There’s a news story about a US military convoy entering Syria being shared around social media with captions claiming that President Biden is already “invading” Syria which is getting tons of shares in both right-wing and left anti-imperialist circles. The virality of these shares has inspired clickbait titles like “Joe Biden Invades Syria with Convoy of US Troops and Choppers on First Full Day as President“, which are being shared with equal virality.

But if you read the original report everyone jumped on, accurately titled “US military convoy enters northeast Syria: report”, you don’t have to read too far to get to this line: “Other local media report that such maneuvers are not unusual as the US often moves transfers equipment between Iraq and Syria.”

So while this is a movement of troops between illegitimate military occupations which have no business existing in either country, it is nothing new and would have been happening regardless of which candidate had won the last US presidential election.

https://twitter.com/DonaldJTrumpJr/status/1352390312832987136?s=20

Another inaccurate narrative that’s gone completely viral is the claim that Biden is sending more troops to Iraq. This one traces back to a single Twitter post by some Trumpy account with the handle “@amuse” who shared a Jerusalem Post article with the caption “BREAKING: President Biden is considering reversing Trump’s drawdown in Iraq by adding thousands of troops to combat growing terror threats in the region as evidenced by Thursday’s attack near the US embassy.”

If you read the actual JPost article titled “Baghdad bombing could be the Biden admin’s first challenge” you will see that it contains no such claim, and if you were to search a bit you would find @amuse claiming that they were sharing something they’d learned from “sources” in DC instead of accurately summarizing the contents of the article. Unless you know this person and know them to be consistently trustworthy, there is no valid reason to believe claims allegedly said by alleged anonymous sources to some openly partisan anonymous account on Twitter.

But the bogus tweet was amplified by many influential accounts, most notably by Donald Trump Jr with the caption “Getting back into wars on the first full day. The Swamp/War Inc. is thrilled right now.” Its virality then caused it to work its way outward to dupe many well-meaning anti-imperialists (myself included until I looked into it) who are vigilant against Biden’s notorious warmongering, and now there’s a widespread narrative throughout every part of the ideological spectrum that Biden is escalating warmongering in both Syria and Iraq.

It is entirely possible–probable even–that reliable warmonger Joe Biden will end up sending more US troops to Iraq and Syria at some point during his administration. But if the antiwar community keeps staring at the movement of ground troops with hypervigilant intensity, they won’t be paying enough attention to the areas where the more deadly aspects of Biden’s hawkishness are likely to manifest.

Trump’s base has been forcefully pushing the narrative that the previous president didn’t start any new wars, which while technically true ignores his murderous actions like vetoing the bill to save Yemen from US-backed genocide and actively blocking aid to its people, murdering untold tens of thousands of Venezuelans with starvation sanctions, rolling out many world-threatening cold war escalations against Russia, engaging in insane brinkmanship with Iran, greatly increasing the number of bombs dropped per day from the previous administration, killing record numbers of civilians, and reducing military accountability for those airstrikes. Trump may not have started any “new wars”, but he kept the old ones going and inflamed some of them. Just because you don’t start any new wars doesn’t mean you’re not a warmonger.

Rather than a throwback to “new wars” and the old-school ground invasions of the Bush era, the warmongering we’ll be seeing from the Biden administration is more likely to look like this. More starvation sanctions. More proxy conflicts. More cold war. More coups. More special ops. More drone strikes. More slow motion strangulation, less ham-fisted overt warfare.

It is certainly possible that Biden could launch a new full-scale war; the empire is in desperate straits right now, and it could turn out that a very desperate maneuver is needed to maintain global domination. But that isn’t the method that it has favored lately. The US empire much prefers nowadays to pour its resources into less visible acts of violence like economic siege warfare and arming proxy militias; the Iraq invasion left Americans so bitter toward conventional war that any more of it would increase the risk of an actual antiwar movement in the United States, which would be disastrous for the empire. So rather than tempt fate with the bad publicity of flag-draped coffins flying home by the thousands again imperialism is now served up with a bit more subtlety, with the military playing more of a backup role to guard the infrastructure of this new approach.

