Listen to a reading of this article:

It takes a touch of madness to take seriously the possibility that your entire society is insane.

That’s why devoted critics of the oligarchic empire are often a bit odd; something in them was driven to wade into waters that most people aren’t psychologically prepared to enter.

It’s not that questioning the status quo is madness; just the opposite: it’s that “Maybe everything I’ve been taught is a lie and everyone I know is wrong and all the information I’m getting is designed to serve the powerful?” isn’t the sort of question you tend to ask when everything’s going your way. If you had a happy idyllic childhood where mummy and daddy loved you very much and have lived a life where things generally go okay for you, you’ll likely be psychologically stable, but you’re a lot less likely to go “Hey wait a minute—maybe all of this is bullshit!” That type of insight tends to fall to those who are just a hair off-kilter.

So here’s to all you heroic lunatics, waking the world up one pair of eyelids at a time. The smileyface gear-turners might scoff at you right now, but the world needs you, not them.

Consider the possibility that all the Russia hysteria we’ve been fed the last few years was carefully rolled out to manufacture consent for the exact escalations against Russia that we’re seeing today, and all the framing of Russia as the hostile aggressor has been ass backwards.

Let’s not forget after all that this has been fundamentally driven from the beginning by the same intelligence agencies who have an extensive history of lying about exactly this sort of thing.

Politicians and pundits feel free to claim with absolute certainty that Russia is about to launch an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine because five years of Russia hysteria have taught them that they will suffer exactly zero professional consequences when they’re proven wrong.

Of all the countless westerners who learned the word “Crimea” five minutes ago and have been mindlessly bleating it at anyone who criticizes the US narrative on Ukraine, exactly zero of them are aware that an overwhelming supermajority of Crimeans prefer to be part of Russia.

A referendum was held in 2014 in which Crimeans overwhelmingly voted to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation, the results of which mirrored a similar vote in 1991 to secede from Ukraine which the Ukrainian government overruled. These results have been further confirmed by western pollsters in 2015 and 2019. The fact that the overwhelming majority of Crimeans prefer to be part of Russia is a settled matter beyond dispute.

To be honest I lost a lot of respect for a lot of people on the left for the way they chose at this crucial point in history to pour tons of energy into tearing down other anti-imperialist socialists who don’t agree with them about government Covid measures. People on both sides did this.

By this I obviously don’t mean disagreement or debate about vax mandates or whatever, I mean the way people have been making it about the person and not the ideas. Actively smearing and attacking members of a small powerless faction and creating deep sectarian enmity where there didn’t used to be any.

I mean, we’re staring down the barrel of extinction on multiple fronts while the depraved status quo becomes more and more entrenched, and you think it’s a wise expenditure of energy to sow division and trash the reputation of powerless people who don’t agree with you on one thing? Says a lot about your clarity.

I think it revealed a lot about who’s actually in this to help make the world a better place and who’s just in it for ego and aggrandizement. If someone disagreeing with you about this one thing means you need to focus your fire on them instead of on the empire, you’re just in this for ego.

