Listen to a reading of this article:

The Icelandic newspaper Stundin reports that a key witness in the US prosecution of Julian Assange has admitted in an interview with the outlet that he fabricated critical accusations in the indictment against the WikiLeaks founder.

“A major witness in the United States’ Department of Justice case against Julian Assange has admitted to fabricating key accusations in the indictment against the Wikileaks founder,” Stundin reports. “The witness, who has a documented history with sociopathy and has received several convictions for sexual abuse of minors and wide-ranging financial fraud, made the admission in a newly published interview in Stundin where he also confessed to having continued his crime spree whilst working with the Department of Justice and FBI and receiving a promise of immunity from prosecution.”

This major witness would be Iceland’s Sigurdur “Sigi” Thordarson, a paid FBI informant who after his short-lived association with WikiLeaks has been found guilty of sexually abusing nine boys as well as embezzlement, fraud, and theft in his home country. A court-appointed psychologist has found him to be a sociopath.

“The court found that Sigurður is by all definitions a sociopath, suffering from a severe anti-social personality disorder. However, the court found that he did know the difference between right and wrong and could not be considered insane and could therefore stand trial,” Iceland Magazine reported in 2015 during Thordarson’s child abuse case.

This was all public knowledge when the US government was building its case to extradite Julian Assange to America and try him under the Patriot Act for journalistic activity which exposed US war crimes, a prosecution for which Assange is still locked up in Belmarsh Prison pending Washington’s appeal of a UK court’s denial of the extradition request. And now we know for a fact that the odious person whose testimony formed the basis for much of that prosecution was lying.

“US officials presented an updated version of an indictment against him to a Magistrate court in London last summer,” Stundin says. “The veracity of the information contained therein is now directly contradicted by the main witness, whose testimony it is based on.”

What this means is that the US decided to add more accusations to its previous indictment because charging a journalist for standard journalistic practices was too weak on its own, and now this decision has bitten them in the ass.

The article’s authors explain that contrary to the claims in that indictment, “Thordarson now admits to Stundin that Assange never asked him to hack or access phone recordings of MPs” and “further admits the claim, that Assange had instructed or asked him to access computers in order to find any such recordings, is false.”

Thordarson’s testimony was cited extensively by British Magistrate Vanessa Baraitser when she was providing her ruling on the extradition request which is currently under appeal, and it looks pretty silly now that we know it was bogus. Her ruling repeats the prosecution’s claim that Assange “asked Teenager [code for Thordarson] to hack into computers to obtain information including audio recordings of phone conversations between high-ranking officials, including members of the Parliament,” but Thordarson has now recanted this claim.

While the judgement on the extradition request reads, “It is alleged that Mr. Assange and Teenager failed a joint attempt to decrypt a file stolen from a ‘NATO country 1’ [ code for Iceland] bank”, Thordarson told Stundin that “this actually refers to a well publicised event in which an encrypted file was leaked from an Icelandic bank and assumed to contain information about defaulted loans provided by the Icelandic Landsbanki,” and that “Nothing supports the claim that this file was even ‘stolen’ per se, as it was assumed to have been distributed by whistleblowers from inside the failed bank.”

While the ruling repeats the claim that Assange “used the unauthorized access given to him by a source, to access a government website of NATO country-1 used to track police vehicles,” Thordarson told Stundin that “Assange never asked for any such access.”

These revelations are entirely damning.

“This is the end of the case against Julian Assange,” tweeted NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, adding, “If Biden continues to seek the extradition of a publisher under an indictment poisoned top-to-bottom with false testimony admitted by its own star witness, the damage to the United States’ reputation on press freedom would last for a generation. It’s unavoidable.”

“Now it’s time to have an international inquiry on how Sweden, UK, US, Ecuador and Australia have handled the Julian Assange case. My FOIA provides evidence nothing is normal in this case,” tweeted investigative journalist Stefania Maurizi.

It just says so much that the most powerful government in the world, with all its essentially limitless resources, needed to build its case against Assange on false testimony from a diagnosed sociopath and convicted child molester. That’s how strong their case was against a journalist whose only “crime” was telling the truth about the powerful.

