Listen to a reading of this article:

I talk a lot about how we’re destroying our environment with a global system where human behavior is driven by the pursuit of profit, how the power structure which dominates that system does so by violence, exploitation, oppression, and the threat of nuclear war, and how we’re all going to die if we don’t change this system.

Whenever I say this I get a bunch of capitalism cultists bleating “You just don’t understand economics bruh,” which is the line they’ve been trained to say to anyone they see criticizing capitalism. It’s silly for a number of reasons, among them the fact that nobody who regurgitates that line understands economics themselves, and the fact that one’s understanding of economics has nothing to do with the death of the ecosystem our species relies on for survival.

The claim that anyone who opposes capitalism “just doesn’t understand economics” is premised on the notion that unfettered capitalism is the best way for a civilization to attain economic growth, which is arguably true; governments like China saw their economies explode when they started implementing elements of capitalism for pragmatic reasons. If you want to create a bunch of stuff and generate a tremendous amount of wealth, a good way to do that is by giving the capitalist class the protection of the state so they can rake in billions of dollars exploiting the global proletariat without being guillotined.

Problem is, that only looks like a valid point if economic growth is the only value by which you judge a system’s success. If you value quality of life, overall happiness, health, average lifespan, education, eliminating poverty, homelessness and hunger, and many other possible metrics, nations like the United States are far from ideal. If you value avoiding climate collapse, then the only way to think capitalism is the answer is to espouse on blind faith the belief that the world will be saved by greedy union-busting tech oligarchs who just want to make more stuff and send us all to space.

That’s not to say that socialism in and of itself has all the answers on this front either. Nations which have attempted socialism have not historically had the best environmental records, and even a hypothetical ideal socialist society where workers own all the means of production would not be inherently dissuaded from destroying the environment for profit.

What we need, if we are to turn away from the path of extinction and begin working in collaboration with our ecosystem, is a society which values the un-making of things.

Since the dawn of civilization humanity has valued achievement, conquest, invention, creation; it has valued doing things, and it has not valued the undoing of things. Creating a new kind of machine will bring you fame and fortune and put your name in the history books, while figuring out how to clean up all the pollution caused by the manufacturing and operation of that machine will not. Discovering a new way to kill thousands of people at a time will make you rich, while choosing to sit on that invention instead of unleashing that horror upon the world will not. Cutting down a tree to make toothpicks will make you money, while leaving it to grow for future generations will not.

Interestingly this disparity parallels with the inequality in traditional gender roles throughout the ages. While hunter-gatherer societies were largely egalitarian, after the invention of agriculture some twelve thousand years ago women came to be generally regarded as second-class citizens because they were unable to do fieldwork or conquer other tribes for their land. Since that time women have had very little say in the construction of our society and its values systems, and for that reason the work they traditionally do — cleaning, caring, conserving, resolving conflicts and building community — has gone unrewarded by money or esteem compared to traditional men’s work. Doing and making are valued, undoing and unmaking are not. The rise of capitalism poured rocket fuel on this dynamic.

Most mothers will tell you it’s a pretty thankless job compared to how much labor you pour into it from the moment you wake up in the morning to the moment you lay your head down at night. Because so much of her work goes into disappearing things — dirty diapers, laundry, messy floors, dishes in the sink, owwies, tears, tantrums — people who are conditioned by a society that has for millennia only valued making and doing tend to only notice when her work doesn’t get done. Their attention scans right over all the undoing she spent all day working on; it’s not paid, it’s not rewarded, and for the most part it’s not even appreciated.

In the same way, and for the same reason, people’s attention tends to scan right over the obvious solutions to the ecocidal trajectory our species has been on. Because thousands of years of conditioning have trained us to value doing things and making things and turning over a profit, our attention skips right over the simple solution right under our noses to do less and unmake things and stop pursuing profit at the expense of future generations.

This is why people who are awake to what’s going on in our world so often feel hopeless and despondent, and why the quote “it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism” resonates with so many. Because we live in a society that has no framework or conceptual infrastructure for valuing the disappearing of things, and because making things and turning a profit has no answer for our situation, solutions look impossible.

But solutions are not impossible. They just won’t involve turning millionaires into billionaires and billionaires into trillionaires.

Cleaning up this mess will take a lot of work and cost a lot, and the reward for that investment won’t be anyone getting rich or any power structure securing a geostrategic advantage, it will be a future for our children and grandchildren. The oceans for example are one of our planet’s biggest carbon sinks, and their ability to function as such is being choked off by plastics in the water. Getting that plastic out of there in an environment-friendly way won’t turn a profit like clearing a forest or drilling an oil field will, so if we leave it to the Captains of Industry nothing will be done about it. Capitalism offers no incentive to do it.