  1. CJ,
    .
    I struggled with this.
    .
My whole drive is for solidarity and coalition building. “Not having to agree on everything” is a cornerstone. And then, in the 3rd year, watching fellow “Leftists” not say they “didn’t know”: but cheering mandatory sales for these companies; cheering mandatory movement of stocks for masks and tests; cheering the internment camps being built, used for citizens, now refugees, and soon enough citizens again; and cheering (directly or indirectly by aggressively pushing NYT matrix narratives) both censorship of “misinformation’ (some of the most censored people did this); and the transfer of trillions of dollars in a handful of months; With plans going forward, years, full of back orders and new factories and “streamlined drug products” and permanent streamlined processes, all pre-approved.
    .
All already on the books. All publically available, to my (once?) thoughtful colleagues. What was I to think? There is a limit. It is not one issue. It is all of the issues, amplified in this one event. And they were standing with the machine at default, because they were afraid. That is the truth.
    .
I understand we all have different skill sets, and this happens to be in my wheelhouse. However, I am not talking about getting into the weeds on epidemic modelling, virology or immunology (though in 3y I did hope a few more would take a long weekend to give it a try). The point is: who is going to stand at my side, when push comes to shove, if in this moment they do not move – and speak against (!) – those trying to stand up to these measures, to slow them, stall them, maybe even stop them? Stay ahead of them, as much as possible.
    .
Who are these people, really, compared to who I thought they were? Consider: When literal internment camps were being built, then operational, and it all goes largely without comment; forced medical procedures being enacted on their neighbors kids, for capital and no other reason; when millions are placed arbitrarily under house arrest, with 5k limits on there 1h per day exercise limit (if lucky enough to get that); police smashing car windows to pull people out and fine them, for not wearing a masks when alone, lest they…(?); and the kicker – the trillions of dollars in regular, established methods, ongoing corruption. Helping no one. Setting up future harms to come. Where was the Left?
    .
These people? These people care about our “international global brothers and sisters”? These people! These people understand climate models and the limits, and the complexity of data collection, especially over large time scales and massive (planet sized) areas? When they can not follow basic modelling and data collection, in real time, that they are living through? These people?
    .
They find themselves saying the same thing as multinational company press releases and the NYT, but no alarm bells go off? These people? Who do not skip a beat: these people? If anything, I was more patient than I should have been. Perhaps I was negligent.
    .
Perhaps they were not hearing any other messaging (though, again, it was no different to the tactics and “disaster capital” moves seen in every single other issue that the Left had ever faced. That they themselves had written about and all spoken on before). And even then, they hear messaging, that seems to say it is required, so they just immediately turn on the minorities and underprivileged? More than that, become enraged mouthpieces, angry that other former fellow Leftists haven’t just fallen in line: But with no explanation as to how they reached their own novel position?
    .
It is more than a disagreement on an issue. It is all the issues, under stress. It was the first “revolution” real world test, that they all always talk about, that most have ever seen. And they fell in line, and turned each other in. And not because they were convinced on the merits of “emergency”, but because they were scared, and it was easier. To do anything else was too hard. It meant surface level alliances that didn’t match their twitter bios. And that, for most, was the bridge too far.
    .
I held out till the 3rd year, before I snapped. But the responses, still, do not easily allow me to inspire feelings of “solidarity” in myself, like once was there. And it is lonely. And difficult to repair: because it feels correct. Even with compassion – it is not incorrect. My previous position was.
    .
It makes me look at the people who use to inspire me, and see something else. I don’t trust them anymore! I question their faculties. And I feel they are, perhaps objectively, best protected *from themselves*. Best for all of us. It makes me think that they may even want it. They demand it! It makes me think they will settle for nothing else. And maybe it has always been that way.
    .
It makes me think like the machine.
    .
And I don’t prefer it, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t the case. And science is one of the few areas where it really did not have to be this way. Or maybe I’m just hungry. -JC

  3. In reply to Tigerlilly, 30th January 2022:
The Climate Change campaign isn’t over yet. A minor campaign that I did live through was the campaign against DDT. From what I can make out, it was very similar in motivations and execution to this campaign to get people to accept dangerous new vaccines.
DDT was nearing the end of its copyrighted period, which meant that the people who held the copyrights would soon lose a great deal of income. They took advantage of public ignorance and panic, created by people like Rachel Carson (the book “Silent Spring”), to convince the public that DDT was dangerous to the environment, in order to be able to sell all the new poisons that they had developed to replace it. All the superficial people never found out. They still believe the original story.
I am inclined to disregard your comments about Malone. That is the tactic of playing the man, not the ball. Similarly (sorry), I don’t know anything about Gingrich’s marital record (I’m an Australian, and we don’t always hear all those juicy American scandals), but I’m not inclined to judge his political integrity by that. A man can be a real mongrel to his wives and still be honest in business or politics. Also, who is to say, looking at an intimate personal relationship from the outside, who was really the victimised party? I wouldn’t have any confidence in my ability to do that.
I think you’re right about tobacco, on the whole, but I don’t think it was ever a secret that tobacco was bad for you. I can remember seeing posters showing one boy about half the size of another one, with the message that the small one was the one who smoked growing up.

    1. Gingrich is a Leninist. Read What Is To Be Done from 1904 and it’s Gingrich’s playbook for the One True Party. Thought so 25 years ago, still do.

  4. I am tired of the “sickness” and “mental illness” tropes. They are misleading. Read Arendt about Eichmann. Evil is a moral failure. We allow evil to spawn out of moral weakness.

