Narrative Control Operations Escalate As America Burns

Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter, and mainstream media are falling all over themselves with censorship and spin jobs to get the narrative back under control as mass protests continue to sweep across America.

In 2017, representatives of Facebook, Twitter, and Google were instructed in a US Senate Judiciary Committee hearing that it is their responsibility to “quell information rebellions” and adopt a “mission statement” expressing their commitment to “prevent the fomenting of discord.”

“Civil wars don’t start with gunshots, they start with words,” the representatives were told by cold warrior think tank denizen Clint Watts. “America’s war with itself has already begun. We all must act now on the social media battlefield to quell information rebellions that can quickly lead to violent confrontations and easily transform us into the Divided States of America.”

“Stopping the false information artillery barrage landing on social media users comes only when those outlets distributing bogus stories are silenced—silence the guns and the barrage will end,” Watts added.

Those words rattle around in the memory now as America burns with nationwide protests demanding an end to the police state, and as narrative control operations ramp up with frantic urgency.

The Grayzone reports that it has been blacklisted as a source on Wikipedia following a concerted campaign by a suspicious-looking group of editor accounts, many of whom appear to have ties to the right-wing opposition in Venezuela. Wikipedia, whose co-founder once told the US Senate that the online encyclopedia project “may be helpful to government operations and homeland security”, has added The Grayzone to a very short list of outlets that are never to be used under any circumstances, claiming on apparently no basis whatsoever that it publishes false information.

“In fact, in its more than four years of existence, including its first two years hosted at the website AlterNet (whose use is not forbidden on Wikipedia), The Grayzone has never had to issue a major correction or retract a story,” Grayzone‘s Ben Norton says in its report on the matter. Norton documents how the Wikipedia editors are unable to cite any actual false information in any of the outlet’s publications in their arguments, leaving only their objection that Grayzone doesn’t parrot US government-approved narratives like The New York Times, Bellingcat, and Wikipedia’s other designated “reliable sources”.

Norton also notes how Wikipedia has designated the leak publication outlet WikiLeaks an unreliable source despite its nearly 14-year record of authentic publications. Wikipedia designates WikiLeaks as “generally unreliable,” making the utterly baseless claim that “there are concerns regarding whether the documents are genuine or tampered.”

“The internet encyclopedia has become a deeply undemocratic platform, dominated by Western state-backed actors and corporate public relations flacks, easily manipulated by powerful forces. And it is run by figures who often represent these same elite interests, or align with their regime-change politics,” Norton writes.

Norton’s breakdown of the ways Wikipedia is slanted to consistently favor pro-establishment narratives is comprehensive, and well worth reading in its entirety. This short Mintpress News article by Alan MacLeod on the way this same monopolistic editing dynamic has seen Mintpress, teleSur English, and Venezuela Analysis blacklisted from Wikipedia in the same way is also worth a look.

This all comes out as we learn that Facebook is attaching warning labels to posts from outlets sponsored by governments which have not been absorbed into the US-centralized empire like RT and CGTN, but attaching no such label to outlets funded by imperial governments like BBC and Radio Free Europe. There is not any discernible difference in the degree of bias shown in state media from unabsorbed nations like Russia and China than there is in state media from the US and UK (or oligarchic media from the US and UK for that matter), but Facebook causes its 2.6 billion active users to look at one with suspicion but not the other.

This also comes out at the same time we learn that Twitter has deleted over 170,000 accounts for “spreading geopolitical narratives favorable to the Communist Party of China”.  CNN reports (in an article which also cites the analysis of the scandal-ridden narrative manager Renee DiResta) that the accounts were determined to be “tied to the Chinese government” by “experts” who we learn later in the article are none other than the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), a think tank geared explicitly toward fomenting anti-China sentiment in Australia.