It appears clear that this would be the Biden administration’s preferred method of warmongering if given the choice based on who’s going to be in it. The incoming Secretary of State Tony Blinken now advocates replacing the old Bush model of full-scale war with “discreet, small-scale sustainable operations, maybe led by special forces, to support local actors”. Biden’s nominee for CIA Director William Burns urged caution in the lead-up to the Iraq invasion and later expressed regret that he didn’t push back against it. Rather than picking bloodthirsty psychopath Michele Flournoy for Defense Secretary as many expected, Biden went with the less cartoonishly evil Raytheon board member Lloyd J. Austin III. All this while depraved coupmonger Victoria Nuland is being added to the administration and the murderous Venezuela coup is folded into its policy.

Too much of the antiwar community is still stuck in the early 2000s. The western war machine just doesn’t generally kill that way anymore, and we need to adjust our perspectives if we want to address the actual murderousness as it is actually showing up. If you keep looking out for obsolete ground invasions, you’re going to miss the new form of warmongering completely.

Trump supporters who claim to oppose war missed this completely throughout the entirety of his presidency, confining the concept of “war” solely to its most blatant iterations in order to feel like their president was a peacemaker instead of a warmonger. One of the few positive developments that could potentially arise from the Biden administration is helping such people to recognize acts of violence like starvation sanctions as war, since they will be opposing Biden and that is how this new administration will be manifesting much of its murderousness.

The political/media class likes to keep everyone focused on the differences between each president and his immediate predecessor, but we can learn a whole lot more by looking at their similarities. Biden’s warmongering is going to look a lot like Trump’s–just directed in some different directions and expressing in slightly different ways–despite all the energy that has been poured into painting them as two wildly different individuals. Once you see beyond the partisan puppet show, you see a single oligarchic empire continuing the same murderous agendas from one sock puppet administration to the next.

  2. The world needs a respite from American-imposed violence and predatory neocolonialism masquerading as “freedom,” “democracy” and supposedly benevolent “free market” capitalism, i.e., “leadership” at the point of a gun and under the duress of economic sieges and sanctions, starvation, and even embargoes on medical care. None of that criminality is “exceptional” in the least. Renunciation and elimination of such wanton, repulsive and wasteful behavior by our federal government might allow this country to begin to address the long abandoned needs of its own citizens. It’s high time for our government to fairly serve its own people, especially in areas such as education, health care, infrastructure, emergency services, social safety nets, equal protections under wise law enforcement and guaranteed voting rights rather than to simply use them as cash cows to support an insanely gargantuan global military garrison.

    Joe Biden does not want to make any of these changes. In fact, he stands diametrically opposed to the slightest change for the better in any of these areas. The people he has already appointed to powerful positions in his administration and the executive orders he has already given demonstrate that he only intends to escalate the international warmongering and increase the repression and surveillance of America’s long suffering population. He claims to revile Trump’s “fascism,” but substitutes his own well-formulated version of the same thing in already thoroughly-crafted legislation that is essentially an extension of the onerous “Patriot Act.” Now the mission is to seek out and detain American “terrorists” in addition to dodgy foreigners.

    One way or another, Joe must go. He’s the worst person for the job that a great many of his citizens don’t really think he actually won fair and square. And I’m not talking just about the qualms of dedicated Trumpers, but of the many registered Dems who know that the DNC again rigged the primaries through back room deals to prevent Sanders or Gabbard from getting a fair shot. How Joe imagines his entry in the history books carrying such baggage seems at odds with reality to me. His enablers leading the House and Senate (Pelosi and Schumer) are also living in a cockeyed and corrupt fantasyland that the American people have never really endorsed because they’re never given legitimate alternatives on the ballot, just the most dogmatic party hacks ad infinitum. The identity politics they and Joe religiously embrace lead not to the unity they proclaim but to ever worsening divisiveness.