  9. Like you, Caitlin, I’m not usually in the habit of giving the people in charge much credit for good intentions. However, one thought that has occurred to me in relation to the current flu panic is this: what if, from a certain high-up point of view, it is really a DRILL?
I don’t know much about medicine or epidemiology, but as I understand it, it is entirely possible that a REAL plague disease could come along at any time. Like a collision with a large-enough space object, this could be a civilisation-ending event. Maybe at a certain high level, well above all the local politicians and other officials who are having a whale of a time acting important, taking charge, and issuing orders without knowing what the effects will be and without bothering to adhere to their rules themselves, there are people who can think, and who think it is a good idea to use this fairly mild disease as a way of testing society out for a real epidemic.
I think it is the wrong thing to do, because I don’t think they should deceive us. But deception, like force, is a prerogative of government. Maybe they just take it for granted that the drill will be a better drill if we are all led to believe that it is the real thing.

    1. Hmm, thing is a large and increasing number of people have concluded that the entire medical establishment are corrupt, dishonest, craven profiteers and shouldn’t be trusted with a paracetamol. So not a very successful drill then.

      1. That’s true. I don’t think they should be allowed to get away with it. But let’s face it: there is a whole science in universities, devoted to studying how to deceive and manage the public. When I went to university, the introductory courses went under names like “Organisational Behaviour.” I think if you reacted badly to the sort of cynical stuff they taught, they knew you were not a suitable person to become part of the (criminal) elite.
Who knows how much they have advanced since then? Like old-fashioned American con-men, who had a slogan, “There’s one born every day,” they rely on the forgetfulness of the public, on naive ignorance and trust.
I have a special interest in economics, and in that subject, there is a long history of falsification and mystification, which relies on public forgetfulness and the ignorance of rising generations about what has gone before.
I don’t know if it is strictly relevant, but I have a theory that the longer a system of government lasts, the more barnacles it has attached to it. We need not just a change of government parties, but a change of system. Of course, that suggestion could bring out the government boys with handcuffs.

Never would have believed it till I saw it.

  11. Neil Young has always reinvented himself to stay relevant over a long career. This Spotify controversy is another example of that, posing as an iconic liberal hero supporting the current authoritarian regime to promote his new album. Ain’t capitalism grand (for a few)? Talking about sanity, all my liberal friends moved to the right with the Democratic Party and it’s lonely out here in the hinterlands of the left.

  12. The saying, “In an insane world the sane man must appear insane” has alot of validity in our world today. Society is tidal in that it is constantly changing, never static. It also seems to repeat patterns when conditions are favorable. Thus we are approaching a period of madness. During such periods sanity becomes the enemy of the state. Who is the insane man or woman? One whose values and perspective are grounded and unmoved by societal changes.

    1. Can’t beat Jiddu Krishnamurti’s ““It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society” though… :o)

    2. When the truth is so distorted over many years of propaganda, the concept of mass formation psychosis as described recently by Dr Malone, must in and of itself cause a form of mass insanity. This article nearly decribes the methods:

Joe Rogan, Elon Musk react to Canadian trucker convoy
Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk and podcaster Joe Rogan have spoken about the Canadian truckers driving across the country to protest the government’s Covid-19 mandates, after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced them as a “fringe minority” with “unacceptable views.”
The ‘Freedom Convoy’ that set out from British Columbia and is expected to reach the Canadian capital of Ottawa sometime this weekend was ignored by the major media outlets at first. As it approached Ontario, however, the convoy became a political football.
Trudeau denounced the truckers and said they “do not represent the views of Canadians” in a televised speech on Wednesday. On Thursday morning, he announced he had been “exposed” to Covid-19 and would quarantine for five days – thereby missing the convoy’s arrival in Ottawa – even though he has already had the virus and been vaccinated and boosted.
Jagmeet Singh, whose New Democrats are propping up Trudeau’s minority government, also condemned the truckers and accused them of spreading “false information” via “inflammatory, divisive and hateful comments.” He also criticized his brother-in-law for donating to the protest. Canadian media reported that Jodhveer Singh Dhaliwal had asked for his donation back after being told of “the true nature” of the convoy...
Benjamin Dichter, one of the organizers of the ‘Freedom Convoy’ and the group’s official spokesman, said they are peaceful and law-abiding. He told the Toronto Sun that the convoy is a protest over Trudeau’s government forcing drivers to wear masks even when alone inside their trucks, a vaccine mandate, and a requirement to get the jab before crossing the US-Canada border.