“Former Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr has slammed ASPI for pushing a ‘one-sided, pro-American view of the world’, while the former Australian ambassador to China Geoff Raby added that ASPI is ‘the architect of the China threat theory in Australia’,” journalist Ajit Singh noted on Twitter, adding, “Australian Senator Kim Carr has slammed ASPI for seeking to ‘promote a new cold war with China’ in collaboration with the US. In February, Carr highlighted that ASPI received $450,000 funding from the US State Department in 2019-20.”

This blatant imperialist narrative manipulation operation are the “experts” Twitter consulted in determining which accounts were “tied to the Chinese government” and therefore needed to be silenced. Twitter meanwhile continues to allow known fake accounts like the MEK propaganda operation “Heshmat Alavi” to continue inauthentically posing as real people, even when their propaganda is publicized by the President of the United States, because such accounts toe the imperialist line against empire-targeted governments. This pro-imperialism slant is standard for all Silicon Valley tech giants.

This also comes out at the same time the mass media are warning us that Russia, China and Iran are “employing state media, proxy outlets, and social media accounts to amplify criticism of the United States related to the death of George Floyd and subsequent events.”

“As protesters hit the streets in cities across the country, America’s foreign adversaries have flooded social media with content meant to sow division and discord in the wake of George Floyd’s death, according to a U.S. government intelligence bulletin obtained by ABC News,” we are told by the Disney-owned ABC.

“These actors criticize the United States as hypocritical, corrupt, undemocratic, racist, guilty of human rights abuses and on the verge of collapsing,” the bulletin reads, which to anyone who’s been paying attention is obviously true. This is a news story about people from other countries saying true things about the United States of America.

“This is yet another indicator that Russia is using the combination of overt propaganda and covertly disseminated disinformation to sow discord across our populace, expand the cracks in our society, and undermine the credibility of the U.S. government,” former senior Department of Homeland Security official and current ABC News contributor John Cohen informs us.

Ahh, okay. Cool. Thank you for the information, former senior Department of Homeland Security official and current ABC News contributor John Cohen. Man it sure is a good thing America doesn’t have state media. Think about how bad the disinformation would be.

Social media outlets were told that they need to censor their platforms to “prevent the fomenting of discord,” but obviously they didn’t move quickly enough, because the discord has been well and truly fomented. And now they are in a mad scramble to prevent Americans from hearing what people in foreign nations have to say about that, still apparently laboring under the delusion that this is anything other than homegrown, purebred, cornfed, American-as-apple-pie discord.

The most distinctive feature of the last four years has been expanding consciousness. Expanding consciousness of media corruption, of DNC corruption, of government corruption, of the excessive amount of power wielded by the US presidency and the absurd esteem people used to have for that position, of the abuse of immigrants, of police militarization, of unhealed racial wounds, etc.

This is encouraging, because you can’t fix something you haven’t made conscious. This is true of our own unresolved psychological issues, and it’s true of our unresolved collective issues as well. The first step toward a healthy world is expanded consciousness.

This is why increasing government opacity, internet censorship, and the war on journalism are so dangerous. Corruption and abuse thrive in darkness, and corrupt abusers want to keep that darkness intact. They want to keep things as unconscious as possible.

It’s beginning to look like that cat’s out of the bag, though, and I would be very surprised if they ever manage to get that sucker back in there.

What an exciting time to be alive.

  • For political research, I stopped relying heavily on Wikipedia and Google Search maybe three years ago because of their obvious (even formally acknowledged) “Atlantic Council” bias. They’re still very useful for stuff that has nothing to do with politics (if you don’t mind being relentlessly tracked and profiled, where Google is concerned).

The Grayzone was one of the first outlets to call BS on the electoral fraud allegations that served as the excuse for the Bolivian coup last fall, and just this past week the New York Times finally acknowledged that they were right. So, I guess where the Atlantic-Council agenda is concerned, Wikipedia favors sources that don’t call BS on BS until the BS has served its purpose: Grayzone, bad; Gray Lady, useful.