Ending growth for its own sake, producing less, consuming less, paying people to stay home instead of commuting to pointless jobs; all of these would help the ecosystem far more than producing some new battery made of strip-mined materials. But there’s no profit, so they’re overlooked as viable solutions. You’re only ever going to look for solutions to problems through the reality tunnel you’ve been conditioned to look through. For thousands of years human civilization has been valuing the making of more things and devaluing the unmaking of things, when the latter is what we need right now.

A hidden cost is mental illness. In order to manipulate people to buy things that they don’t need with money they don’t have to keep capitalism from collapsing, you need to keep up a non-stop barrage of trauma-inducing consumerist propaganda. We are all suffering from various mental disorders, from the subtle to the extreme, as a result of this relentless onslaught of brainwashing. Some of these disorders are so prevalent that people assume they are normal. Everything from eating disorders and obesity, to hoarding and shopping addictions, can be traced back to advertising constantly and repetitively ringing our pavlovian bells, while also constantly reminding us that we are not perfect or whole or worthy of love (but maybe if you buy this you will be).

Many readers will attest that you don’t have to be that far along in your waking up journey to start becoming really sensitive to the psychological violence of TV advertising. A TV ad break suddenly becomes physically repellant. In the future we will look back on how coercive and non-consensual mass-scale advertising is and shake our heads in wonder that it was ever allowed to be a thing. Of course, by then, advertising will barely work because too many people will be too awake to manipulate in mass numbers.

But for now, we are manipulated by the millions into consuming massive amounts of products that aren’t good for us, don’t serve us, or are just another thing that we won’t hardly use but we need to find some cupboard space for. Ending advertising would allow so much health to rebuild in our minds and reduce consumption of materials dramatically; but ending advertising would mean ending capitalism. They are inseparable. We have the tools now to find everything we need via word-of-mouth, but capitalism requires infinite growth. Even your mom-and-pop shop owner feel the pressure to grow in order to keep up cash flow and cover increasing overheads.

Growth is baked in to capitalism, and right now we need more than anything just to chill. Do less, be less, compete less, expect less of ourselves and each other, produce less, consume less, commute less; but take more naps, be more kind, be more gentle with ourselves and each other, laugh more, cry more, feel more, and regenerate all the energy stolen from us from a rat race that we were never gonna win anyway.

Only when we have systems in place that make this possible will we find the energy to start cleaning up our world and begin living in harmony and integrity with the very ecosystem that we are intrinsically a part of.

  1. Until people care for others and their environment nothing will change…

  2. Unmaking – Cradle to Cradle says it best. Disposable products and recycling really suck. Requiring that all things that are made, need to be reused for the same purpose, eliminates the need to go back to repeatedly rape Mother Nature, and also virtually eliminates landfills. The problem is not so much capitalism, as uncontrolled capitalism.

  3. What you call “modern day capitalism” is in fact socialism. America is a communist country. Many of the most important Marx’s socialist planks were installed in America long ago. Free public schooling (indoctrination), Income tax (slave tax), central banking, and control by elite, etc.

The London bankers wrote the National Banking Act of 1863 and bought off Senator John Sherman to get it passed. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 was passed in the middle of the night in late December while 1/3 of congress was gone for Christmas vacation. That is when the debasement of currency was “legalized” in direct violation of the constitution. The Coinage Act of 1792 called for hanging anyone who debased America’s currency, so their shenanigans was a capital offense but they got away with it and installed the elitist socialist economy that we have to deal with now. That is also why we endure endless wars. “War Is A Racket”

Socialism is a debt based economic system and that is the reason for limitless growth because the more debt in the economy the more money in the system.

Capitalism is a commodity based economic system. The more minerals, trinkets, or food the economy has the more money in the system.

    1. This is so incredibly far off base. There is no doubt to anyone with a brain that what you’re seeing is the direct consequence of capitalism–particularly as capitalism’s exponential growth-based system begins to inevitably falter. As the number of people the capitalist system fails to provide for grows, we see increased surveillance, crackdowns on dissent, and generally authoritarian measures introduced to protect the ruling class who benefit off the current system. The whole federal reserve stuff, if you actually look into it, is very hand in glove for what we call neoliberal capitalism, its most modern iteration, often referred to as late-stage capitalism. Reserve Banks oversee monetary policy in a world where currency is commoditized and traded, and its value derived from speculation–this is just another example of expanding markets to create more growth and investment–which is absolutely CENTRAL to the capitalist project. Calling everything authoritarian “communism” blinds you from seeing the uniquely authoritarian nature of capitalism in action.

