now finally somewhat straightened out. “Sorry, I’m really tired. What I’m thinking is… it’s, it’s just totally devastating isn’t it? It’s totally devastating that all the people that I see every day, they’re gonna have nowhere to turn. I mean, I should probably do that thing where we all pretend that we’re gonna wait and see if the results are better than we thought, but it feels like a kick in the stomach.”

Jess Phillips had not been acting like a woman who felt devastated, and she had certainly not been acting like a woman who felt like she’d been kicked in the stomach. Jess Phillips had been acting like a woman on her third strawberry daiquiri down at the pub with a couple of hilarious mates.

“I’m just waiting actually, I mean, for your thoughts,” Guru-Murthy said after an awkward pause. “I mean, you look emotional, and upset, and that’s understandable.”

Guru-Murthy was lying. At no time did Phillips look either emotional or upset.

“Jess it’s just that you look very emotional, and we know you, we know you’re a normal, sane person, so it’s very confusing,” host Katherine Ryan bullshitted when Phillips struggled to hear what Guru-Murthy had said.

“I am very emotional,” Phillips lied. “But not just for me or for the Labour Party. I’m emotional for the people that the Labour Party was invented to help.”

The audience, probably relieved to have a taste of something that isn’t intensely awkward and disturbing, erupted in applause.

For months the imperial media have been loudly anointing Phillips as the establishment choice to replace the unabashedly socialism-minded Corbyn, as Kit Knightly described for Off-Guardian back in March. This coronation-by-media continues today with outlets ranging from The Guardian to Daily Mail to Telegraph placing her on the short list to assume leadership of the Labour Party over the last couple of days.

After an anti-imperialist, pro-Palestinian socialist was magically thrown into role of Opposition leader by an extraordinary accident in 2015, Phillips leapt into her role as outspoken Corbyn critic by publicly telling him “I won’t knife you in the back, I’ll knife you in the front.” Despite this vow, Phillips proceeded to steadfastly knife Corbyn in the back by fanning the flames of incredibly disingenuous smears against his leadership, elevating the imaginary Labour antisemitism crisis to such a cartoonish extent that earlier this year she proclaimed that a tweet saying “Palestine Lives” from Young Labour “is antisemitic and it has to stop.” This malicious termiting continued into the final days before the general election, with Phillips criticizing Corbyn for not responding adequately to claims about antisemitism in the Labour Party by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis.

Phillips’ hot mic moment, and the mad scramble of the show’s perception-managing pundits to clean it up, provides us with a brief glimpse behind the phony persona that the empire’s political/media class put on for us. Should Bernie Sanders by some Corbyn-like miracle overcome the rigged primaries and receive the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, we may be absolutely certain we’ll see a campaign to sabotage his run and force a loss to Trump in the US elections next year. And we may be absolutely certain they’ll cackle about it just as Jess Phillips did when she thought the cameras were off.

These people aren’t like you and me. They don’t care about truth, and they don’t care about human beings. They rose to the positions they occupy within media and politics by consistently demonstrating that they’ll do whatever it takes to advance the interests of the oligarchic empire while giving the people the bare minimum possible to prevent an insurrection. They’re where they’re at precisely because they don’t care about truth or people. They care about their own dominance within our sick dominator culture, and when they achieve it, they smile, and they celebrate, and they laugh.

Sometimes the guardians of empire make little mistakes. Sometimes they accidentally allow an anti-imperialist to lead one of their major parties. Sometimes they accidentally get caught in mid-guffaw when they’re meant to be pretending to be heartbroken. Whenever those holes appear it’s important to pay attention to them, and to shove as many rays of light through them as possible before they are closed.

  1. Great article and I really enjoyed reading your content. Keep uploading such content.

  2. Well, Channel 4 News is a liberal British media outlet, so your assertions don’t square with me. I don’t watch it by the way, but I have never considered it a particularly bad source of news. It’s one of the better MSM news outlets.

