US Again Bombs Nations On Other Side Of The World In “Self-Defense”

Listen to a reading of this article:

The US is again illegally bombing nations on the other side of the planet which it has invaded and occupied and branded this murderous aggression as “defensive”.

“At President Biden’s direction, U.S. military forces earlier this evening conducted defensive precision airstrikes against facilities used by Iran-backed militia groups in the Iraq-Syria border region,” reads a statement by Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby. “The targets were selected because these facilities are utilized by Iran-backed militias that are engaged in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks against U.S. personnel and facilities in Iraq. Specifically, the U.S. strikes targeted operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and one location in Iraq, both of which lie close to the border between those countries.”

Even more absurd than the fact that we’re all still pretending this clearly dementia-addled president is “directing” anything is the claim that these actions were “defensive” in nature. It is not possible for occupying invaders to be acting defensively in the nations they are occupying an invading; US troops are only in Iraq by way of an illegal 2003 invasion, a bogus 2014 re-entry, and a refusal to leave at the Iraqi government’s request last year, and they are in Syria illegally and without the permission of the Syrian government. They can therefore only ever be aggressors; they cannot be acting defensively.

It’s like if you broke into your neighbor’s house to rob him, killed him when he tried to stop you, and then claimed self-defense because you consider his home your property. Only in the American exceptionalist alternate universe is this considered normal and acceptable.

The only actual defensive action that the US could legitimately take to protect troops in Iraq and Syria would be to remove US troops from Iraq and Syria.

As former US representative Justin Amash pointed out following the bombing, there is no actual legal authorization for US troops to be in Iraq or Syria in the first place. As journalist Glenn Greenwald highlighted, there is also no legal basis for bombings on the military personnel in those nations either, no matter how “Iranian-backed” they are.

“I know it’s boring to note this but Biden has no legal authorization to bomb ‘Iranian-backed’ targets in Syria and Iraq, making it illegal,” Greenwald tweeted, adding, “But Obama bombed Libya after the House voted against doing so, and few of the Sacred Rule Of Law mavens cared.”

The legal justification the Biden administration is using for this airstrike is the same bogus one it used for its airstrikes in Syria this past February: not counter-terrorism, but an extremely weird and broad interpretation of Article II of the US Constitution.

“As a matter of international law, the United States acted pursuant to its right of self-defense,” Kirby writes in the aforementioned statement. “The strikes were both necessary to address the threat and appropriately limited in scope. As a matter of domestic law, the President took this action pursuant to his Article II authority to protect U.S. personnel in Iraq.”

This claim the Executive Branch has been leaning on lately, that Article II permits unilateral acts of war on the other side of the planet without congressional approval, has come under criticism from legal scholars across the US political spectrum. As Tess Bridgeman wrote for Just Security following Biden’s February airstrikes:

“With former President Donald Trump’s term in office over, it’s time to evaluate his war powers legacy and where it leaves the Biden administration as it begins to grapple with how and when to use force abroad in the absence of congressional authorization. The picture that emerges from Trump’s war powers reporting to Congress is one of an extraordinarily broad vision of the president’s authority to use force abroad without congressional authorization, and of a willingness to exploit loopholes in reporting requirements in a way that obscures information on the use of force from the public.”

A willingness to exploit loopholes is right. But as long as acts of mass military violence serve as the glue which holds a globe-spanning empire together, death finds a way.

    • If the Rothschilds are trying to kill me with ‘an mRNA deadly injection’, how come I can’t get one, while Israel’s given more than half its population two doses of Pfizer’s vaccine?

      • Yes. Excellent point.

  • The Congress should have been busy impeaching, removing from office and charging the last seven or eight presidents with war crimes and violating the constitution of this country. The power to declare war is expressly denied the executive and given to the legislature. Instead that legislature has chosen to be complicit with both the war crimes and the flouting of the constitution, meaning that they should have been thrown out of office and incarcerated as well. What’s the constitutional remedy for that? And, don’t tell me elections! All our elections have been fraudulent charades for most (probably all) of my 74-yr existence. Any successful coup could only be accomplished by the very maniacs we want to stop massacring innocents around the globe, i.e., the US military. Any repeat of 6 January, which was very weak tea as “insurrections” go, will only increase the powers of the tyrants even further. If need be, the US armed forces can make any rebellious American city look like Fallujah in Iraq or Al-Raqqa in Syria. As the American state aggression peaks to a nuclear crescendo, it will become what must be called a no win situation, except for the surviving cockroaches and maybe the ET’s living beneath the ocean floor. I wish them luck.