This after we learned that Assange and his lawyers were spied on by the CIA, that he is being tortured, that his seven-year de facto imprisonment prior to his two-year stay in Belmarsh was arbitrary detention and unjust from the very beginning, and that the pretext for keeping him there was itself fallacious.

This is a farce. The fact that this man remains behind bars is an outrage.

  1. In the US Army in Germany in 1980 I received six months of explicit, detailed, felony, terrorist threats. They came from army personnel John P. Vogel and specialist Stavrinakis. Both insisted they had connections with terrorist cells in Europe. Later, both threatened events happened exactly as described, killing 104 people and injuring 265. I survived the first one. I wrote the FBI after leaving the army. I detailed the threats and the train derailment and the bombing the morning after the derailment.

These FBI idiots wrote back. They said you are out of the army now. If they contact you or follow you or threaten you again, contact the FBI.

Oddly enough in 1997 I got detailed information about the attacks of September 11, 2001. Did I tell people what was going to happen? Yes, I told more than 100 people. But not the FBI. I told people in law enforcement whose negligence was easily predictable.

After the attacks were executed I wrote to the FBI. I reminded them of the answer they gave me after the terrorist threats, the derailment in Ireland and the bombing of the train station is Bologna. I wrote that if I get information on terrorist attacks again, I would contact the FBI.

Turn about is fair play. The fact is they are not going to get away with all this. There are all kinds of things going on behind the scenes. You will not know these machinations until they happen in the real world. Keep you attention on Washington and New York.

  2. Prosecutors are scum.
“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?… The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.” ― Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn , The Gulag Archipelago 1918–1956
“The great masses of men, though theoretically free, are seen to submit supinely to oppression and exploitation of a hundred abhorrent sorts. Have they no means of resistance? Obviously they have. The worst tyrant, even under democratic plutocracy, has but one throat to slit. The moment the majority decided to overthrow him he would be overthrown. But the majority lacks the resolution; it cannot imagine taking the risks.” ~ H. L. Mencken (1926). “Notes on Democracy,” p. 50, Alfred A. Knopf

  3. This is another disgusting revelation about the fbi’s and the doj’s standard operating procedures.
Just imagine all of the poor fuckers that they have gotten away with pulling this shit on over all of these decades (during which they have been operating) who the general population has never been made aware of. It must be thousands, probably many thousands, of people.

    1. Yes, I am aware of it. I had a similar experience. It was a totally false accusation by a liar and a false witness. He said I had followed him to his house and threatened his life. I did not know this person, had never spoken to him in any way, and had no idea whatsoever where he lived. From what I gathered, he was some fruit cake who hung out at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. They did not take it to the point of arrest. These bastards in power, if they want to get you, and they cannot do it legally, they will fabricate totally bogus bullshit charges. Something they are not aware of is this. They are going to pay for all this in ways they would never dream imaginable. Something big is coming up. They are not going to get away with it.

Thank you for bringing this to wider attention than the “popular” press has done. I have seen nothing in the NYT or on CNN. What are they afraid of? Not willing to defend one of their own?

One does not need to agree with his perspective; one needs only to defend his right to say it.

    1. Rich people with media ties never admit to being wrong. They already said Assange was a spy. Thorardson could have spray painted all of this stuff on the side of the white house and they still would have to ignore it. Same with WMD’s in Iraq- as far as the NYT is concerned, he really did have them despite the fact that he obviously didn’t.

    2. He’s a journalist. They read scripts. Not one of them.

  7. I’m so disgusted with my country’s supposed leadership that is nothing more that a string of marionettes whose strings are pulled by a relatively small number of wealthy and powerful sociopaths.
It’s OK for us to nearly, so far, destroy Syria, when the truth is it’s merely revenge against Assad, because he wouldn’t let us build an oil pipeline across his country. It’s OK to supply a worse dictator, from Saudi Arabia, as it destroys Yemen and, with our help, has already starved over 20,000 innocent women and children civilians to death. It’s OK that we enforced sanctions against Venezuela and tried to effect a coup in the process, starving over 40,000 Venezuelans to death – all because its leadership would not allow already wealthy Americans from stealing its oil fields and the entire country. It’a OK that we accuse Russia of meddling in our elections, when its common practice for the U.S. to meddle in elections all over the globe, It’s OK for the government to have a program of propaganda and lies to get our citizens to hate and fear Russia and China, when the U.S. has over 1000 military installations globally, but Russia has only 10 and China even fewer.
But it’s not OK for Julian Assange, Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning to expose the crimes of our country’s leadership.
Free Julian Assange and welcome Edward Snowden home.