      1. Very well-stated.

      2. Capitalism is natural interaction between productive individuals.

Socialism was invented by Kings & Queens based on lies to fool the masses and hide their theft. Money for nothing. Sheesh. Classism. Rulers vs. ruled. Masters own the slaves. Marx was a puppet.
“By this means the government may secretly and unobserved, confiscate the wealth of the people, and not one man in a million will detect the theft.”

― John Maynard Keynes, The Economic Consequences of the Peace

  4. While i usually share your ideas, i beleive you are slightly off on this one.
For one backbuilding, disassembling and recycling is a giant industry, one which does not at all suffer from lack of reputation or recognition.
Second disassembling stuff is imho no solution at all because, as with all things that give you resources, people will ALWAYS look for new ways to use those. Energy saved on more efficient devices will not really be saved, but used otherwise.
Alternatively i suggest establishing a ceiling, meaning that there must be a limit to the (financial) value a single person can possess. Even if you use an amount that may seem ridiculously high and have to establish means to prevent people from being able to sneak past that, it would be important to create a limit for private wealth. That would also take money out of lobbyism and necessarily put production means under public control, which in turn would reduce tax evasion btw.
Lastly, the one thing we urgently need to have less of, is people themselves, especially those in the so called global north who consume so much more than their fair share.

  5. It is interesting that Caitlin Johnstone would use capitalism to denounce capitalism.

    1. Ah, sometimes truly you have to use a tool created previously to destroy itself.

After you do that, then take the tool and burn it or bury it or throw it onto the bottom of the ocean.

Did you all see that swimmer from Tunisia? 18 years old in lane 8 in the 400 meter mens breast-stroke event I think it was….the event doesn’t matter. He was in Lane 8 barely making it to the final event by 0.14 seconds. But at the end of the day, he won. He stayed in the thick of it throughout the whole race and today when I watched the recording of the live event half-way through being I already knew, I exclaimed “when they gonna say a thing about that fella in Lane 8”. Moments afterwards they did, but till the last 50 meters they still doubted this 18-year old from Tunisia. My guess is, that young swimming Olympian is not one to doubt. He prevailed in the end. He held out enough energy to stay in 1st place and touch first. It was inspirational to watch it all. I’m inspired now to study up on Tunisia. I’m inspired by 18-year olds.

      1. I believe that Caitlin is using capitalism because it is natural, good, and effective.

I love capitalism as I love nature and peace. I loathe socialism because it is an unnatural social construct based on lies and deceit.

        1. John – I can agree with about half of what you said.
          ~
          So there is common ground.

I’m not being flippant, it is just sometimes when you ain’t talking face-to-face there is no way to really know who you are communicating with, but I say with all honesty that I agree with 50% + with what you said.
          ~
The only piece I’d leave you with is don’t judge “socialism” with harshness, even the proponents of socialism are effing clueless as to what it actually is. Kropotkin commented upon this in his works and it was funny – even if I don’t agree with all he espouses.
          ~
I think capitalism works best when it is close up and personal. One neighbor talking to another.

        2. 1) Explain how socialism is an unnatural social construct, if you can. Also why capitalism conversely is a natural social construct.

          2) Capitalism is based on limitless growth. Limitless growth is unsustainable, ergo capitalism is unsustainable. Granted you may have a different view of what capitalism is, something that does not require or lead to economic growth, what that might be would be interesting to hear about.

    2. Capitalism and Socialism are the only two economic constructs.

Capitalism originated from natural human actions… people mining, growing, and sewing resources then trading them with others. For example, Caitlin’s blog is a form of sewing as she creates informative prose which others find valuable and are willing to pay her maybe with coins mined from the earth. That’s Capitalism. Growing a garden is also a capitalist endeavor.

Socialism was created by Karl Marx who actually plagiarized Victor Considerant’s “Principles du Socialisme” 1843. Socialism originated in deceit, paid for by aristocrats, and promoted by lies. Socialism is branded as an equality economic system when in fact it is, by design, “a blueprint for elitist control” – Anthony Sutton

I have no understanding why you would believe, “Capitalism is based on limitless growth.” I don’t agree.

      1. The only two?? Is it wrong, then, to teach that capitalism replaced feudalism? There are various opinions when capitalism developed but it seems most peg it between the 14th and 18th centuries.

What we may have here is a disagreement in what both capitalism and socialism entail. Whatever, I doubt that things are as black and white as your statement implies. 😉

As for growth, modern capitalists certainly seem to believe that they must grow or perish. That is a belief that leads to a dead end and is a belief best tossed into the trash can.

Just for kicks you can take a look at this:
        http://historyworld.net/wrldhis/PlainTextHistoriesResponsive.asp?historyid=aa49

        1. From your article, “Full-scale capitalism results in an inevitable divide between employer and employed, or capital and labour.”

I don’t believe that. In a capitalist economic system employees can leave an employer at will.