  3. Dear Caitlin (with typos fixed),

    Inspired by a photo of a starving Yemeni child, I wrote this poem nearly two years ago. Please let me know if I can send you this haunting photo, as this war doesn’t end until we HUMANIZE it, bringing the full, tragic horror of deliberately starving children to death for the sake of politics home.

    The first time I saw her she was wearing only a dirty pair of pink pants with a torn left leg,
    A fresh bandage with two needles but no tubes in the crook of her right arm.
    Her hair— reddening in front, a telltale sign of iron depletion,
    Pulled back to reveal a prominent, beautifully shaped ear—was tied in a ponytail,
    While her small left hand rested on the edge of a blue bucket—
    Actually a washbasin, of a type used in Third World countries for everything from doing dishes
    To bathing babies—converted into a scale;
    A bucket she was being weighed in.

    Context is everything, the alarming context of jutting ribs
    In a different context becoming the striations of a smooth, beautiful seashell,
    Yet there was nothing aesthetic in the gaunt concavity of her armpits,
    The ravaged-looking bellybutton that spoke of a delivery both hasty and homemade.
    The white and gray tile floor in the background on which stood two other figures—
    A pair of sandaled feet and a bit of colorful skirt that could have belonged to her mother;
    A rubber-gloved hand holding a pen that could have belonged to the doctor weighing her—
    Seemed to echo the antiseptic harshness her life had been reduced to.

    Yet with all these details, it was her face that commanded attention:
    A pert little nose; a small, quiet mouth; a look that can best be described as angelic
    Rising above the indignity she found herself in.
    A face that was strangely serene,
    With a calm acceptance of the harsh realities the U.S.-backed Saudis are inflicting
    In their war on Yemen: eighty-five-thousand children starved to death so far;
    A transcendent face.

    This was months ago, and I have prayed for this little girl ever since.
    Wishing I had saved the photo, I began looking for it
    Only to find it along with a whole bunch of images and news I did not want to see or hear—
    Including other photos of her: The ears, the look on her face, were unmistakable.
    Sadly, they depicted her in an even more reduced state,
    Her deathly gauntness testimony to an irretrievable barrier having been crossed.

    Suddenly I knew everything about her:
    Her name: Amal Hussain;
    Her age: seven (due to her shrunken size, I figured her to be much younger);
    The fact the clinic had sent her home—
    Not because she was cured but because of others whose scared, stricken look
    Told them they were more needy, as opposed to a little angel who had things under control
    In spite of her earthly sufferings—
    And proceeded to do what angels do:
    Return to the heavenly realm where they belong.

  4. The White Helmets and allied jihadists will pull off another chemical weapons false flag in Syria in an attempt to drawn in US troops/missiles. In Ukraine the fascists will escalate their attacks on the Donbass attempting to bring NATO/US into direct conflict with Russia. For the last four years the Deep State has attempted many provocations with’ Russia using false stories such as the bounties lies. Even if Biden wants to avoid major confrontations and outright war, there are plenty of forces who work will just hard to starting a war.

  7. Some people are saying a lot about the chaos in these United States!
    This fine article can be read here:
    Storming Into America 3.0 by Donald Jeffries!

  8. Too right. Far from proving Biden is more war-like than Trump because he’s invaded Syria on day one of his reign, it simply shows we should expect more of the same. The empire has a new front man, that’s all.

    1. That’s even assuming this supposed invasion did occur during Biden’s presidency. The original SANA article, ‘International coalition sends weapons and logistical materials to its illegitimate bases in Hasaka countryside’ on which all this seems based, is dated January 21, and doesn’t specify exactly when the US convoy entered Hasaka.
      “Local sources told SANA that a convoy consisted of 40 trucks loaded with weapons and logistical materials, affiliated to the so-called international coalition have entered in Hasaka countryside via al-Walid illegitimate border crossing with north of Iraq, to reinforce illegitimate bases in the area.
      Over the past few days, helicopters affiliated to the so-called international coalition have transported logistical equipment and heavy military vehicles to Koniko oil field in northeastern Deir Ezzor countryside, after turning it into military base to reinforce its presence and loot the Syrian resources.”