I disagree with the suggestion that Krishnan Guru-Murthy was “lying”. Jess Phillips is not a politician I have ever liked, but some empty laughter at the beginning of this film doesn’t really prove anything.

And I don’t like the suggestion suggestion that these journalists “don’t care about truth, and they don’t care about human beings.”

They are human beings themselves and I think they probably have at least some degree of professional integrity. You have zero proof for your assertion Caitlin.

I question how an Australian who lives in Australia can really have a proper view on this. And why is it of interest to you? Is politics in Australia so boring that you have to criticise our media?

    1. John, how would you describe Guru-Murthy’s statement that Philips looked “… emotional, and upset, and that’s understandable…”? Perhaps scripted would have been a kinder, but just as accurate description. The same script as his colleague, by the sound of it. Do you really think she looked emotional and upset?
How would C4 News being a “liberal media outlet” set it outside the definition of MSM?
Perhaps it’s a case of different standards as “at least some degree of professional integrity” seems to be okay with you. Personally I think journalists should be held to a much higher standard of journalistic integrity than “at least some degree”.
Regarding your closing questions, does one have to be British and living in Britain to have a proper view on this? Does that rule out Britons living abroad, such as Jonathan Cook, the award-winning British journalist now living in Nazareth whose writing also features in several international outlets? If not, you might be interested in his related piece entitled Corbyn’s Defeat has slain the left’s last illusion (link included in one of the comments below). One thing he points out in it, which you seem unaware of is that the British media is owned by, as he puts it, globe-spanning corporations. His analysis clearly shows the British media’s role in this and other elections. Because it’s not just this election. Perhaps you remember the godfather of Tony Blair’s daughter Rupert Murdoch’s Sun newspaper “winning the election for Labour”. So I would say it’s of interest to anyone of any nationality living anywhere on the planet in part because of a thing called globalisation.
Finally, it seems by your phrase “our media” that you’re labouring under a misconception. It’s not ours, it’s theirs, a point which Jonathan Cook perceptively and sincerely laments. Which is also a point Ms Johnstone is making.

      1. Thanks Tavvy! Your response was well-reasoned and superbly articulated!

  3. Almost everyday I run into Ms Johnstone’s articles on new websites. Although many readers ( and other authors ) never comment on her platform, they admire her work tremendously. That is what consistently telling the truth does; it gets passed around. Thank You, Ms Johnstone and Tim, too!

  5. Jonathan Cook’s article on the UK rigged election ends with ….
“We must head to the streets – as we have done before with Occupy, with Extinction Rebellion, with the schools strikes – to reclaim the public space, to reinvent and rediscover it. Society didn’t cease to exist. It wasn’t snuffed out by Thatcher. We just forgot what it looked like, that we are human, not machines. We forgot that we are all part of society, that we are precisely what it is.

Now is the time to put away childish things, and take the future back into our hands.”
    ————
See you in the streets. Don’t forget goggles and your gas mask.

  6. Off-topic, but I got an email from Chelsea Manning Legal Fund. They say it’s her birthday, and she’s still in jail on the infuriating obvious abuse of grand jury system and insane ability of judges to jail people for disobedience. They have a new petition:

    https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/sign-the-petition-free-chelsea-manning-now

  7. What is even more shocking than the release of this “smoking gun” evidence that the US government wasted two trillion dollars and killed more than three thousand Americans and more than 150,000 Afghans while lying through its teeth about the war is that you could hear a pin drop in the mainstream media about it. Aside from the initial publication in the Washington Post, which has itself been a major cheerleader for the war in Afghanistan, the mainstream media has shown literally no interest in what should be the story of the century. Please peruse this entire article here:

  8. I have no doubt that if Bernie manages to win the Democratic nomination, his campaign will be sabotaged by the party’s centrist leaders and their servants in the media. As much as they may claim to hate Trump, in their hearts they would prefer four more years of him over a “democratic socialist,” president. The Dem centrists maintain their positions of power by pleasing their true constituents—corporations and wealthy donors.