    1. Harry Nydick, I second the motion. Free Julian Assange and welcome Edward Snowden back home.

Indeed the portrait of Dorrian looks rather gray but McDonald makes mincemeat of her.
More seriously, the whole thing is another farce that could be subtitled as: “We’ve got economic and political control of the mainstream media and making them toe the line is all in a day’s work but what’s the world coming to if we allow bloggers free speech?” It’s in keeping with the current social media censorship. Also I read somewhere that Dorrian’s name had to be presented to the Queen by Sturgeon so she can move up a notch by replacing an old judge who’s retiring. Maybe she’s also a friend of Vanessa Baraitser or simply thought the way Murray painted her was akin to lese-majesty and took it personal. Sad state of affair though whichever way you look at it and not the best PR for Scotland – which I’ve always loved.

  10. Oh Dear, and here I am, believing the hype about the Rule Of Law being applied to all such matters, then the evidence becoming available, proving the Rule Of Law as claimed is an Ass. What a surprise, NOT !

  11. The US and the British gangster regimes will come up with new bogus charges to keep Assange incarcerated. If Vanessa Baraitser were a real judge and not an MI5 agent, she would immediately drop the case and set Assange free. The Assange case will haunt the US and the Brits for at least decades.

  12. The US government probably doesn’t care that a small number of people know the truth when it can continue to deceive a much larger number of people with its lies. It’s a question of numbers for them.
While the pressure on them, and the British government, will increase a little after this news, they will probably ignore it or point to other lies that support their indictment.
And even if the British courts declare it a mistrial, they will simply concoct another set of lies and restart their case.
Also, I don’t think it matters to them much anymore whether Assange is in a British jail or an American one – he’s where they want him, locked up.

  13. Sociopathy and pedophilia?

  15. First, you have to understand and accept that religion is a scam thought up by the philosophical elites to establish and maintain the social order. Then along came money, conjured out of nothing with rules set up by the financial elites to advantage them. Then along came “rule of law”; another scam set up by the political elites to advantage them again… you don’t really believe that the laws were written by god, carried down from the mountain.. do you? In Canada, we kidnapped Ms. Meng on behalf of empire we are a vassal state to and we have to listen to our feckless quisling toad’s in Ottawa on the rule of law, what complete BS. For those who thought journalism would hold the ruling classes feet to the fire, this should disabuse you of that fraud. I didn’t know till now that internet domain’s were controlled by the empire…I do now. We as western societies are currently being taught to self flagellate like the Germans were/are taught after WWII; those who resist are fired and sometimes jailed and the corporate media is in full support. It’s 1984 for the working classes and the brave new world for the middle class with an understanding that they can put you in 1984 any time they choose. As George Carlin said “they own you”! If this website was ever considered a threat, it would cease to exist tout suite. If you were more than keyboard Warriors, the glove would come off the mailed fist very quickly and you would not enjoy.

  16. The usual strategy for U.S. prosecutors is to make as many charges against a defendant as possible, in the hopes of pressuring them into a plea deal that avoids a trial. I doubt they care much whether Thodarson lied and may have understood all along that the accusations were concocted; they will worry about whether they can continue with the charges. I wonder why sociopath Thodarson confessed? Did he feel safe doing so?

    1. I’d say there’s a STRONG possibility Thodarson may be “SKRIPLISED” by the Russians in short order. A quick investigation into his financial affairs could also quickly establish a motive for his lies.

      1. I think you are suggesting the Russians are going to poison Thodarson. I am not sure what the Russians would gain by this. The British Skripal narrative has problems.