    2. Sending more troops into Syria risks confronting Turkish troops there. But that may be the plan since in 2019 President Biden said that regime change in Turkey would be a priority.

  9. Caitlin at her best here, cutting through propaganda both left and right and focusing our eyes on where the real action is likely to occur. “One of the few positive developments that could potentially arise from the Biden administration is helping such people (antiwar Trump supporters) to recognize acts of violence like starvation sanctions as war, since they will be opposing Biden and that is how this new administration will be manifesting much of its murderousness.” My “hope,” put in quotes because it contains its own ample share of suffering, this time for Americans like me, is that the socioeconomic tsunami, caused by the pandemic and about to wash through the exceptional nation shore to shore, will simply be too massive, too powerful, too all-encompassing, too desperately in need of full governmental attention, that there won’t be enough time, energy, and resources to do much more damage internationally than Caitlin suggests, perhaps even less. Who knows, Biden might even decide–be forced to decide–to lift some of those sanctions and other murderous “acts of violence” which only a strong and prosperous nation, a unipolar superpower, can afford to implement.

    1. ‘My “hope,” … is that the socioeconomic tsunami … will simply be too massive, too powerful, too all-encompassing, too desperately in need of full governmental attention, that there won’t be enough time, energy, and resources to do much more damage internationally.’
      I often feel the same way, but a wounded animal is often at its most dangerous, liable to lash out unpredictably. Still, I can’t help thinking the USA’s dismal and incompetent response to COVID and other internal problems will hasten China’s rise, which may be a good thing overall.

      1. Let us hope–and let those of us who pray, pray–not only for the rise of China but for the rise of humanity and all living things.

  10. This is what Caitlin should be writing about. This is the real danger to humanity. Instead she writes about distractions. Watch this video if you care about humanity. It is where we are rapidly going

      Drivel. The phrase ‘the new normal’ was around long before COVID or 2020, as a simple Google search would reveal, if the author had any time left for fact-checking after promoting these weird and wonderful narratives.

    3. Hey, the Egyptian empire needed enemies and not much has changed other than a scientific understanding of how the mind works but of course minds were manipulated long before MRIs showed the pre frontal cortex shutting down when the right BS is told to the subject by the right person. In the ancient world, Pharoah and King’s would often decree a jubilee where most debts were forgiven; contrast that to the banksters of today. I forgot who said “none are so enslaved as those who believe they are free” but it sure is true. Edward Bernays in modern times, drawing on his relative S Freud writings started modern propaganda and we’re so much more advanced now. We really don’t have “free will”and never did. A very small minority of non social people and sociopaths recognize this and the sociopaths use it to their advantage. We need a war alright, a war on climate change and inequality; I’m not hopeful.

      1. “We need a war alright, a war on climate change and inequality.”
        Two wars we’re unlikely to get, at least in any serious form.

    https://www.etymonline.com/word/trump
    trump (v.2)
    “fabricate, devise,” 1690s, from trump “deceive, cheat” (1510s), from Middle English trumpen (late 14c.), from Old French tromper “to deceive,” of uncertain origin. Apparently from se tromper de “to mock,” from Old French tromper “to blow a trumpet.” Brachet explains this as “to play the horn, alluding to quacks and mountebanks, who attracted the public by blowing a horn, and then cheated them into buying ….” The Hindley Old French dictionary has baillier la trompe “blow the trumpet” as “act the fool,” and Donkin connects it rather to trombe “waterspout,” on the notion of turning (someone) around. Connection with triumph also has been proposed. Related: Trumped; trumping. Trumped up “false, concocted” first recorded 1728.

    Anyone remember George W Bush reading out the poem of the pet goat?
    Do you recall Trump reading that poem about the vicious snake?
    It was widely reported by the mass media who instructed their audience on how to interpret those words.
    They all said the poem was a reference to immigrants so their audience knew what to think of it.
    Sigh….