On YouTube (an Alphabet/Google subsidiary), RT videos are flagged with a warning that “RT is funded in whole or in part by the Russian government,” with a link to … Wikipedia! Videos from France 24, which is funded in whole or in part by the French government, are flagged with a notice that “France 24 is a French public broadcast service” (again, with a link to Wikipedia). Videos from commercial networks like MSNBC, which are funded almost entirely by advertising from Fortune 500 companies, are not flagged with anything at all. This is unfortunate, for viewers who are too stupid to draw the connection between, say, the network’s heavy reliance on for-profit-health-sector advertising and its coverage of healthcare reform, or its heavy reliance on automobile advertising and its coverage of fossil-fuel-related climate change … not to mention its coverage of politicians who are de facto proxies of those industries.

Finally, since I’m from Seattle, I suppose I should say something about CHAZ: another pointless, unfocused Occupy drumming circle? With the exception of two city councilmembers (one of whom Amazon spent over half a million trying to unseat), Amazon owns Seattle’s government outright, like Wall Street owned New York’s.

And since I’m American, I suppose I should say something about widespread Fortune 500 support for Black Lives Matter: a great diversion from how they just screwed the 99% (including a grossly disproportionate percentage of Black Americans) with the CARES Act? Disproportionate police brutality toward African-Americans is no more outrageous now than it was under Obama, but with with record COVID-19-induced unemployment (~50% among African-Americans) met with a barely cosmetic income-maintenance and healthcare response, channeling popular rage into protests against police brutality alone is the lesser evil from the Fortune 500’s point of view. (For an example of how they really feel about Black lives, and worker lives generally, take Amazon General Counsel David Zapolsky’s leaked characterization of fired African-American worker/organizer Chris Smalls as “not smart or articulate.” I think we all know what that’s code for.)

    • blm saying: ‘we’ll take your money, but we’ll still break you down’? i would like that attitude.

  • “The most distinctive feature of the last four years has been expanding consciousness.”

Another distinctive feature is the rapid collapse of civility and human decency. We are all being pulled at from two opposite directions. One direction is our expanding understanding of our dire situation and about the dark forces acting upon us. From the opposite direction are those same forces working to pull us ever deeper down into their abyss. We are like souls caught in quicksand and being pulled down by our ankles by those already lost to the hell pit while at the same time we are frantically grabbing on to a tree limb of evolved and elevated consciousness that seeks to save us from a terrible fate. Will the branch hold up? Will our strength persevere? Or will we grow weary and just disappear into the muck? The odds are even-money on each outcome right now.

“This is why increasing government opacity, internet censorship, and the war on journalism are so dangerous. Corruption and abuse thrive in darkness, and corrupt abusers want to keep that darkness intact.”

“They” gave us the Internet and They “allowed” a form of journalism for a time but now They are damned serious about taking those things away from us uppity feral creatures who dared to use them for our own purposes. Back into the pen, sheep!

“What an exciting time to be alive.”

Yes it is. And it’s increasingly necessary to find more ways to stay that way.

  • War ?
Yes it looks like social media and blogs with fake personas are priming people for it eh CAIT?
Only ego-minds can be manipulated and controlled.

    • This is sooooooooooo overdue. ANYONE with an honest and open mind, regardless of his or her level of American patriotism, who spends some time on the website of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, cannot help but come to doubt the official narrative that’s been fed to us ever since the atrocity took place. FINALLY, it seems, the persistent, professional work of the 3300 architects and engineers in this truth-seeking organization have begun to bear fruit. The obscene Floyd murder was understandably and justifiably explosive. Now try to imagine the upshot of millions of American citizens coming to appreciate the strong likelihood that the mass murder of some 3000 Americans on American soil was an inside-their-own-government job.

      • As one of those engineers, we can only hope.

      • Even after 80 years, the citizens still believe Pearl Harbor was an unprovoked, surprise attack by the Japanese. Wall Street hides very well. Ref. DAY OF DECEIT by John Stinnett.