    • Perhaps the military is the USA’s only hope. Do most join up out of a desire to massacre innocents abroad, or out of a mix of poverty and delusion, seeing few other ways to make a living and imagining the US a benevolent force in the world? Now if they were to refuse orders or change sides …

  • The self proclaimed queen of fairy tale princess land, aka our make believe president, has ordered our sons and daughters to murder total strangers on the other side of the planet again? I have to wonder just how long the rest of the world is going to patiently wait for us to cut that shit out.

    • Most of that world just bites their tongues because they are afraid of getting on Washington’s shit list like all the countries our American exceptionalists have “saved” with a good dose of shock & awe and/or our signature economic siege warfare. Even Russia and China, the only civilisations that could really punish America for its war crimes, does not want to pay the consequences of the total devastation and nuclear winter that would ensue for everyone.

The United States of American elites have made these deals at the expense of standards of living for American workers and small business owners, even at the expense of national security and stability.

    • I find a lot of dubious stuff in that, but I do agree the USA’s opposition to China has nothing to do with its supposed communism or communist leadership, and everything to do with the USA’s loss of hegemony.

  • I am not making light of your article and agree with you. However, as I read it, my mind went to an episode of court tv where a woman kept saying “show me the law” as they were proceeding. As if they would cite the statute she violated. It was sufficient for the court to say you are in violation. When she refused and resisted bailiffs carried her off to jail. You cite many times it is illegal but in what court. The international court has no bailiffs so they cannot enforce anything. Legal or illegal are only applicable terms if enforcement is possible. Therefore legality is moot as the thug does as he wishes and says to everyone this is ok as far as I am concerned.

    • Oh BB B for sure. Justice has been violated.

    • Do you think killing someone is only illegal if there’s a cop there to arrest you? Get a grip!

  • What was it again that Poppy Bush said thirty years ago? “We have before us the opportunity to forge for ourselves and for future generations a New World Order. A world where the rule of law – not the law of the jungle – governs the conduct of nations”.
You used to be able to find that excerpt on YouTube. Now you can type Bush NWO until you’re blue in the face, it has magically disappeared.
They probably thought there was a limit to extravagance…
Or maybe they were afraid some facetious Monty Pyrhon type characters would pick up the clip and replace the applause by comedic laughs.
You never know. People don’t respect anything these days.
And while they were at it, they could have added this declaration by Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee: “I believe these actions are overdue and highlight the continued need for the 2002 AUMF, or — at a minimum — the need for a comprehensive replacement before a repeal can be considered, especially given that Iranian-backed militias in Iraq are an ongoing threat to American troops.”
Where? In Fort Bragg? That’s where I’d punctuate with the comedic laughs…
Although, to be fair, it must be acknowledged that Adolf Hitler set a precedent by systematically retaliating whenever the resistance attacked his positions in the countries he was occupying. I’m kinda disappointed the Oklahoma senator didn’t point that out since it would immediately have made things a lot clearer.
Anyway congressmen are lucky there is Article II because the POTUS can twist the rhetoric into bombing without an agreement that they would feel compelled to give if asked, lest the military-industrial complex and the banks backing it withdrew the sponsoring of their great careers.
This way, they don’t lose face and everybody’s happy :o)

  • Since 1945 (Operation Unthinkable) Heaven is holding back the wind of the WW3. And so it will be until the appointed time. In the Book of Daniel, we read, “At the appointed time [“the king of the north”] will return back [Russia will regain the influence, which it lost after the break-up of the Soviet Union], and will enter into the south [this will be the beginning of the global nuclear war. The detonator will be the ethnic conflict to the south of Russia’s borders (Matthew 24:7)], but it will not be as the former [2008 – Georgia] or as the latter [Ukraine], for the dwellers of coastlands of Kittim [the distant West, to be precise – Americans] will come against him, and (he) will break down [will lose hope], and will go back.” (11:29, 30a) This will be a mutual slaughter. The “great sword” will also be used. (Revelation 6:4) Jesus characterized him in this way: “A frightening things both and extraordinary from sky powerful will be.” (Luke 21:11) Some ancient manuscripts contain the words “and frosts”. The Aramaic Peshitta: “and will be great frosts”. We call this today “nuclear winter”. In Mark 13:8 there are also words of Jesus: “and disorders” (in the sense of confusion and chaos). The Aramaic Peshitta: “and confusion” (on the state of public order). There will be also significant tremors along the length and breadth of the regions, food shortages and epidemics as a result of using this weapon. Jesus stated: “All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.” (Mt 24:8)

  • America needs an enemy or the natives will get restless. Biden is impotent and killing 7 people keeps critics away.

The idea that Americans are an invading force in the Mid East, while true is an idea that won’t get much traction. Americans think they are entitled to go wherever they want to do what they want to do. An entitlement not shared by climate refugees from Guatemala but if that is pointed out people get pissed. The contradiction is hard to take. Your brain could explode.

