Disney is the subject of controversy in mainstream circles again, not because it is a sprawling monopolistic media megaconglomerate whose giant Mickey head is devouring the world like Galactus, but because parts of its live-action version of Mulan were filmed in Xinjiang province.

Vox reports:

“Some viewers who paid to stream the movie on Disney+ last weekend found something troubling in the credits: Disney thanked eight government bodies in Xinjiang, a western province in China where around 2 million Uighur Muslims have been forced into concentration camps by the Chinese government. It turns out parts of Mulan were filmed in Xinjiang two years ago, well after the world knew about Beijing’s plan to ‘reeducate’ Uighurs with Communist Party doctrine.”

Now it is worth pointing out at this point that there is no reason to accept on faith the claim that two million Uighur Muslims have been forced into concentration camps in Xinjiang. The US-centralized empire is ramping up a propaganda campaign against China to manufacture support for cold war escalations with the goal of preventing the emergence of a true multipolar world, and that empire has an extensive history of lying about these things. There are massive, gaping plot holes in the Xinjiang narrative we’re being fed by the State Department stenographers in the mass media, and its key points of evidence always trace back to extremely dubious sources like the odious fanatic Adrian Zenz.

None of this proves the Uighur population isn’t being persecuted to some extent in Xinjiang; propaganda campaigns are typically wrapped around some sort of hard factual center and it’s entirely possible that there’s some degree of truth to them. We just have no reason to believe unproven claims by known liars at this time; there’s no proof of their claims that rises to the level required in a post-Iraq invasion world. Doesn’t mean you should believe the Chinese government are a bunch of girl scouts, it just means you don’t accept claims about them as true and verified when they are not.

But the point I’m actually interested in making today is that even if we were to pretend the establishment claims about what’s happening in Xinjiang have been completely authenticated by independently verifiable proof, it still wouldn’t be as bad as what the US is doing on the same front.

China’s official reason for having had what it calls voluntary “vocational training” camps is to fight extremism to counteract the large number of terrorist attacks that have been happening in Xinjiang, which even if involuntary would be similar to what has been tried by US allies like Saudi Arabia and France. It doesn’t matter if you believe China’s official argument; that’s irrelevant to the comparison I’m about to make because America’s official argument for its “war on terror” is bogus anyway.

So that’s what China claims it’s doing to combat terrorism, and, even if we fully accept the CIA/CNN narrative on the matter as being 100 percent true, the consequences of that effort are that millions of Uighurs are currently imprisoned in cruel concentration camps.

Meanwhile, what does the US claim it is doing to fight terrorism? Launching full-scale ground invasions, toppling regimes, nonstop bombing campaigns, genocidal proxy wars, and illegal occupations.

Researcher Nicolas J S Davies put together a three-part investigation for Consortium News in 2018 to find out how many people had been killed in America’s post-9/11 wars. Part one covers Iraq, part two covers Afghanistan and Pakistan, and part three covers Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia. At the end of the series, Davies writes the following:

“Altogether, in the three parts of this report, I have estimated that America’s post-9/11 wars have killed about 6 million people.  Maybe the true number is only 5 million. Or maybe it is 7 million. But I am quite certain that it is several millions.”

Several millions. Not detained. Not involuntarily subjected to re-education programs. Killed. Five to seven million lives snuffed out, in the name of fighting “terrorism”.

That’s just people who were killed. It says nothing of the tens of millions of people America’s so-called “war on terror” who were forced to flee their homes in desperation. It says nothing of the mass-scale chaos, suffering and trauma that America’s response to acts of terrorism have inflicted upon people which will affect them for the rest of their lives.

This is plainly worse than even the very worst things the US is accusing China of doing.

I do not bring this up with the intention of committing the unforgivable sin of “whataboutism“, but to point out that the governments, politicians, pundits and reporters who are rending their garments about human rights violations in Xinjiang do not actually care about human rights. If they did they would be putting more effort into attacking the depravity of their own government’s escalating “war on terror” than they are into unsubstantiated and far less egregious allegations against a nation that their government has targeted for balkanization.

I point this out because all the most prominent voices condemning China for human rights abuses in Xinjiang are not trying to help the Uighurs, they are trying to retain status and esteem in the globe-sprawling empire whose existence depends on continually destroying, undermining and absorbing any power which stands against them. Xinjiang is a geostrategically crucial region on the world stage for the role it’s to play in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and both China and the US-centralized empire want it working in their own interests. Only difference is it is actually a Chinese territory.