If you’re looking for “truth and justice” you won’t find it in America, that’s not the way it works when it comes to “political prisoners.” Assange, exposed war crimes and political corruption so he’s disliked by all segments of the US security state. They’re angry with Assange for exposing war crimes, but many Liberal deep-state apparatchiks are very upset with Assange and believe the release of Podesta’s emails caused Hillary’s 2016 loss.

What more can be said, Bush/Cheney genocides the entire Middle East and Hillary devastates Libya and Syria killing hundreds of thousands, but they’re honored by the security state, while the person who exposes their crimes languish indefinitely in prison.

Caitlin, I’ve only glanced through this column and the comments, so perhaps I can be accused of being sloppy. Also, I would like to say that, on the facts as we know them, I am completely on Julian Assange’s side, and think that those who are keeping him in prison should themselves be prosecuted, and maybe some of them executed. That said, I keep getting a feeling that we are all somehow being played with.
Julian apparently had a relationship with a woman all the time he was supposedly locked up in that embassy, and had children with her. I don’t think that happens to prisoners in regular jails. Also, why in hell didn’t Trump stay on his side when he became President? He could have won the forgiveness and probably support of an awful lot of people by pulling the dogs off Assange. Why didn’t he? Was it because he was brought into the circle of knowledge of what was really going on?
I can’t really add any more than that. I certainly do not know what is going on myself. I just get the feeling that something stinks. I would appreciate any light that can be shed on this, even in the form of speculation. If Julian Assange has really spent all this time locked up, for nothing more than exposing the crimes of an insane empire, he is a hero and deserves the gratitude of all of us. But none of us seems to do anything about it. If what I was taught in school about European history is correct, this sort of public apathy isn’t unusual. It’s pretty pathetic all the same.

    1. I’m not sure exactly who you’re referring to Paul when you say ‘all of us’. The reality is that tens of millions of people have been led to believe he’s a rapist and put peoples lives in danger etc etc – ie everything turned on its head by the Establishment’s black propagandists. It is of course rather ironic for you to say that Julian has spent all this time locked up ‘for nothing more than exposing the crimes’ etc. THAT is precisely WHY he HAS spent all that time locked up (and facing decades more of being permanently locked up)!

As for your assertion that none of us – and THAT could only be referring to those of us who know the reality of the situation and seen through the smears and character assassination) seems to do anything about it. So what would you have us do……. break him out of prison perhaps! Your logic to somehow arrive at it all being down to public apathy – and that ‘it’s pretty pathetic – is quite astounding!

      Talk about muddled thinking!

      1. Paul Douglas Rackemann Avatar
        Paul Douglas Rackemann

Friend, when I said “all of us,” I was referring to all the people who have voiced indignation about what is being done to Julian Assange. I haven’t heard of anyone defending his imprisonment, except maybe for a few Establishment journalists, who I certainly don’t take seriously. I take it for granted that it is common ground among “us” that he is imprisoned by a corrupt system.
As for breaking him out of prison, I’ll admit that I am not tough enough to do that myself. However, there have been men who have. I don’t think the government would have got away with that in America before the Civil War. Even quite recently, you may recall, there was a man who shot up a restaurant in which he had been led to believe that some of Hillary Clinton’s cronies were molesting children. He may have been mistaken, but he did show an admirable intention to get to the bottom of it.

    2. “Julian apparently had a relationship with a woman all the time he was supposedly locked up in that embassy, and had children with her. I don’t think that happens to prisoners in regular jails.”
I think your last sentence is right as regards UK jails, but Julian wasn’t locked up in jail at the time, he was taking refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy.

I met Jullian Assange’s father yesterday in Oakland, California on his tour of the United States in support of his son and we chatted briefly after the speeches. What a fine, remarkable man he is. There was quite a stir in the meeting (which was well attended) when this news was reported. I had just read about it online yesterday morning.

Julian Assange is an innocent man who is imprisoned and tortured for practicing journalism and publishing. Period. Now we know now low the U.S., UK, Sweden and Ecuadorean governments are willing to go to punish Julian for revealing the ugly truths about these “supposed” democracies. The latter no doubt under direct threat from the U.S. war machine and the IMF, that tool of financial blackmail.