    • stop panicking.

  • Point of correction Caitlin. The BBC is not funded by any government, imperial or otherwise. It is funded by licence fee payers and has various guarantees of independence.
In fact, it is currently under attack by right wing members of our present right wing government for its ‘left wing bias’ who threaten to hashtag ‘Defund the BBC’ for that reason.
(Defunding would be by stopping the collection of licence-fees – to complex to go into here).
Of course, it is pro-establishment and actually right wing biassed but it’s a thousand times better than most of the privately owned media (including those owned by your fascist compatriot Rupert Murdoch!).
So let’s stick up for the BBC and defend it’s ‘not too bad’ record.

    • Nein mann! bbc has got to go. – cfr labour antisemitism charges, iraq war etc …

  • Ms Johnstone, one of the things that there is too little of is ” honest dialog ” between different human beings. I do not agree with some of the positions that this author has; but I must commend him for his effort at ” discourse “. I dislike ” bad people ” no matter their gender, race, political creed or religion. I like good people that are not phony nor deaf to other opinions. Much more civilized discussion is badly needed. This article, in my humble opinion, is worth reading by everyone.

    • the article sucks. it’s right wing conservative bs.

      • Tried reading that website for awhile. Was not impressed. True too much bias. Right wing is no better or worse than left wing bias. Both looking at thd world as they want it to be instead of how it actually exists.

        • left wing bias is far better imo. btw – nice tag ‘looking at the world as they want it to be instead of how it actually exists’, but a little amateuristic. the ‘centre’, the establishment, has always been right wing.

          • This is a progressive liberal world. You definitely cannot see it when you think bias is good.

            • i didn’t say bias is good. how can you know for sure i’m not a religious nutter?

      • I agree Martin.
(Its almost CAIT’s coming out confession.)

  • Also SouthFront banned from Facebook.
And I see some forums/blogs are prohibiting posting of links.

    Speaking of narrative.

It seems to me that the virus has grown tired and is now being replaced by antifa scaremongering.

  • ‘Expanding consciousness.’ What a grand phrase. When I explained the truth to readers of an article republished on AOL, I received my usual amount of sniping and insults from obvious bigots, One wrote that he saw no need for violence, nor for protests that couldn’t gather peacefully (and far from public view – my words, not his) in some place like a park. He was clearly not interested in seeing or hearing a thing from protesters. So I had to explain to him that the purpose of a protest is to be seen and to force people pay attention to the alleged grievances. He argued against the idea of agents provocateur, clearly neither even having understood nor researched, but just to be obstinate. Other than full out violent revolution, continued and constantly expanding consciousness is the only real weapon against the intended global corporate takeover, the loss of what remaining freedoms we still have and the completion of our slow slide toward full out totalitarianism.

  • I hope the author of this excellent blog as well as its readers reads the following letter. It could hooefully be a useful corrective to the mainstream discourse as well as the academic alarm it is.
    https://uncoverdc.com/2020/06/12/uc-berkeley-history-professors-open-letter-against-blm-police-brutality-and-cultural-orthodoxy/

    • Please read this letter. It shows clearly that the left has been hijacked by extremists who now pose a danger to all society. Discourse has been stifled on the left.

      • The only true “left” is the Socialist Equality Party, a Marxist party of the working class. We have not been hijacked by anybody. You are like many others who seem to think bourgeois liberals are leftists. You are mistaken. The Democratic Party in the United States is, as Caitlin and others have repeatedly said, the place where progressive ideas go to die. They are NOT left in any way, shape, or form.

        • progressives are left just not as left as communists but still left.