Ignore the fake garment-rending of people who criticize other governments more than they criticize the far worse behaviors of their own. Stay focused on facts and evidence, be ever mindful of agendas, and remain always unapologetically skeptical of the narratives of power.

  1. War on journalism indeed ! Considering the term originally meant a day worker who would sing or declaim for his supper in medieval England . A war that has simmered for centuries ? Trump a journalist of a different sort likes to play down in the dirt as well , avoiding what used to be thought of as the moral high ground ?

    1. Why are all of those Whiggers in China?

  2. Ms Johnstone, you constantly write that Donald Trump is his own worst enemy. It is stunning that President Trump shot himself in both feet by having an interview with Bob Woodward and telling the truth about himself, China, and the Covid-19 virus. It is just unbelievable!
    ~
United States President Donald Trump stands accused of “lying to the American people” over the coronavirus pandemic causing tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths. That is because the president admits himself that he knew how deadly the viral disease was but instead deliberately “played it down”.
    ~
Furthermore, what the admission also reveals is that the months-long campaign by the Donald Trump administration to blame China for the pandemic has been a cynical pile of lies. Lies which amount to reckless aggression risking a war with China.
    ~
The bombshell revelations this week come out of interviews conducted with Donald Trump by veteran journalist Bob Woodward. Excerpts of those taped interviews have been widely published as news reports this week ahead of a new book by Woodward.
    ~
Most damning is Donald Trumps admission to Mr. Woodward on February 7 that he knew the new coronavirus and its Covid-19 disease to be “deadly” and more fatal than “your strenuous flu”. There is no doubt that Donald Trump was being briefed at that early stage by his intelligence officials that a pandemic was coming and that it would lead to phenomenal death toll.

  3. Ms Johnstone, it seems that the United States ” deep state ” is raging a ” color revolution ” right here inside the USA.
Antifa has become a pseudo-fascist tool in the Color Revolution underway, as part of a coup against the executive branch’s administration, and the massive geopolitical and economic shift that administration represents. The methods of the 2016 election would see Trump win by an even wider Electoral College margin in 2020. For these reasons, it was necessary for the deep state to introduce a whole array of ‘extraordinary circumstances and new rules’: staged riots and ballot harvesting in order to change the election outcome.
    ~
The threat of Antifa will always exist so long as the U.S. continues to produce a new-left radicalized permanent under-class, as seen now.
    ~
The three ways to stop Antifa are to A.) Remove its funding sources and de facto leaders; B.) Create a production-driven economy; C.) Defund humanities departments promoting critical race and gender theories; and D.) Rehabilitate its hardened members.

  5. “Whataboutism” is simply a tool of ‘interventionists” of all political ilks , in their lust for power over others , although the packaging may vary.