    1. Indeed, some have explicitly said they would back Trump over Sanders.

    2. In cases where a lefty has defeated a corporate fascist in the Dem primaries, the Dem party has then gladly sacrificed that lefty in the general election. It hasn’t happened at the Presidential level, as the Dems anti-democracy brigade has been successful in nominating only corporate fascists for years now. But it has happened at lower levels like Senate elections. When pushed, the Dems will show that their number one goal is to make sure that no pro-human candidates ever reach office, even if that means backing a Republican.

But then again, Trump is so hated, I’m not sure that would work. Would Hillary and Biden coming out to attack Bernie and tell people to vote for Trump really work? That’s too hard of a u-turn in the propaganda, and besides, nobody really likes these corporate fascist Dems anyways. Hillary already lost the ‘most hated’ contest head to head with Trump.

  9. Thank you, as always, Caitlin (and Tim). My favorite paragraph of this piece is the next-to-last one. Yes, psycho/sociopaths are “people”, but they make the world a measurably worse place, and we are undeniably better than them. On Medium, Kevin Gosztola just called out the Committee to Protect Journalists for their indefensible classification of Julian Assange as “not a journalist”, but Gosztola also refers to the organization as “laudable” and “respected”. Didn’t you shame the CPJ for its recent cowardly mistreatment of Max Blumenthal? I don’t care what “good work” CPJ, Shamnesty International, or any other imperial NGO occasionally does by accident/coincidence. I’m a dedicated purity tester, and anyone who has a problem with that can shriek at my “privileged” hand. Criticizing purity tests is the ultimate refuge of hopeful/hopeless lesser-of-two-evilsists.

    1. Right on. I’m so sick of having my opinions dismissed as “purity tests”. What they call purity testing, I call having a line I won’t cross. They seem to have no limit to what evil they will tolerate if it’s their own team doing it.

  10. Fascist-oriented regimes in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Honduras, Paraguay, Guatemala, and Chile, eager to displace indigenous peoples, have invited the Israelis back to their nations to provide advice on depopulating indigenous regions as systematically as Israel has done to the Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. 11. Thanks–I think–Cait. This is exactly why I find it impossible to see a politician without wanting to smash them in the face. I will never forgive the Blairites, the Tories, the Lib Dems and the Ulster Unionists for what they have done. “Think of a human boot stamping on a politician’s face–forever.”

  12. Hi Caitlin…

    I’m a New Dawn subscriber.

How is it, that your work can appear in New Dawn, and at the same time, appear.in that trashy and vile website for dog whistling misanthropes, zerohedge?

    1. Thank you for your highly biased, slanderous and opiniated reply. It is very appreciated.

    2. If Caitlin’s articles hadn’t been on Zero Hedge, I would have never discovered her. Lots of misanthropes and also lots of good people on ZH, kinda like life.

      1. Well, off-topic — I’m not a ZH-reader, am an avid CJ-follower, but would consider myself a misanthrope if only for the sole reason that humans are a blight on this planet for the despicable way animals have been commodified and (mis)treated for millenia.

    3. Why appear in a hated forum? Because Caitlin’s (or anyone’s) message needs to appear before the eyes of people who initially disagree. It is next-to-useless to only and ever preach to the converted. That would just be an echo chamber, whose numbers will only dwindle with time.
      .
If you want to see change in the world, you must take every opportunity to speak to the enemy… if misanthropes are indeed the enemy. Because maybe they aren’t, and you only find that out when you try.

      1. Part of the corporate propaganda aimed at left-leaners is that a person must only talk to people who already agree with them, and it is a mortal sin worthy of excommunication with all true, pure leftists to ever appear in any non-certified, pure-lefty forum. That way, lefties are kept in their box and will never be able to mount any sort of mass effort against their corporate masters.