          1. “I don’t believe that. In a capitalist economic system employees can leave an employer at will.”

You left out “and starve to death if nothing else is available”

Maybe both capitalism and socialism have become terms that mean different things to different people and are defined by whoever uses them to mean whatever they want. Both, of course, are social constructs, there is nothing natural about either.

Modern capitalism as expressed by the big corporations and the stock markets has come to be dominated by the belief that growth is the path to survival. That is a death march for society as we know it. It is also counter to the collective, cooperative method of social and economic structure. Call collective cooperative methods what you will.

Collectivist societies that pursue endless growth, by the way, are just as bad as capitalist ones, even though collectivism is not predicated on growth.

  6. I’d say that one of the fundamental flaws of capitalism is the inability to incorporate the cost of externalities into the price of the product. For example, a gallon of gasoline reflects only the cost of production, distribution and profit for the various entities along the chain. It does not include the environmental costs (global warming, oil spills, etc.) nor healthcare costs (treatments for lung cancer, ephysema, etc.) associated with the pollution from burning gasoline.

If all of these costs were included in the price of a gallon, a lot less gasoline would be used.

This logic applies to virtually every product produced in a capitalist economy.

  7. For quite a while, I’ve called for trashing our obsolete political, social and financial systems and creating a new system that combines them into a radically new program that, first and foremost, sees to the needs of the people.
Clearly, unless we wish to return to the caves. manufacturing and/or building some things will always be necessary. Whether coffee makers or buildings, we must return to a time when durability and function were keys, not planned obsolescence.
I have too many thoughts to discuss herein, of what such a society would look like. The one thing I do know with a certainty, via John Lennon, is that it must involve “all the people sharing all the world.”

    1. OK, I have no idea what I’m going to type next, but I’m going to try to Un-Make something on the fly. Here goes:

So, it’s not just the tiny minority 0.1% of rich and powerful that are causing the problems of this world, it is everyone, the vast majority, who has a place on the Ponzi ladder – everyone who believes the lie of freedom, work harder to get rich, and buy, buy buy – enslaved by materialism, debt, fear and greed.

Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (Official Video 2019)

    1. Until very recently, I vaguely associated Marvin Gaye with bland romantic crooning pop pap. Then I read and heard a lot about What’s Going On with its fiftieth anniversary, and changed my mind!

  16. It’s almost like reading Kant. Suddenly, the fundamental criticism of Kantianism shows up to sum up all this thing as it goes: to enter in her world of undoing things we must deny the thing in itself, but to remain we must accept the thing in itself.

  17. In 1971, I read a wonderful book called Touch the Earth published by Teresa McLuhan. Its content has accompanied me ever since, for which I’ll feel ever grateful. It’s made of XIXth century quotes by Native Americans – essentially Sioux – that we routinely only see yapping on their horses in westerns while the entitled idiots that they described then now make fun of any attempt at painting them in more noble traits. These Injuns saw then in the Pale Face’s ways what we only began to detect in the 70’s and find increasingly embarrassing.
    Excerpts:
    – “We did not think of the great open plains, the beautiful rolling hills and the winding streams as ‘wild’. Only to the white man was nature a ‘wilderness’ and only to him was the land ‘infested’ with ‘wild’ animals and ‘savage’ people. To us it was tame. Earth was bountiful and we were surrounded with the blessings of the Great Mystery. Only when the hairy man came from the east to heap brutal injustices upon us and the families we loved did our world start getting wild.
    – We always had a lot. Our children never suffered from hunger… The Rock River rapids provided us with excellent fish and the very fertile earth always gave us good crops of corn, beans and squash. Our village had been here for more than a hundred years during which we have inhabited the valley without anybody ever trying to take it from us. If a seer had predicted in those days what would happen, nobody would have believed him.
    – The Lakota was full of a compassion and love of nature growing with age. This is why the old Indians dwelt on the ground where the forces of life reside. To sit or lie allowed them to think more clearly and to perceive more vividly. They then could meditate more intensely about the mystery of life and feel closer to the forces surrounding them. The old Lakota was wise. He knew that the heart of man alienated from nature becomes hard and that the non-respect of all that lives and grows leads to the non-respect of man himself. So he raised his children in the sweet influence of nature.
    – Look brothers, the spring has come, the earth has received the kisses of the sun. Each grain has awoken and it’s to this mysterious power that we too owe our existence. That’s why we concede to our neighbors, including our animal neighbors as much right to live on this earth as ourselves. However we now have to deal with another race, small and weak when our fathers met it but that has become tyrannical. Strangely enough, they want to cultivate the ground and their desire to possess is pathological. These people make laws that the rich can break but not the poor and collect taxes from the poor and the weak to keep the rich that govern them in luxury. They claim our common mother earth for themselves alone and barricade themselves against their neighbors. They disfigure it with their buildings and dejections. This nation is like the torrent of melted snow that gets out of its bed and destroys everything it passes through.
    – The white men claimed loud and clear that their laws were for everybody but it soon became obvious that while they were trying to make us adopt them, they themselves had no problem breaking them. Their wise men advised us to convert to their religion but we soon discovered that they had several. We found them all the harder to comprehend that no two white men could agree about them. It troubled us a lot until we understood that the white man didn’t take his religion any more seriously than his laws. He just kept them at hand as tools to use to his advantage in his relationship with others”.