I read todays piece before I wrote my own today. See it here: https://chasingthesquirrel.com/ . You can see the influence at the end of todays entry. As I wrote the connection came naturally enough, but after I first read about the Biden airstrike here my reaction was only.

    • Fixed – Americans think they are entitled to go wherever they want to go, to do what they want to do.

      • There’s a 2015 documentary called Sherpa, in which a bunch of mountaineers in Nepal are unable to climb Everest because the Sherpas go on strike – and one of the USAmerican would-be mountaineers starts bewailing the terrorism preventing her doing what she wants where she wants.
“We’ve got a group here that’s terrorizing base camp. How do you anticipate that, you know? How do you… How do you mentally prepare yourself to get up here and then be turned away because a group of terrorists are demanding that westerners leave base camp?”

        • This was after 16 Sherpas had been killed in an ice avalanche.

  • The US is back! Color is returning to the ashen cheeks of American military empire. For the USA draconian embargoes and support of genocidal regimes like that of Saudi Arabia will never be enough. Only an invasion or, barring that, a good bombing of some hapless Third World country can fill that emptiness inside. And what impeccable timing! Just in time for the 4th of July. This will warm the cockles of the heart of every red-blooded knee-jerk flag-waving American across this “great” land. This city upon a (dung) hill.

  • The “president’s authority” to prosecute the GWOT for Globo-Cap does not really reside in the physical person of “the president”, but moves around invisibly, to protect it from attack by enemies, like that throng of insurrectionists that beguilingly walked single file into the capital without guns in January.
We think the elusive death-authority resides somewhere within, or within secure communication of the ethersphere of the pentagon most days, but if we knew more, we would pose a significant threat to freedom, and defensive actions might necessarily be taken against such threat.

  • Until we downsize our war machine and regain control of it as a strictly defensive “Defense” Department, it matters not one whit who is sitting in the oval office. Having a president who is obviously addled by dementia makes this point to the extreme for anyone who has eyes to see. I can’t help but imagine all the good that we could be doing at home and abroad with the manpower and resources wasted on our “defense”. When will the hypnotized masses turn off their TVs and wake up?

    • The US used to have a War Dept., but that sounded too negative, so it was changed to the Defense Dept. Since the Defense Dept. is too busy on offense, they created Homeland Security for defense. Now that Homeland Security is too busy attacking their own citizens, they are going to have to create a new “Defense Dept.”

I like the analogy presented by Thierry Meyssan that the Global War On Terror was World War Three and the “evil empire” lost and had to agree to some terms at the recent meeting between Putin and Biden.
Europe is having to foot the bill for now, but the price of the bill can be negotiated down, which is why Merkel wants to meet directly with Putin (and Macron). (NATO tool) Poland is currently objecting to that, but it looks inevitable. My personal opinion is that this negotiation was better settled before the global financial collapse/reset, so it could be less-worser. The days of the petrobuck are numbered. I just don’t know what the number is.
Thanks for sending me this collection of articles, Eleni (in neocolonialized Greece). The one I found about the new war on domestic middle-aged white racist terrorists in America fits right in, since the same tactics that worked so well against Sunni and Shia Muslims can be readily adapted to work against woke and un-woke Americans.

First, the basis of the failed Global War On Brown People in oil and mineral places.
The Rumsfeld/Cebrowski doctrine, by Thierry Meyssan
For two decades, the Pentagon has been applying the “Rumsfeld/Cebrowski doctrine” to the “wider Middle East”. Several times, it thought of extending it to the “Caribbean Basin”, but refrained from doing so, concentrating its power on its first target. The Pentagon acts as an autonomous decision-making center that is effectively outside the power of the president. It is a civil-military administration that imposes its objectives on the rest of the military.

  • Typical thuggish behavior by the US. I guess the much vaunted rules based order means the US makes the rules and orders others what to do. Gotta love freedom, democracy and American “values.”

  • The pandemic must be winding down. Vaccine in every arm’s race won until winter when booster campaign goes live. Now we return to our regularly scheduled programming: gun violence at home, dying empire reruns in the Middle East, cold wars old and new…

  • I am just an old man, but I suspect that Israel ordered President Biden to bomb something to prove the point that Israel is still in charge. Sooner or later the Russians are going to allow Iran, Iraq, and Syria to actually go after United States troops in the Middle East. When that happens the United States will have to either go to war with everybody or get its troops out of there ASAP!!

    • You may be right about Israel but I can’t help but think that the pentagon and/or our “intelligence” agencies may be calling the shots.

Either way, I think most people know that drooling pedo joe is not calling the shots.

  • Wow, that’s disgusting.

Things are definitely in an end-game situation. However, I think a lot of these acts, including the attempt to encircle Russia and China and massive exercises (note the recent attempt in the Black Sea) are not signs of strength, they are signs of weakness and desperation. All their regime change and economic warfare tactics have failed. This is all they have left, but the reality is that Russia unveiled their new generations of weapons. The US and NATO are generations behind, there is no tactical or strategic way in which they could win.