        1. i Hear what you’re saying. As much as I resent the left-right binary/spectrum, I can appreciate that social issues matter regardless of the larger united machinations.
          .
In that framing, I agree with you that it’s incredibly unwise for leftists to demonize their own for speaking to disagreers. That is, _if_ they actually want their social policies to guide the people.

      2. Peter Harris demonstrates the inherent stupidity of “the left”. It inevitably turns into a circular firing squad intent on enforcing an ever more stupid adherence to an orthodoxy it is chasing up it’s own fundament.

Democracy can work, but only if representatives represent instead of shepherding the sheep up the loading race.

That is our task, to make sure those we elect represent us without fear or favour.

That task requires a hell of a lot more altruism and open-mindedness than most left leaning progressives are capable of, I suspect.

        1. “an ever more stupid adherence to an orthodoxy”
Oh, please. I see your code-words opposing basic human respect and equality of opportunity. If you enjoy the social differences of Left-Right BS, the Right is simply too happy to shit on everyone who doesn’t fit a very narrow parameter of what they consider “traditional normal”.
          .
If the Right could just get over themselves and let others pursue whatever their happiness-that-doesn’t-harm-others is, we could finally unite and deal with the real business of decrying the killing foreigners for daring to remain sovereign.

        2. What I have demonstrated, is that I was right.
Your incoherent and emotional response bears that out.

The right are always complaining about everyone and everything else in the world, but provide no answers at all, in regards to improving the consciousness of human race.

      3. Ok… I see.

Just curious, as to why Caitlin hasn’t responded to my question.

        1. I did not mean to answer for Caitlin, nor would I presume to. I had interpreted you as posing the question to me.
          .
Regardless, I’m not sure that she comes into the comments. I don’t very often either.

  15. Is the ” United Kingdom ” headed for a break up? Is Europe headed for economic problems? Are Ukraine and Russia headed for war or are they going to re-unite and throw a wrench into the CIA coup? Is Donald Trump going to go to war with Iran the next time he is told to? Is humanity going to ever get its act together?

    1. Yes. Yes. No. Yes. No/maybe. Hell NO.

  16. WAKE UP…The votes were not even counted…Its a sham just like in America…AGAIN..The Votes were not counted…the UK people are slaves as much as rest of human race

    1. Exactly, Chris – in the U.S., it’s ES&S. In the U.K. it’s Idox. And in Australia it’s iVote. Each of these shady corporations easily duping the people into thinking that black box electronics built by right wing establishment insiders are somehow counting their votes. Yeah let’s rage against the machine by voting on machines made by and managed by the machine. Makes TOTAL sense.

Paper ballots are not foolproof if they’re being SCANNED in on right wing billionaire owned equipment. Only the revolutionary tech of blockchain is a foolproof way because all votes are tied to the voters’ private keys, transmitted simultaneously to thousands of servers and watchable in real time by the entire world.

      1. This appears to be disinformation. The paper ballots in a UK election are not ‘scanned’ by anything other than human eyeballs.
        ———
Propaganda and disinformation can come from many directions. Always Question Everything! The strange thing is that in this Internet age, while disinformation and propaganda have become more widespread, it is also rather easy to find out the truth.
        https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/sites/default/files/pdf_file/UKPGE-easy-guide-to-the-count-FINAL-FILE-DL-Leaflet.pdf

  17. It would be easy to dismiss the whole UK election disaster with “you’ve got what you voted for, now live with it,” But it would be a bit unfair, because of the unrelenting and vicious smearing of Jeremy Corbyn in the media and the way he was stabbed in the chest by his own party-members, predominantly by the laughing cow who is after his job.

Like hypnotized lemmings former labour voters went to the polls with the perpetual tune “Get Brexit Done” ,ringing in their ears and voted against themselves. When they finally wake-up to the grim reality of their choice, it will be too late for regrets. Sad, but true.