There once was a herd of bison so full of itself it took up the whole horizon. Ah, there will always be more grass the herd though carelessly. But then they started getting killed off one at a time on broken bodies remained silent on the plains. Then the bones started piling up. Then a lesson was learned and it was one for the history books. Some lessons are hard and some are soft. Hard learning seems to be the only way left nowadays. Oh well, when all you brothers and sisters and cousins and mates and lovers and friends have their bones left to decay in the wind, what lesson is learned?

  18. Ah, the wisdom of the Buddha Ms Caitlin Johnstone speaks volumes again to her readers. Here in New York City money and profit have replaced god, morals, ethics, humility, and even love! The pursuit of money and the pursuit of ” things ” have pushed everything else aside. Capitalism insures that humanity follows the evil ways of Satan without any guilt or any remorse! Unfortunately, our entire society does not know how to function sanely anymore; we are just rapidly swirling down the toilet to hell!

I have no freaking idea what I was thinking when I affixed them in thin-set so many years ago but nonetheless I get a lot of pleasure wondering why it turned out how it did. Plus, I still wonder why so many corporations are incorporated in the measly state of Delaware.

    2. I rent a room to live. No car. No score card neither credit card. All what I have can go inside of a backpack. It was not always like this but 80% of my whole life. My life is the meaning of undoing things in my own peculiar way. Not sure if the rest of you really know it in a daily basis. But oh man, you know how to make it sound a poem. It’s not. It’s hard. It’s not colorful. It’s daily painstaking looking how to survive till the next day. My beauty and richness are on my mind. The rest sucks.

  23. What is power. It is ability to collect money from other individuals by taxation (extortion) , debt, sale of goods and services with excess markup and advertising ( deception ) , war and stealing. Money ( capital) is then used to produce more money to control (corrupt) governments, corporations, army, police and becomes institution by itself- for the ruling criminal oligarchy control over everyone.

  24. I want to take a mind trip. I want to compare two worlds – the earth on which we live and another planet that is identical to ours, except that in that planet’s solar system there has been a brief solar event whose radiation has not only instantaneously killed all of the people on that planet, but, amazingly, also slowed down the physical deterioration of any of the things that the planet’s deceased inhabitants created.

Hearing about the calamity on the twin planet, millions of people from our planet, who just happen to be unemployed ex-technicians from various professions (yes, a very competent bunch that have been made unemployed and increasingly desperate by machines), jump into spacecraft and fly to that other planet. But, before they leave, they agree that all of what is on the other planet will be “owned” equally among them and used for the good of all. (Yes, you’re right, that is exactly where I’m going.)

Just like there is on this planet, there is an internet on the other planet, so the immigrants instantly realize that a so-called representative government will not be necessary……….. on the other planet. In that place there shall be direct democracy. People will hammer out important decisions among themselves using the internet as a means of virtually instantaneous mass communication.

There will be only one “nation” on this new world. That nation will cover the entire world. There will be no other nation to export to. There will be no other nation to import from. The immigrants will either design a stand-alone economic system that does not need either imports or exports, or they will die.

Every person in the new world will be a “world citizen”. There will be only one set of rules for every person. Again, human beings will either sink or swim together on this new world.

After the new immigrants arrive on their new planet, using existing transportation systems, they disperse all over their planet so that they can get their new (old) machines up and running; fields plowed and planted; hospitals operating, etc. (Yes, it wasn’t easy. But with the common good in mind, people were successful. Just accept it for the moment.)

The immigrants soon realize that it takes very few people (far fewer than immigrated) to keep the machines running, food on the table, etc., and with some more design engineering and automation, even fewer people will be required as time goes on. Not only that, but the products of these machines can be made to a much better quality then they apparently were previously, so these products will last far longer. As a result, it is realized that perhaps some of the huge machines/factories can be operated far less frequently than they used to be by the previous inhabitants. For example, automobiles soon come to be made much simpler, easier to fix and much more reliable. They have a far greater useful lifespan than they once had.

The people enjoy leisure time, developing their artistic abilities, playing games and other non-productive activities.