“What a long, strange trip it’s been” Truckin’, Grateful Dead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pafY6sZt0FE

The 11,000-truck, 93-mile long convoy is traveling from the country’s westernmost province, British Columbia, toward Ottawa, the country’s capital, where they will hold a demonstration on Jan. 29. The truckers said they will not leave until the mandates are lifted…
As of Jan. 15, the Canadian government required all truck drivers entering Canada from the U.S., regardless of citizenship, to be fully vaccinated against COVID. Any driver who cannot show proof of vaccination will be denied entry and placed in quarantine for two weeks.
The U.S. government implemented the same policy last week on the American side of the border.
“We’re going to end mandates,” convoy co-organizer Chris Barber said.
“It’s not about anti-vaccination — that’s everybody’s personal choice — this is about the mandates,” said Barber.
    He added:
“The straw that broke the camel’s back was the U.S.A. border for commercial drivers, and you have to show the COVID passport — a lot of guys are going to lose their jobs over that.”
Barber, a truck driver of 28 years, said he himself is vaccinated, but he wants to support fellow drivers who are not.
“This (COVID-19 vaccination) passport has gone too far,” said Barber. “If we can’t get across the border freely, and we’re being forced to [be vaccinated] by the federal government, we can take a stand or we can’t.”

    1. Ninety-three mile of monster trucks into Trudeau’s flip side? Aouch! That’s bound to be painful! :o)

    2. Perhaps I fail to appreciate Trudeau’s logic. He has an “up-to-date” “vaccination” “status” (the term “fully vaccinated” is being dropped because of a “need” for apparently endless “boosters”). So why the self-quarantine?
Could it be the shots prevent neither infection nor transmission? Well, fancy that. Yet mandates and “passports” are the order of the day.
      ~
Roger Waters penned “Fletcher Memorial Home” some 30 years ago. Trudeau is apparently pining for his place amongst incurable tyrants, overgrown infants, and wasters of life and limb. We can’t give them their island soon enough.

  15. The last few days I’m seeing leftists that I usually agree with channelling their energy into siding with Neil Young’s (and now Joni Mitchell’s) Spotify boycott, the campaign to try to cancel Joe Rogan. Of all the things wrong in the world they choose this one to die in a ditch over? That Joe Rogan, and others like Russel Brand, have such huge numbers of people following them is a good thing. This is exactly the disruption of the establishment media narrative needed to change the world for the better. Leftists side with the forces of the status quo are incredibly misguided. They are siding with their true worst enemy, the very forces that do everything block their ideas at every turn. These misguided people seem to fear the hordes of “other” thinking people who exist beyond their own echo chambers. But they should do the opposite and embrace them, as this is the key to change.

    1. Embracing counterfactual propaganda is not the answer to anything, regardless of which side of the issue you happen to be on.

      1. All the surviving fans of Neil Young (yes both of them!) have been pleased about the move though, so at least, it made three people happy. However Neil Young is bound to regret it sorely when he stops receiving his monthly check for $0.25 from Spotify for the stuff these two guys had been listening to since he wrote his eerily prescient song A Needle And The Damage’s Done” :o)

      2. Glad someone said it.

It’s not that we “disagree with these people over one small issue” … it’s the fact that they largely reside in an entire alternative reality comprised of “alternative facts” (easily verifiable lies).

We can’t have a functional society where 20% of the population *prefers* to be lied to, and thinks the rest of society is oppressing them for not letting them overthrow the election. Attempting to negotiate or compromise with people who aren’t approaching any issue or policy with any level of good faith or basic logic is confounding and unlikely to result in anything but bad outcomes.

Looking at the same facts and coming to a different conclusion is as American as apple pie (Still waiting for trickle down economics to “work”). Making up “facts” as you go along and gleefully disseminating blatantly manufactured bullshit (to grift from the gullible) and to support your preference for being selfish under a misplaced sense of “freedom” is just a bridge to far for most of us.

If you want to be a selfish idiot, then at least own up that. Don’t make the rest of us have to pretend like what Joe Rogan and Dr. Oz (two modern day snake oil salesmen) have to say about vaccines is remotely relevant and needs to be considered and rebutted on a daily basis.