  18. The good news is that the Funeral Parade you are hearing is for the United Kingdom. Ireland will now be united, and Scotland will depart to rejoin the EU. Even Wales is starting to rumble about how if the others can escape the UK, then why can’t they? Who knows, maybe then a smaller England won’t be able to afford its nuclear blackmail weapons and won’t be able to go bomb other freedom loving people.

    1. Scotland will certainly be able to charge England an arm and a leg to rent their nuclear bases, dockyards and anchorages.

  19. Katherine Ryan is a comedian and game show panelist not a journalist or a presenter, so God knows why she felt she had to cover for Phillips. Phillips wanted Labour under Corbyn to lose ,everyone knows that.

  20. For the Labour-For-The-Few faction, as exemplified by The Guardian, it was quite obvious that their number one goal in this election was the defeat of Corbyn. Early on, they showed they’d be happy if Boris lost, but mainly to the non-Liberal-Dems. They talked of Jo Swinson becoming PM, before that became an obvious open joke. They seemed to want a coalition dominated by the Lib-Dems, and if they couldn’t foist Swansong onto the people, then at least have her as the dominatrix in government keeping Jeremy in line.

When this became obviously infeasible, they went for their plan b which was sacrificing the British people to the very unkind, non-mercies of BoJoke and JR Mugg if that was what was needed to make dang sure that Corbyn was banished from power and the Many remained as slaves in their virtual chains.

Democracy can not exist without a free media willing to present all viewpoints. When one side is constantly smeared while the other is uncalled on countless lies, then the result is far, far from democracy. They certainly shouldn’t be bombing free people to spread it.

  21. She’s horrible, I thoroughly dislike and distrust her – she takes us all for fools!

    1. That describes all politicians quite nicely.

      1. So you’re saying don’t vote Labour, they’re just the same as the Tories? Are you a Tory by any chance?

  22. Cringey. Sad. Such “personality”.
In Canada our world news on the radio almost totally ignored the Corbyn leadership and this election campaign in the UK, things which a few decades ago would have been covered almost as fully as Royal nonsense. In this case, even minimal coverage would have been bizarre and telling, for without the saturation/repetition of actually being in the UK for the full Monty messaging, minimal coverage would have been a series of newly launched smear campaign themes and little else.

  23. Ms Johnstone is way to kind in her article to these media scam artists. Here is another view-point of it:
The media’s job is to serve as the propaganda arm of big business. Even if the Sun makes an economic loss, it has succeeded if it gets the business candidate elected, the candidate who will keep corporation tax, capital gains tax and all the other taxes that affect corporate profits as low as possible without stoking a popular insurrection. Read this article here:

  24. http://inthesetimes.com/article/44/kurt_vonnegut_vs_the

Read the interview with Kurt Vonnegut I linked above. 10+ years ago my American friends were still able to laugh with and appreciate Kurt Vonnegut’s wit and powers of observation. Even a few years ago they laughed. But now they get annoyed:

KV (this is from 2003 mind you):

“I myself feel that our country, for whose Constitution I fought in a just war, might as well have been invaded by Martians and body snatchers. Sometimes I wish it had been. What has happened, though, is that it has been taken over by means of the sleaziest, low-comedy, Keystone Cops-style coup d’etat imaginable. And those now in charge of the federal government are upper-crust C-students who know no history or geography, plus not-so-closeted white supremacists, aka “Christians,” and plus, most frighteningly, psychopathic personalities, or “PPs.”

To say somebody is a PP is to make a perfectly respectable medical diagnosis, like saying he or she has appendicitis or athlete’s foot. The classic medical text on PPs is The Mask of Sanity by Dr. Hervey Cleckley. Read it! PPs are presentable, they know full well the suffering their actions may cause others, but they do not care. They cannot care because they are nuts. They have a screw loose!

And what syndrome better describes so many executives at Enron and WorldCom and on and on, who have enriched themselves while ruining their employees and investors and country, and who still feel as pure as the driven snow, no matter what anybody may say to or about them? And so many of these heartless PPs now hold big jobs in our federal government, as though they were leaders instead of sick.