Rather than unfairly have the same small number of people constantly toiling on the machines, the people decide to divide up, or “distribute”, the human labor that is necessary to operate the machines, plow the fields, construct buildings, roads, etc. That is, everyone has to work on the machines, etc., but for only a short period of time each year. And as the machines get improved and further automated, even less labor is required and, therefore, even more of each individual’s time is “free”.

The newly-designed machines in this new world come to do almost all of the things that must be done, and the “profit” from the machines – leisure time and the actual products of the machines – is equally divided among all people.

Some of the leisure time is used for training all people in the variety of tasks they will be undertaking – everything from brain surgery to sewage treatment. Apprenticeship and training via video (just like Youtube on planet earth!) are found to be the ideal ways of training people. It is soon discovered that most medical and dental procedures can be either performed by robots or learned in a fraction of the time once thought to be absolutely necessary.

Through apprenticeship and video schooling, the population becomes very knowledgeable, so they soon realize that by reducing their own population by slow attrition – by having only one or two children – the remaining population has even less to do (less water treatment, housing, electricity, food, everything), so their descendants have even more free time to themselves.

These people’s new-found religion is two-faceted — the Golden Rule and the continually-evolving simplicity, ease-of-use, and, most importantly, high-quality-construction and, therefore, long usable life of the products they create. Unlike the people did back on planet Earth, the people on this new world strive to manufacture things only once — things that with simple, inexpensive maintenance, last essentially forever.

Transportation systems move people to and from the machines and other places where labor is needed, as well as moving people about the planet for other less practical reasons.

Life is great in the new world.

    The End

My point is that there are possible alternative ways of living (economic systems) to the present one, but the only thing we are allowed to hear in our prefect Matrix of education and 24/7 propaganda is that there is NO alternative (TINA) to the present arrangement, other than the experimental ones that are at this very moment being literally dreamed up by the present entrenched powers-that-be in order to serve only themselves.

All of us commenters and, particularly, Caitlin and Tim have to RIGHT NOW do exactly what our billionaire Elite Overlords are doing – at first “imagining” a different arrangement than the one we were born into (a greed-based arrangement that has for literally centuries benefited only a microscopic percentage of the population and which has also led the human species of animal to the edge of extinction either by environmental catastrophe or nuclear war) and then implementing that new arrangement by electing representatives who have that same “vision” of a better arrangement and will carry out their constituents’ wishes against an entrenched, near-omnipotent opposition.

Keep in mind that I intended my hypothetical world to stimulate discussion of alternative arrangements. If you can imagine a better arrangement than the one I have imagined and a better way to bring that arrangement into reality than voting (such as doing what the Yellow Vests and the Hong Kong “protesters” have been doing for a long time, or killing a bunch of people), please type it out right here, right now. Anyhow, who gets to decide who is a psychopath and who is not.
            ~
I think the decision is formed on the scale of harm. Initially this will be easy being the mass of scale is obvious. Once the scales get back in basic balance, then we just need to chill a bit and slow down the pendulum that always swings back and forth.
            ~
            So, my point is.
            SCALE MATTERS!

            1. It’s just a first draft.

          3. So, on this 1st draft instead of to please a group of people, all we have to do is to keep sugarcoating a group of machines? I’m certain I got it wrong. Maybe I’m a excluded psychopath citizen. Guess I’ll have to work on that trailer to live the rest of my life.

      2. What a journey!
Maybe I would not define better the meaning of emotional prostitution as you did: “how much ass one was willing to kiss on the way up as well as the ability to backstab your competitors”.

    2. It’s a beautiful dream. In order to start a new beginning you gotta burn a lot of energy. I wonder how much of it you had to left behind when writing. It’s a whole new universe. I have nothing worthy to share is such scale. Thanks for sharing.

    3. “Now that we have passed the point of sustainability for our level of consumption every new bit of growth is yet another nail in the coffin of our society.”
For many in affluent societies, maybe. Many elsewhere still lack basics like clean water and sufficient food. Tell them no, it’s another nail in ‘our’ coffin? Should they be culled in order to raise the average level of consumption? Perhaps you wouldn’t go for these solutions, but there’s no suggestion as to how we’re supposed to get the world population down to 4 billion (to live like Mexicans), or 1.5 billion (to live like Canadians), let alone how either can be achieved without much violence and misery.

      1. Ian. You pick out a tid bit and suggest this or that.
        What is your point?

            1. Not in the slightest bit obvious. Reduce our consumption, population, or both. Probably going to happen anyway whether we like it or not, but how many volunteers?

        2. Ian – responding to your message deep in the thread.
          ~
Don’t be a goof-ball. All we need to do is reduce the consumption. The population will find the sweet spot as only it can when folks are Mutually Aiding one another.