  6. To claim that the existence of the US empire “depends on continually destroying, undermining and absorbing any power which stands against them” is a misconception. It’s also a common liberal worldview, but unfortunately it explains nothing because the US empire, like others before it, has existed without such a dependence, particularly the notion of ‘continually destroying’ subject/target countries that don’t toe its line. What really defines the US empire’s actions abroad is anticommunism.
    .
Firstly, when the diplomatic and international trade efforts of the US’s present so-called ‘adversaries’ are properly examined, these ‘adversaries’ in fact have all bent over backwards to appease the US — for decades. China, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos and North Korea (despite the latter’s verbal bellicosity) — the remaining post-capitalist workers states — have never stood up against the US in any substantive way at all. Of course North Korea and Vietnam defeated the US militarily because the latter attempted to invade those countries, as any country would. But by and large, the US’s ‘adversaries’ have been too ready to appease the international lout. It’s thus not for nothing the US has had to invent wild and ludicrous stories of the malfeasance of its ‘adversaries’ (eg, China and the Uighur ‘concentration’ camp fairytale; Russiagate, etc), because none of these countries has really done very much ‘standing against’ the US.
    .
Second, look at all the coups, attempted coups and electoral interferences over the decades materially supported and/or perpetrated by the CIA (‘Capitalism’s Invisible Army’) — from Greece to Italy to Iran to Guatemala to Indonesia to Chile, etc, etc. The common underlying thread was never the failure of these countries to ‘obey’ the diktats of the US ruling class. Rather it is and always has been the ‘threat’ of ‘communism’, particularly the ‘threat’ of left-leaning governments going ‘communist’.
    .
Third, it should be noted that Operation Condor, for example, was unleashed across South America throughout 1970s and 1980s, mainly by the military and secret and not so secret police forces of Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay with coordination and material/military support by the US/CIA, to forestall any South American country even having a left-leaning or liberal government in the first place. And how was this conducted? Not by overthrowing or trying to ‘destroy’ disobedient governments or whole countries, but by very ‘obedient’ governments exterminating leftist political opposition within their own citizenries — to prevent any mass support ever emerging for any left-leaning political force. In Guatemala alone, Operation Condor reportedly exterminated 200,000.
    .
Venezuela and Nicaragua, capitalist countries but with left-leaning governments, are currently in US imperialism’s crosshairs and are touted as ‘national security threats’, even though these governments have never threatened to expropriate their bourgeoisies or abolish capitalism. However, their real ‘threat’ is by example to other Latin American nations, of the possibility of simply improving the lives and living standards of ordinary people to an extent that cannot be permitted in countries prey to imperialist super-exploitation. And increasingly this threat by example might also be seen as capturing the political imagination of the long suffering US population itself (heaven forbid).
    .
From this perspective, and from the tide of history that the Canute-like US imperialists are expending so much effort to turn back, it’s much easier to understand that the deadly and rather fanatical efforts of US imperialism are not just to make ‘disobedient’ countries obey them (or be ‘absorbed’ by them). It’s not this liberal notion of countries ‘disobeying’ the ‘authority’ of imperium at all, but how they’re perceived (by the imperium) as going about charting their own destiny.
    .
Nor is it so nutty or for nothing that Obama asserted that the US is the one ‘indispensable’ nation. This is very much about preserving capitalism. The US ruling class sees itself as ‘indispensable’ for the preservation of the capitalist order worldwide, and has expended considerable efforts to this end since at least the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. This is never to deny that the US imperialists, like all imperialist powers, are always on the lookout to protect their own investments in this or that subject country, which is a given. But in line with their Calvinist forebears and from their position of a rapidly disintegrating post-WWII hegemony, the US rulers dangerously believe ever more fervently in their ‘predestination’, that they’re ‘on a mission from God’ to make the world safe for capitalism.

    1. Mr. Morrell,

Look at the American empire’s most recent nation destroying adventure. In 2011, the USA joined with France and the UK to destroy Africa’s most prosperous nation. The USA had no business interests in Libya and communism was not a threat. Please explain this crime?

      1. Correct me if my memory is off, but Libya had the highest standard of living in Africa, with healthcare, free education, money for new families etc, and was leading efforts to create a pan african dollar based on a gold standard to avoid dependency on the us dollar, swift, etc. Sure they didnt call themselves communist, but the “crime” isnt just that word, its the example of a country in the global south refusing the neocolonial orthodoxy and organizing other countries outside of the hammer of us /nato militarism, and the “carrot” of imf debt. They got the hammer for refusing the carrot.