What has allowed so many PPs to rise so high in corporations, and now in government, is that they are so decisive. Unlike normal people, they are never filled with doubts, for the simple reason that they cannot care what happens next. Simply can’t. Do this! Do that! Mobilize the reserves! Privatize the public schools! Attack Iraq! Cut health care! Tap everybody’s telephone! Cut taxes on the rich! Build a trillion-dollar missile shield! Fuck habeas corpus and the Sierra Club and In These Times, and kiss my ass!”

    etc.
    —–

Sorry for the lengthy reply but KV so perfectly describes where the US (and UK) are today and where the AngloZionist Empire is pushing the rest of the world.

    1. I’m a great admirer of Kurt Vonnegut, The Children’s Crusade was instrumental in forming my young mind. I will call him out though. The so called leadership during WW II was just as sociopathic as what we have now. WW II was just WWI part 2, and there were zero just players involved. The only difference is that most of the Sociopaths In Charge now have nuclear weapons instead of just one, which one by the way used them. And to you Christian, Lincoln actually did suspend Habeas Corpus. There is no such thing as good government, never has been, never will be. No matter what you start out with, government is the ideal environment for sociopaths, and will soon be saturated with them. The power to force others to yield to their desire, at gunpoint, is irresistible to them

      1. In America, for awhile, the ‘government’ was where the people could come together and organize to accomplish the common good. Which of course is why for the last 50 years or so we’ve been bombarded by a bazillion corporate messages about how ‘government is bad’. Because organizing for the common good is the opposite of maximizing corporate profits.
        —-
So, what is your suggestion for how people can come together and make joint decisions about what is best for all … if government is out as an idea? One thing we know that does not work is mass individualism. That’s exactly the heart of the philosophy that’s got the world into its current dire predicament.

        1. At present, and maybe for a while in some places, there is enough political space to form communities of common good, if anyone wants to. So far, however, not many people are interested. So they wind up tolerating their psychpathic leadership instead.

  25. How does Jess Phillips not stand with the same class of people as Jack-the-Ripper?

    1. Who says she does not? Your telly?

      1. Such people definitely kill a lot more than 6 working girls. The body heaps of corporate capitalism are far, far bigger than Jack’s paltry total.

  26. I usually think your takes are great and on-point. This, however, I don’t think is as you describe.
    .
Laughter in the face of absurdity, or laughter at expressions of dark humour in the face of unexpected defeat, are completely normal human responses to extremely bad news. I know you don’t see it this way, but for all the sinister machinations happening in the world right now, much of which you talk about accurately, I don’t see what you see in this particular clip.
    .
I do agree with one sinister aspect you mentioned: The insinuated demand of the media table talking heads who expected Phillips to behave — to put on the “straight face” — that they wanted to easily sell. That’s the telling part, IMO.
    .
Much respect for the work you do.

    1. I tend to agree with you, Moon Raccoon. Regardless of what a hypocrite and everything else she might be, she could have been prompted to laugh by anything at all before the interview started. I don’t think she would have been happy that Labour lost the election regardless of her feelings about Jeremy because she’s sure to always undermine his leadership, in power or out.
      .
The same cannot be said about Kim Beazley, Leader of the Labor opposition, for the November 2001 election, judging by his performance in the film Leaky Boat, about the two refugee boat affairs, the Tampa and the SIEV-4 “Children Overboard” that oh-so-incidentally occurred in August and October (nicely sandwiching 9/11). Couldn’t have been more behind Howard if he’d been a Liberal. It was definitely a bi-partisan effort to join US forces in Iraq, no doubt about it.

  27. “These people aren’t like you and me. They don’t care about truth, and they don’t care about human beings.”

Isn’t it the definition of “decadent”. They are decadent and seem to be proud about it.

These are the days of Noah once again. So the return of Jesus must be near and I pray the Rosary to hasten His Glorious return because I do have seen enough of all the bs…