        • Carolyn, a word of warning: Don’t try to debate with a wall. 🙂

        • You are exactly right, Carolyn. The problem is that literally billions of dollars are spent by our oligarchs to make absoulutely sure that when voters get their, what, 5 minutes, of true, absolute power in a voting booth in November, they will vote for an R or D – makes no difference which. And by accomplishing that goal, they will remain orligarchs and the possibility that anything will change will be, once again, just as it has for many decades, dashed …………….. until the next election, etc. etc. etc…….. or a nuclear war, which IMO is now a near certainty.

    • Wow! An eye opener for sure. Thank you for this superb exposition.

    • nope – it’s bollocks.

    • I’m having a very real problem with the validity of statements made in this article. There are no outside references/facts to substantiate satements like “”All donations to the official BLM website are immediately redirected to ActBlue Charities, an organization primarily concerned with bankrolling election campaigns for Democrat candidates.””.

Just because a black professor makes this statement and others doesn’t make it true. Just sayin’…..

  • Have never participated in social media. Not because of being antisocial but recognizing early on what it was about. A extremely narcisstic waste of time. Of course these people would get their news off facebook and believe it. Also I am sure most can agree that it causes a fair share if drama smong families and friends. Thus I am not concerned about censoring social media. However I am concerned thst this is a precursor to simply obliterating entire websites thay do not wish seen. China media control forr the entire world.

  • The Grayzone is at the very top in truthtelling when it comes to news and analysis, so, of course, it must be censored and silenced. TPTB fear you might prefer its content to their lies dutifully dispensed by the MSM.

  • Here is hoping that ” the truth ” will eventually be commonplace in all media. Our species needs it, desperately.

  • Sir Thomas More in his masterpiece and classical book “Utopia” wrote this 500 years ago:

“Therefore I must say that, as I hope for mercy, I can have no other notion of all the other governments that I see or know, than that they are a conspiracy of the rich, who, on pretence of managing the public, only pursue their private ends, and devise all the ways and arts they can find out; first, that they may, without danger, preserve all that they have so ill-acquired, and then, that they may engage the poor to toil and labour for them at as low rates as possible, and oppress them as much as they please; and if they can but prevail to get these contrivances established by the show of public authority, which is considered as the representative of the whole people, then they are accounted laws; yet these wicked men, after they have, by a most insatiable covetousness, divided that among themselves with which all the rest might have been well supplied…”

We are witnessing the same pattern developing no matter the epoch but in our days, it is the same but worst because we are in the return of the days of Noah just before the return of Jesus.

    Keeping my Rosary on hand!

    • Until neoliberalism tightened its noose around the entire field of communication, rare blogs like this one remaining scattered exceptions (for now), utopian literature describing various forms of the ideal society based upon justice and compassion, instead of greed and profit, were a popular genre of literature. From the Renaissance and the Enlightenment until the late 19th Century/early 20th, such utopian visions inspired people not only to long for a better, more beautiful world, but to begin to actually picture in their minds what such a world might look like, feel like to live in. Then, in the remainder of the 20th Century and so far in the 21st, dystopian literature overwhelmed and replaced the utopian, reinforcing (however unwittingly) the TINA thinking essential to keeping neoliberalism in place as the only viable socioeconomic system. Again, let me make the point that the polar opposite of neoliberalism, its mortal enemy, is not socialism (in which I believe) but IDEALISM, which utterly rejects money as being even close to the proper measure of all things. Only when we learn to again think big and beautiful ideas, pose concrete, comprehensive alternatives to our current oppressive, ecocidal system–only when we engage in the essential task of fashioning a new worldview in which the ethical dimension and the public interest predominate over competitive egotism and the private interest–will the match be lit for a revolution/evolution to free humanity’s and the rest of nature’s neck from the ever-tightening and now strangulating neoliberal noose. The hope is that the immanent breakdown of mainstream (deep state) narrative control that Caitlin describes, while at first bringing only a cacophony of conflicting voices, will allow us to hammer out and coalesce behind a common set of fundamental rights and values with which neoliberalism can be confronted, refuted, and overthrown. If the Floyd murder was a trigger for so many cities to burn, just imagine the upshot of millions upon millions of formerly working and middle class citizens suddenly deprived of jobs, homes, and futures by the upcoming post-Covid GREATEST DEPRESSION, eclipsing by far the Great Depression our grandparents were barely able to struggle through. As the old BTO song goes, “We ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”

      • Because of this tendancy of the wealthy elites to

“devise all the ways and arts they can find out; first, that they may, without danger, preserve all that they have so ill-acquired”

as Sir Thomas More wrote, we have to question everything mainstream medias tell us.