      2. You’re right, and you can add Syria and Yemen to that list. The US imperialists are still figuring out ways to destroy Iran, and for decades have been building up their main forces to really and truly destroy China and Russia by nuclear means (and only await the inconvenience of MAD to evaporate).
        .
However, complete nation destruction is the last option the imperialists resort to, and applies to countries that either:
        1. Have no significant US capital invested in them or have locked US capital completely out and have strategic military/resource importance (eg, Syria, Iran);
        2. Have attempted to set up alternate means of international financial arrangements that can quickly collapse the US dollar exchange rate and raise the prospect of the US actually having to pay back its international debts (eg, Libya);
        3. Have overthrown capitalism (China, Vietnam, Cuba, North Korea, Laos).
        4. Have made ‘socialist’ noises about their own destiny (eg, Venezuela, Nicaragua).
        .
Country destruction is the exception to the rule, the rule being to keep subjugated nations weak and therefore (super) exploitable and to weaken or destroy the economic ability of imperialist rivals to compete or ‘steal’ the subjugated into their own orbits. Not destroy the countries themselves, which only makes them far more expensive to subjugate and exploit. That’s why a ‘native’, ‘comprador bourgeoisie’ is so useful.
        .
All imperialists behave along these lines, not just US imperialism. It’s only when the ‘routine’ approaches fail (eg, debt peonage, economic pressure/warfare, trade deals, ‘aid’, etc) that the imperialists resort to replacing the country’s government. And in the US example when their coups have failed (mainly because they don’t have an effective fifth column in the target country’s military and secret police trained at Fort Benning and Langley), then they’re forced to use more direct means.
        .
With their military incursions and occupations, and as so well illustrated with Iraq, the US imperialists have also destroyed the state machines of the target countries. The English colonialists only went that far when they were prepared to set up a competent state machine of their own to replace the one they’ve destroyed. In contrast, the US imperialists have proven totally incapable of that, but without a state machine the target nation becomes a ‘failed state’, and essentially is destroyed.
        .
When they invaded Iraq the US imperialists really were deluded enough to think the Iraqi population would support them and miraculously establish ‘democracy’ and a completely new state machine to run the country along lines more acceptable to US interests. Iraq became a failed state through US incompetence and negligence. In Libya the US imperialists had learnt the lesson and were happy to destroy Libya intentionally, largely out of pure malice but also to prevent the population taking matters into its own hands, which is always a danger.
        .
But none of this detracts from the fact that US foreign policy overwhelmingly remains one of anticommunism and the perpetual struggle to maintain the reign of capital worldwide. Whenever a country’s population shows any signs of wanting to be rid of capitalism, no matter how mild, and no matter how obedient that country’s government is to US diktats, US imperialism (whose pointy end is the CIA) will do all that’s necessary to prevent it. And as has been proven repeatedly, they haven’t needed to destroy the country itself. Just the ‘insurgency’, the leftists, the ‘communists’, the trade union leaders, and so on. And in the vast majority of cases, the capitalist governments and state machines of these comprador bourgeoisies have happily complied and accepted such US ‘aid’.

  7. Such is the nature of all governments. The one and only thing any of them have ever proven to be exceptionally good at is killing people. Socialist governments, whether of the communist or fascist variety, seem to be exceptionally expert at ending people’s lives. We are on the fast track to eliminate all other forms of government except these two. The US has up to this point been the most murderous because it has the resources to be so. This will soon pass. The trouble being that when such resources decline, the Psychopaths In Charge tend to do even more evil while trying to maintain there former wealth and power. Such as running rough shod over their own people. A thing currently quite evident in your own country Caitlin, where a woman was recently jailed for a facebook post. True, no death resulted, but the night is young.

    1. There has never been a socialist government in human history, although some oligarchic regimes have falsely called themselves such. It would be nice to see a country actually engage in the socialist experiment of the citizens owning and operating the means of production and distribution through the democratic process.

      1. Alas, such would indeed be as near utopia as one could hope for, if it weren’t for that pesky human nature. Gang rape is democracy in action, and while not the only result, will be one of them. Which is the reason that any and all attempts to institute socialism end badly. It can be successfully implemented in small groups or small political units, but then so can free markets. In fact, I would propose that the sheer size of modern nations is the largest detriment to a just an equitable social arrangement. The tribe, or even the individual city, can either be just and equitable, or the citizens of such will simply leave in search of one that is.

Pretty soon we will have all the evidence needed.

Deepfake technology is improving all the time. Soon video produced by Deepfake will be indistinguishable from reality. Then whatever needs to be proven can be proven at the touch of a button (who needs buttons when you have voice activation? who needs voice activation when AI already knows what you want and has already produced it?) History will be toast, yesterday will be toast, tomorrow is already prepared for streaming to you.

  11. 9/11 plus 19 years

I remember being in my car and listening to talk radio years ago. An earnest woman called in to discuss the fifth anniversary of 9/11. She said that five years ago she had called into the station and said, “in five years we won’t even recognize this country”. The radio host agreed that she had been right. What irony. The two probably had no conception of how much further the country would go in becoming unrecognizable.
And here we stand today on the precipice of a November election that is going to be a total cluster-fork and can we possibly imagine how the country will look after that dust settles?