But these guys really believe in the whole idea of just managing perception, trying to trip people up and getting them to psych themselves out.

It just shows how completely incompetent and rotted out with decadence the Western oligarchy has become.

On the other hand, the sooner we recognize the West has completely lost and is completely bankrupt, the sooner we can actually start talking about dealing with the realities and actually engaging other nations and cultures in a manner informed by an actual understanding of the history and culture of nations outside the West, and our common interests in mutual economic development, especially in the domain of science and infrastructure.

This can’t be stated enough. These guys have lost, they need to go home. Their unipolar fantasy is over.

    • Exactly. I was just going to post the same article. But the truth is, the US is not bankrupt! Morally, yes. But economically speaking, the answer has been staring them in the face.

A New York Times Bestseller: The Deficit Myth
Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the People’s Economy

The leading thinker and most visible public advocate of modern monetary theory — the freshest and most important idea about economics in decades — delivers a radically different, bold, new understanding for how to build a just and prosperous society.

Stephanie Kelton’s brilliant exploration of modern monetary theory (MMT) dramatically changes our understanding of how we can best deal with crucial issues ranging from poverty and inequality to creating jobs, expanding health care coverage, climate change, and building resilient infrastructure. Any ambitious proposal, however, inevitably runs into the buzz saw of how to find the money to pay for it, rooted in myths about deficits that are hobbling us as a country.

Kelton busts through the myths that prevent us from taking action: that the federal government should budget like a household, that deficits will harm the next generation, crowd out private investment, and undermine long-term growth, and that entitlements are propelling us toward a grave fiscal crisis. MMT, as Kelton shows, shifts the terrain from narrow budgetary questions to one of broader economic and social benefits.

With its important new ways of understanding money, taxes, and the critical role of deficit spending, MMT redefines how to responsibly use our resources so that we can maximize our potential as a society. MMT gives us the power to imagine a new politics and a new economy and move from a narrative of scarcity to one of opportunity.”

      • Well of course money can be printed, in whatever quantity pleases us. Wealth cannot be. It requires an investment of time, effort and resources. It doesn’t matter if this pleases you or not, its simply a fact. The higher the money to wealth ratio, the less the money will buy. The notion that a lately developed money theory can displace several thousand years of economic fact is delusional.

        • MMT is not a theory to be used for us. It’s for the owners/deciders/Pentagon/Empire.
We are not supposed to talk about the free money, which can be used to make the world better for living beings.
That’s not how power is harnessed to maintain control. Control to maintain control is power.
That is most certainly not for us. We are harnessed by power. We are something like a resource, except when we become liabilities. What to do with liabilities is being broadly considered in “the halls of power”.

        • Money isn’t wealth, as you say.
But money can be used to direct resources, and taxes can be used to destroy money. So the US government could, if it chose, direct investment toward socially useful projects, without necessarily increasing the money to wealth ratio. Not that it will of course – even the most radical lawmakers seem committed to borrowing any money to be spent, thus enriching and empowering the financial sector, rather than simply spending it.

          • Government could, if it weren’t for the fact that every single one of them are founded on the premise that it has authority to kill you if you don’t go along. Such authority does not attract the sane.

      • I think it’s time to let go of all the financial wizardry. The quadrillion dollar financial derivatives bubble is the elephant in the room. Had it not been for the trillions pumped into the system starting in 2007, the majority of the Wall Street zombie banks would already have been vaporized.

We need an orderly bankruptcy re-organization, which just means that we cut the speculative financial cancer and protect the real economy, the farmers, producers, industry, manufacturing, infrastructure etc…

That’s what Glass-Steagall would do today, which is definitely something these guys fear, because it means the people can be saved, but only if we let all the Monopoly money go.

    • The article is back up. Thanks. Well worth reading.

ps – MMT is a pipe dream in my opinion – a tool, however noble, that the nefarious can easily take over, is a tool to be avoided in my humble opinion.

  • Maybe the Gollum will name a street after him too.

  • $howbiz: our zombie mascot hurls a few bolts of hellfire down from Mt. Olympus to $how he’s got The Right Stuff! (No Syrian AA/Sams covering the area?)

  • i cannot stand George W. Biden…i hate his eyes!
    ho-hum.
    back to the game….

  • Money, of course.

  • Why are we in the middle east? Seriously why?

    • Covert and overt operations re: oil, minerals, black market drugs, mercenaries and pentagon budgets. Strategic military positioning. Support for the zionist cult.

      Did I miss any?

      • Also, to enrich defense contractors.

      • Eretz Israel … Lebensraum for Balfouristan.

    • To expand empire, of course.