        1. Tigerlily: How much do you get from Pfizer for saying this kind of stuff? Because it is obvious to anyone with two connected brain cells that you’re in no position to discuss the merits of an mRNA “vaccine” with Dr Robert Malone who co-invented the damn thing but more likely regurgitating the talking points of Albert Bourla, a trained veterinarian turned businessman and CEO of Pfizer, who knows as much about Covid vaccines (beyond the price) as Al Capone did about classical ballet. Can you at least fathom how ridiculous your rhetoric is and how you’d better ask your masters if they’ve got new stuff in store? At a time when Justin Trudeau isolates because he’s got Covid in spite of being double-jabbed and boosted, it’s gonna be increasingly difficult to prop up the myth that this experimental gene therapy abusively called vaccine is anything else than the snake oil you refer to. As for Joe Rogan, he asks legitimate questions – as journalists should do and don’t these days -, does what he thinks best and doesn’t have Covid, contrary to Trudeau. Choose your camp comrade! And keep your entitled virtue-signalling inanities for mass.

          1. Trudeau alledgedly had the shots. If he did actually get them then hev is less shrewd and dumber than he looks. However most politicians are not known for their intellect but instead their thirst for power.

          2. Which part of “the virus continues to evolve quickly because we were rubbish at fully vaccinating world populations on any kind of urgent timeline has escaped your notice and understanding?

Also, the fact that the fully vaccinated are hospitalized at lower rates and die at lower rates seems to indicate having the vaccine is still much safer and beneficial for the vast majority of people than not having it.

        2. The only way to stop people from complaining about being oppressed is to actually oppress them so they realize how good they had it when they thought they were being oppressed.

        3. What makes you say that the people on the other side from you on this issue believe “easily verifiable lies”? Couldn’t you give us credit for possibly understanding something you may have missed? It’s not a question of “counterfactual propaganda.”
I suppose you have been getting your information from the leftist mass media. I have been getting mine mostly from Zerohedge, so probably we are accepting different facts. But leaving aside the facts, reasonable caution should suggest that we shouldn’t trust drug companies that want to make huge amounts of money selling new vaccines, not measly amounts selling tried-and-proven drugs, or power-mad bureaucrats who see another heaven-sent opportunity to order people around.
Those of us who question the U.S. election results aren’t necessarily acting in bad faith, either. I think both Newt Gingrich and Rand Paul declared flatly that the election was stolen, and from this distance, I would trust them as individuals more than I would trust any tribunal or commission of enquiry.

          1. So, instead of trusting the consensus of numerous institutions spread throughout the globe doing various work and research on vaccines for the past 30 years… we should instead put faith in the one disgruntled guy trying to lay excessive claim to “inventing” the vaccines, who was foolish enough to quit before finishing his doctorate, and subsequently felt devalued and unappreciated for his contributions to the work.

Such that he now feels entitled to fame, notoriety, and of course MONEY that he may have missed out on in the past by making an unfortunate decision.

It’s like some of you never lived through the Big Tobacco and Climate Change campaigns.

There’s always a couple of people willing to give up all their personal integrity for a big payday. Are we supposed to keep believing “the conspiracy” always involves the 99.98% of the cancer researchers, climatologists, and epidemiologists who reach some general consensus via their diverse body of work… and not the .02% of “authorities” who are the outlier and we later find out have a personal financial state in arguing the “fringe” idea which 20 years down the road we find out was intentionally manufactured BS, whose only purpose was to muddy the waters.

Ahh yes, Newt Gingrich the man with so much integrity he cheated on TWO different wives and tried to get one of them to agree to the terms of their divorce while she was in a hospital bed, post cancer surgery.

“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” -Dr. Maya Angelou

Gingrich has always been a complete hypocrite. There’s been a deliberate effort on the right to marry pseudo-“Christian Conservative Values” with the politicians who will do the bidding of moneyed interest Libertarians. The only thing they really stand for at the end of the day is maintaining power and money.

That’s they’ve fooled people like you into thinking you have shared values is one the most successful and widespread propaganda schemes the US has ever seen. And apparently they don’t even have to pay most of you to willingly copy and paste their dogma every day on your social media.

lol! That’s exactly what I believe most of this covid bullshit is essentially about. That is, to change perspectives on what oppression is. To ‘reset’ oppression so that post plandemic we will be in exactly the same place we were pre-plandemic, BUT! Believing we have it better due to perspective smoke and mirrors.