Haters of America lovers of Russia and china what a one eyed crazy msm propagandist narrative you have.

    • Thanks, CAT. Well worth reading and pondering. So is the tail-end commentary on Trump.

    • in a word ….NO!!!

      • Beware of the Trump obsessed.
CAIT’s perspective is one of Trump- centricism.
Shows us the cats in the bag.

        • Too many people blame the guy at the top. Goes with the job. Obama was the perfect president for the system. Quiet hopeful and uplifting while promoting corruption better than any Chicago politician. No surprise GWBush and Obama are good friends. They are laughing at America for its stupidity.

          • Don’t be a brainwashed nationalist. .Its no better or less ignorant than racism thinking Americans are bad and Russians are good. But I know its the brain washing theme here. Bad Americans good Russians.
People are just people, all human beings, they are all mostly manipulated by the mind controllers( media propaganda ). If they were not running from ego mind they would not be able to be controlled.

  • We pray that the “cat is out of the bag”. That “cat-o-nine tails” needs to be lashed onto the backs of the crime syndicate running the US/Israel/UK/CA/AUS, etc.

  • We are going to need encryption.

  • “What an exciting time to be alive.” To the observers maybe who never did anything because for freedom and in fact benefit greatly from racism, rape, theft and murder. These sort of things are always around and make up just under 25% of all progressives favoring freedom, in the US there are so many garage people it’s almost laughable, and yes that garbage will someday be set on fire, and from that stench new heroes will be born, the same sort of garbage people who we have today to thank for our misery.

  • I just tried thegrayzone.com on my android (via google search). I got to the website, but it was straight up frozen (web page totally unresponsive). Over the last few years I have seen several alt websites get crashed because of stories that the state dept/nsa/etc really really don’t like. A lot of times they just block web access totally too. Plus if you get on one of their ‘let’s see what this dude’s phone is doing’ lists, they can jack with your device signals and functions. Trippy (and more than a little annoying).

  • How many conspiracies sites are out there ! People hanging on every word of it & the frightening thing there armed to the teeth

    • yea right. It is the white guy with an AK47 in his home that is the problem, not the other guy walking the street of CHAZ with an AK47. That is what you will get without police. Petty warlords and gangs marking off their territory fighting for control in the open. That is the true utopia thr left will not acknowledge when there is no law and order.

      • No thats what you get with police state and X blackwater.
        CHAOZ.
The Black umbrella company owner Simone and a gang of paid armed NWO mercenary agendists.
The state Police do not create order and that is not their function, they are not even needed in the event of a civilization .
The NWO Seattle installed armed gang is one to spread racism and the desire to have the police state.
Police “protect & or serve” the State.

  • All roads lead to Russia. At least when you’re trying to avoid talking about the murder of George Floyd.

    • The big thing that bothers me is that there is a lot of injustice in the world every day that is ignored. There are a hundred videos of police brutality ignored every day. However the media decides when to emphasize one incident. They blow the whistle and the crazies come running like a pack of dogs.

      • Maybe I’ll ignore it when the knee is on your neck.

    • What murder it was clearly a production, a false flag.
      Murders happen everyday.

      • Are you sure about that? I mean, if I knelt on your neck for three minutes after I found out you didn’t have a pulse, would you still call it a production?

  • Facebook of late has at least one less user who got tired of being used. That, and oh gee, I forgot my Twitter password… stockholder alert!