So simple you could trip over it.
          ~
          Tuck Everlasting simple.
          BK

          1. Then who’s going to volunteer to reduce their consumption? Those who still lack food and clean water? Those already consuming way more than the global average?
Sorry, I see nothing simple about it. I can’t see the world’s poor embracing “every new bit of growth is yet another nail in the coffin of our society.” Nor do I envisage the world’s wealthy nations volunteering to cut their consumption levels.
What do you think will bring about this global drop in consumption?

            1. It will happen when it is the only choice left.
              ~
I hope it happens before that, and that, and that alone is why I spend my time here. Why are you here Ian?
              ~
              Ken

              1. It boils down to hope. Well, you can call that simple.

      2. The piece is about the problem, not solutions. First we need to understand the problem, and most do not seem to be aware of it.

        1. Fair enough. I agree generally with most of it, but I can’t see how we get there, other than finding, in twenty or forty years’ time, we’re heading there fast, with unplanned and uncontrolled drops in population and consumption.

          1. Sadly, you are probably right. Donella Meadows, et al, laid out the problem around fifty years ago and all that we have done is gone from complete denial to distractions and band-aids to avoid tackling the core issue.

  25. Economists are no help because they operate on theory and assumptions not facts. They do not understand the base mechanism of an economy, the money system. Monetary science is not taught in any school or university. Capitalism is the private control of the money system for profit, allowing control of much more than just the means of production, but the media and governments as well. A system of usury which has psychological impacts as 95% of mental activity is subconscious. Thus a for-profit money system creates a society obsessed with profits. Being a human created system we can reverse this psychological effect by changing the system to one that issues all money publicly for care of public needs as its first use. This would create a caring society.

    1. Bingo! Unfortunately it’s never gonna happen. The last chance to do that was in 2008; the banksters should have been nationalized then but our feckless quisling toad’s decided to make them stronger and let the lumen proletariat pick up the tab. China saw what happens when the banksters run the show and they’re not letting it happen…yet. Unfortunately, to support their 1.4 billions they are importing raw material from around the world. There’s just too many people for the earth to support so personally I see no way out of ecological collapse. Thy club of Rome figured that out, half a century ago but we did nothing but come up with technology fixes to delay the inevitability of social collapse. We’re still looking for technofixes to delay longer. My advice, enjoy the rest of your life, dystopian social collapse is coming.

    2. Study for New York Chamber of Commerce 1906, “By the control of its rate of interest and of its issues of notes it would be able to exert great influence upon the money market and upon public opinion. Such power is not possessed by any institution in the United States.”

The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 control of “public opinion”… WWI 1914 and wars ever since.

End The Fed… End the False Narrative… Live A Good Life.

    3. I agree with this.
      We need a caring society.
We need to understand the difference between being gentle all the time and being gentle when you can.

Here we go again, more WEF fantasy bullshit under the guise of a Leftist anti-imperialist website. It’s the same old redundant crap: “You’ll OWN Nothing and be happy.”

It should be noted, we “don’t” have capitalism we have a monopolistic monster gobbling up all small mom- and-pop businesses. Under the circumstances, capitalism might be refreshing.

The WEF is trying to suck the naive into a “totalitarian technocracy.” Yeah guys, you don’t have to travel to a useless meaningless job you can sit in your tiny apartment vegetating like a piece of shit owning nothing while just a few possess and control everything.

Actually, it would’ve been better if humans remained hunter-gatherers, but that was not in the Homo sapien DNA. Perhaps, the WEF technocrats will alter the genome so that the designated “useless” won’t even require food and housing.

I should mention, there’s still a tiny opening in the “freedom window,” the technocratic eugenicists have
not yet nailed it completely shut. But, that won’t last long. The innocuous “Halo

      3. You have no idea how many are dead from COVID. The numbers we are supposed to believe are generated by those most eager to sell you a vaccine, and they’ve been so heavily manipulated that they have holes worn in them.
All of last year, and up to January 20 this year, the WHO, CDC, and FDA all recommended 40+ cycles be used in the PCR test, KNOWING that it would produce enormous numbers of false positives. Saint Fauci himself said it was useless of 35+ were used, and less than 30 better yet.

  31. Caitlin,

In this short essay you summarize very well, and with an enviable economy of words, the essence of the problem which, as you point out, is going to end life in any form in which we would want to live it on this planet. As you explain, infinite growth, required by the rapacious brand of capitalism now being practiced, is incompatible with our survival. And yet, the sociopaths who run the show, are unmoved. As long as they are in control of our electoral/political system, there is no realistic hope for us. Thank you for this well written article.

“This is really a bet we make all the time, between environmentalists and climate change deniers, paid for with the lives of our children.”

    1. The metals involved have changed but the blindness has not. Not a fucking bit of any of it is actually necessary. Blind leading the blind.