  15. Remembering the draft, snatching up 18 year old “men” into armed confrontations on the other side of the planet in the name of liberty and freedom for all. No liberty, no freedom, but a solemn oath forced upon young men chosen by bureaucrats to die for their country. Ahh, those were the good old days. (Salutes flag). Those who run the country never shut down the draft registration system, but some have seriously called for it to be extended to include 18 year old young ladies, just because freedom isn’t free. Watch for it, because that’s what evil does when it owns you.

    1. I never understood how a nation could fight for liberty by enslaving young men, and now maybe women. In a nation that has a Constitutional amendment outlawing involuntary servitude. I was 18 in 1970, and by the grace of God was not picked by the press gang to choose between imprisonment and slavery. A deserving nation will have sufficient people willing to go to war to defend it. An undeserving nation engaged in military action with no resemblance to defense needs the draft to do so. Far too often the damage done to the psyche of young men by forcing them to leave the country to go kill or be killed for someone else’s money is a worse effect than the slavery. Witness suicide being the number one cause of death in the current volunteer military.

    2. My number came up, so to speak, in 1970 and I was inspected, injected, neglected, and rejected, as the old song goes. I’ll never forget the sad look on the sarge’s face when he told me, “son, we can’t take you.” Well, that really broke my freakin’ heart.

      These words are from a Declaration of Conscience signed by hundreds of prominent Americans and published on July 8, 1940, in response to FDR’s draft, the first peacetime draft in our history, “The essential idea underlying military conscription is the major premise of every dictatorship and all totalitarianism. It is the assumption that the individual citizen is but a pawn in the hands of unlimited State power.” This was part of the strong American opposition to involvement in a second European war, which has been so effectively censored out of “the good war” fiction of World War II.

      We have scarcely known a day of peace since those wise words were ignored. Our government continues to invent an endless series of comic-book villains who, they tell us, are fiendishly determined to deny us our right to uncontrollably consume the planet’s resources, unless we continue the insane course of militarization to its logical conclusion, total global domination.

  16. Just a hunch but the US could really use another war right now. They’re in a bit of a lull. Nothing like a good kill-fest to get national pride and the economy humming again. Now maybe the populace doesn’t have the stomach for it but if you could sell it in the right way? Maybe a false flag? Maybe …. just spit-balling but you never know.

  17. Thanks for this report, Caitlin. I fell for the original click bait.

  18. “War profiteers push for more violence and bloodshed because they make money selling the weapons used to perpetrate it.”

    Do you think so? War Profiteers claim they do the exact opposite and make the world safe for democracy.

    What side am I on?

    Knowing that we all have challenges getting a comprehensive view of reality I go for to the facts. Weapons kill and death is death. The eye in the sky only sees the death and sees none of our strange baroque justifications we manufacture for our stupid and cruel actions. Dead people can’t participate in a democracy or vote. Making the world safe for democracy by war is twisted and defeats democracy. Democracy means everyone is represented. War only represents power.

  19. Is it a Trump? Is it a Biden? Maybe a Cheney? Might be the SOB in the mirror!

  20. Ms Johnstone President Joe Biden just might find that ” warmongering planet earth ” is not going to be a ” cakewalk anymore “. Some of the countries that we have been bombing and occupying just might decide that now is the time to begin some ” payback “. The Biden administration can not afford ” new wars ” nor can it afford to ” escalate ongoing wars ” and turn them into World War III. The ” deep state ” put Joe Biden into the Presidency but ” red America ” is going to reject everything this administration attempts to do.

  21. I think it would be fair to say Donald Trump DID start a new war…in the US!

    1. My thoughts exactly!

      1. And now a notable portion of the Democratic party has declared war on roughly half the nation, accusing them of “domestic terrorism”. Just as in most wars, there are no good guys among those that create it, regardless of party. I have no love for Trump, or any US president since I became somewhat politically aware, which started with Nixon. But Trump was no better or worse than any other. They all work for the bank cartel. Fear and division are the primary tools of tyrants, and the party division is just another method of inflicting division. Both sides are suckers. Attacking each other instead of the oligarchy that controls them both.