A mistrial must be declared at once. Don’t forget that when the Nixon administration charged Daniel Ellsberg under the Espionage Act for revealing the Pentgon Papers in 1971, the case was dropped immediately when it was learned that the plumbers had broken into the office of Ellsberg’s psychiatrist to get something on him. Much worse was done to Julian Assange.

  24. “This is a farce. The fact that this man remains behind bars is an outrage”.
Truer words have never been written. However it was a farce from the get go. Without even mentioning the Swedish rape hoax that led to the Ecuadorian Embassy asylum, the way the trial was carried out, according to Craig Murray’s testimony (with very few people allowed in attendance, testimonies overlooked or even squarely barred…), left no doubt that it was a mockery of justice like in that western movie (making a case for a kinda US tradition :o) where this woman says: “We’ll give this man a fair trial this afternoon and hang him tomorrow morning”. It was a farce like the one Mohamed El Baradei denounced in his 2011 book The Age of Deception: Nuclear Diplomacy in Treacherous Times, stating that everybody in the Iraqi government knew on March 18, 2003 that the US was gonna bomb them the next day no matter what, that it had long been in the planning and that the WMDs, whose existence the IAEA had debunked beyond the shadow of a doubt, as was later admitted (oops…) when pressure grew to a snap, were just a pretext. It was a farce like the official versions of the JFK assassination, the RFK assassination, the MLK assassination, the 9/11 terror attacks and the long list of false flags punctuating US history (USS Maine, Gulf of Tonkin, Benghazi to only name a few…)
In Homer’s days, in the VIIIth century BCE, people learnt about the past in the light of mythology. In the Vth century BCE, Herodotus and Thucydides invented history that was meant to rely on facts. It was not perfect since it allowed Napoleon to state in the XIXth century CE: “History is a pack of lies on which we all agree.” But at least we were taught in the XXth century schools that the idea was to tirelessly try to find out the historical truth. In the early XXIst century, it looks very much like the American establishment (government, red and blue alike, and corporate media) is determined to rehabilitate mythology as the “science” behind the Ministry of Truth and to act upon it no matter what, pushing political chutzpah to levels the next generations will find difficult to challenge. We’re setting long-lasting records here and there’s no doubt Julian Assange will be proud of his landmark contribution!

Craig Murray did a yeoman’s work reporting on that kangaroo court. And now the law is after him for supposedly identifying plaintiffs in the trial of Alex Salmond in Scotland. I don’t think that the charges against Murray were a coincidence.

Julian Assange should be given an international medal for exposing what many of us know to be the blatant criminal nature of the U.S. If no such medal exists one should be created. 31. What the American people fail to understand is that these whistle-blowers were trying to save their lives. The people will continue to experience first-hand the same atrocities committed against them as what occurred elsewhere while they looked the other way.

  32. As if there ever was the slightest hint of justice, truth, or ethical standard ever contained within any thing the US Sociopaths In Charge engage in. They are totally committed to evil for their own profit and gain. There is nothing you can imagine that is so evil that they will not engage in if it benefits them. Unless you too are a sociopath. They have not abandoned the human virtues, they never experienced them, and are incapable of doing so. The only purpose such virtues serve for them is as a weapon against those that possess them.

      Hear, hear. Thank you.

Well, it IS. It is also criminal.

  34. Thank you for supporting and informing us about Julian Assange – it is indeed “enraging”

  35. I hope Edward Snowden is right, and this is the end of this case, but I doubt it. The US gave up worrying about its reputation for press freedom, or anything else for that matter apart from its capacity for violence and intimidation, long ago, and the UK shows little sign of acting independently.

    1. True that, they’ll call it part of a Russian disinformation campaign if they acknowledge it at all. I don’t think anybody is coming to the rescue- at least nobody with the power to get him out. If Assange ever gets released, it’ll be as a sick old man. I hope I’m wrong about this, but if justice mattered he’d already be out- or at least have a release date.

      1. If we want Assange freed we’ll have to storm Belmarsh ourselves and take him.