  33. Normally I find your articles provocative. However when you start spouting about climate collapse I quickly become turned off. Climate Change is just another fear tactic spread by the oligarchy that wish to rule us. Stop before you tell me CO2 is bad for the planet

    1. Fred – with due respect it seems you missed the whole point of the article. It wasn’t about Climate Change directly. That was not the main topic discussed.

      1. Really Ken? let me quote from the article “If you value avoiding climate collapse, then the only way to think capitalism is the answer is to espouse on blind faith the belief that the world will be saved by greedy union-busting tech oligarchs who just want to make more stuff and send us all to space.”

        1. It’s not climate collapse. It’s environmental collapse. Brought to you by consumerism.

  34. Recently in a hotel in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania watching the local news I was surprised that for every few minutes of comparitively innocuous placid polite news there were 5 or 6 crazy phonetic in-your-face ear-blasting drive-you-crazy commercials. They were all a blur so I couldn’t remember what they were advertising when the news returned forever briefly.

Having placidly not watched commercial TV in years I realize that this assault on the senses causes damage to all who allow themselves to be subject to it. No one do my fellow Americans are rapidly losing it and are incapable of realizing that the system is against them. Let alone rising up against it.

    1. I bet I know what they were advertising. Choice. Abundance. Consumerism. More. The US Dream. The Success of Capitalism. Manifest Destiny.
The precise products are irrelevant to the overall propaganda.

    2. Damage is more innocuous than merely to the senses.

Caitin, You words of wisdom are very much appreciated – Capitalism is the scourge of civilization. But please direct you energies and words of wisdom to our current problem i.e; now the FBI wants families and friends to snitch on each other. Thousands are dying from these experimental jabs. Millions more have experienced serious health problems. I understand your reluctance to broach this subject – I’m sure you have your reasons for doing so.

  36. Global Corporate Capitalism’s (GCP) most important commodity is the privately owned automobile. It is the life blood of GCP. Everyone is always shouting about the damage caused by the fossil fuel industry but there is silence about the damage caused by the auto industry. The auto industry and the fossil fuel industry rose up in tandem over 100 years ago and since that time every car that has ever been built has put about 44 tons of Co2 into the atmosphere during it’s life time. You cannot have the privately owned automobile without the fossil fuel industry and you can’t have the fossil fuel industry without the privately owned auto mobile. According to Automotive Age, there are now more than 200 million SUVs on the planet and the auto industry just keeps building more and more every day. Who besides a car salesmen thinks that is a good idea? Certainly not the minimum wage worker who has to drive to work in order to work to drive. We are enslaved to the tyranny of the cars first transportation system not by the choices you and I make but by the choices that are made for us.

  37. “Ending advertising would allow so much health to rebuild in our minds and reduce consumption of materials dramatically.”
Carl Sagan/Contact (1985): AdNix: “a module that, when a television commercial appeared, automatically muted the sound.” “Before there could be any coordinated response from the television advertising industry, AdNix had become wildly popular. It forced advertisers and networks into new choices of carrier-wave strategy, each of which [was] countered with a new invention. It was a kind of electronic warfare.”

    1. Banning advertising would be the single most useful thing in enabling people to recover theirselves. In the absence of that there is but struggle for the lost inherent sanity.

  38. The current evil system can be only changed , and only if the following is done:

    1. Eliminate the wealthy families that control the committee of 300, corporations and banks, and seize the wealth. Their system is more than 300 years old and must be removed.
    2. Eliminate corruption in governments, rearrange governments to run under no debt, no taxation on earnings and no artificial legislation. Legislation shall be introduced by referendum or consensus only.
    3. Corporations , banks and Reserve banks shall be liable to pay minimum 50% tax.
    4. Schools, health and distribution of energy and water energy should not be private.

  40. I know nothing about Hinduism (and I would be delighted if some Hindu could enlighten met) but my naive take is that their godhead has three aspects: Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer.

I vaguely remember novels where the bad guys, as you can imagine, are a cult of Shiva worshipers and I always wondered why anyone would choose such a path. But maybe those Hindus understood more than I realize: Shiva is as necessary as Brahma, and so is Vishnu. Balance is essential to a functioning world.

So does this article make you a demon worshiping Shiva acolyte? (Just kidding! But I bet there are people who would be happy to willfully misinterpret the sentiment and lob that accusation.)

Also, in terms of “women’s work” vs “men’s work”, I think maybe from this perspective women are doing more the work of Vishnu the Preserver than Shiva the Destroyer, which might be more in tune with many men’s proclivities. As for Brahma, I’m sure there are many men who would like to claim they are the principal creators, but given the miracle of birth, I’m guessing they would have a hard time making that claim stick.

    Namaste.