The last thing I dreamt last night was of people shooting at each other. I was driving against the flow of bumper–to-bumper traffic. The traffic was so bogged down that people became impatient and started using my lane. Then people started opening fire on each other from their cars. It seemed like people were firing at random targets.
I didn’t have a weapon other than the vehicle I was driving. Further down the road I saw people out of their cars lined up shoulder to shoulder. They were lined up parallel to the stalled traffic all shooting in a direction away from the road. Between them and the road was one yahoo shooting at them. They had their backs to him and their own gun fire made it impossible for them to be aware of the firing from the yahoo. It appeared that other drivers had tried in vain to take out the yahoo by ramming him with their cars. The yahoo has standing in an area of mud and the cars had all gotten stuck in the mud as they tried to ram him. I called out to the people standing shoulder to shoulder to warn them about the yahoo but they couldn’t hear me over the sound of their own gun fire. So it was decision time, I was calculating whether my car would make it through the mud and stop the yahoo that was shooting people in the back. That is when I woke up from the dream.

    How to interpret that dream?

I am a Green Voter. Totally alienated by the corrupt, totalitarian and traitorous DNC. Never had any use for the Jerk Republicans, but I see Trump as a possible tool to smash the DNC leadership and free “the good people” sheepishly loyal to the Democratic Party. But I am having very strong doubts about just how good these “good people” actually are.

I sure saw this country and the people in it very differently on the morning of 9/11/2001 .

  13. Ah, Ms Johnstone, from the very beginning the human species has been devising numerous ways to kill each other for any reason big or small. This is one of our greatest ” dysfunctions ” and probably the reason we will extinguish all life on this planet in the very near future. I laud your efforts to bring to light the evils of the Evil Empire but I do not think that the average United States citizen gives a rat ass about anybody except themselves. The actions of our government throughout this planet are not aired on United States TV screens so ” out of sight out of mind “. The people of these United States suffer no consequences, except inflation, from our governments policies. If the people we are bombing and displacing were able to do the same to us things might change.

    1. Two points, Ron. First, we cannot extinguish all life. We are not that powerful and the life force is incredibly fecund and creative. Second, I agree with you about the people of the U.S. What I’ve wondered about is what people all over the planet think about us and our virus deaths, us and our wildfires, us and our police brutality. Do at least some of them think that we’re getting our just deserts?

  17. In this world of fake news, propaganda and official misinformation by agents in government, religions and even so-called “scientific” institutions, facts and truth remain buried behind smoke and mirror tricks for mind control. A systematic search for facts and truth, sifting through all the evidence, detailed information on relevant topics, logical arguments and analysis might help some readers in deciding whom to believe. But few if any have the time, intellectual capacity, disposition and dedication to accomplish such an enormous, virtually impossible task. So much easier to simply accept official narratives. In this world of smoke and mirrors, money talks louder than facts and truth. However, the Keys of Knowledge constitute an irrefutable statistical procedure for checking and discovering who has been telling the truth and who has been lying and misleading us. These Keys will expose liars, trolls, spies from the authorities and will help expand and empower a network of hopeful, courageous and successful liberators. But these Keys are only for people who admit that their own personal insights, knowledge and perceptions are biased and inadequate for the task.

The Decade of Transformation, Being In Balance With Nature, Kevin Zeese (Kevin just died, RIP)
Biologist Elisabet Sahtouris describes an alternative theory of evolution to Darwin’s “survival of the fittest” in her book, “Earthdance: Living Systems in Evolution.” Sahtouris finds that evolution is cyclical, a spiral instead of linear. She describes how when a new species arises, it upsets the ecological equilibrium as it comes into competition with other species over habitat. The task of that species in the adolescent phase of its evolution is to find its niche in a way that is cooperative with other species. If it fails, it goes extinct.
The human species is in its adolescent phase, and now it is time to recognize our mistakes and change our behaviors. Sahtouris writes:
“Like any adolescent who is suddenly aware of having created a very real life crisis, our species faces a choice — the choice between pursuing our dangerous course to disaster or stopping and trying to find mature solutions to our crises. This choice point is the brink of maturity — the point at which we must decide whether to continue our suicidal course or turn from it to responsible maturity. Are we going to continue our disastrously competitive economics, our ravaging conversion of our natural supply base into things, our pollution of basic soils, waters and atmosphere in the process? Or will we change the way we see life — our worldview, our self-image, our goals, and our behavior — in accord with our new knowledge of living nature in evolution?”

    1. John, how often does “a new species arise, upset the ecological equilibrium as it comes into competition…..” Geological evidence indicates 5 moments in the unknown past when an entire plethora of new species arose after a previous plethora of species became extinct. We have millions of species and we had more millions before our generation destroyed plenty. Has anyone found evidence of any new species arising in recorded history?
