In an interview with the Washington Post yesterday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she opposed the impeachment of President Trump. This comes shortly before Mueller’s investigation into Trump-Russia collusion is expected to wrap up.

“I’m not for impeachment,” Pelosi told the Post. “This is news. I’m going to give you some news right now because I haven’t said this to any press person before. But since you asked, and I’ve been thinking about this: Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”

The response to Pelosi’s remarks has been swift and strong.

“Wrong!” exclaimed MSNBC’s Russiagate con man Malcolm Nance via Twitter. “What the hell is wrong with the @SpeakerPelosi Congress that they absolve themselves of their duty! Nothing is criminal anymore?! Trump can do and say like a dictator as he pleases? All of his crimes are OK even if you see them? This requires a public outcry. #Disgraceful”

I like Speaker Pelosi but this is NOT the right approach,” tweeted Michael Avenatti of Stormy Daniels fame. “If Trump has committed impeachable offenses, he must be charged and he must face a trial in the Senate. Would the Repubs take this approach? Hell no! And this is why we get outplayed.”

“Sorry, Madam Speaker,” tweeted Esquire‘s Charles P Pierce. “If you really believe the president* is an unprecedented threat to the Constitution, your oath demands that you begin the process to remove him. It’s your job.”

The House’s most virulent Russiagater, however, sang a different tune.

“If the evidence isn’t sufficient to win bipartisan support for this, putting the country through a failed impeachment isn’t a good idea,” said Congressman Adam Schiff told CNN yesterday.

As you might expect, those voices in alternative media who’ve been voicing skepticism of the Russiagate narrative since the beginning have been having a ball with this one.

“BREAKING: The Democrats’ Congressional leadership is realizing that their two-year Russia conspiracy theory is not going to pan out,” tweeted journalist Aaron Maté, who has been in my opinion the single most lucid Russiagate critic for a long time now.

“If Trump is literally controlled by Putin to the point where Trump is forced to act in the best interests of Russia *at the expense of the US* – which has been the prevailing claim not of Dem fringes but its mainstream – how can it be morally justified not to impeach him???” tweeted journalist Glenn Greenwald in response to Pelosi’s comments.

How indeed? Pelosi’s comments go completely against the narrative that mainstream Democrats have been selling America for over two years now, and this close to the Mueller report amount to a rejection of that narrative. Her statement is a tacit admission that she knows Russiagate is bullshit, has always been bullshit, and will continue to be bullshit.

“Is it possible that Putin has something on Pelosi?” Greenwald joked. “Or perhaps Democratic politicians and their media allies have been knowingly feeding the party base and cable viewers unadulterated, deranged, unhinged bullshit that they now can’t carry through on with the power in their hands because it was all self-serving, manipulative dreck? Anyone who has ever believed Trump is controlled and blackmailed by Putin to the point that Putin makes Trump treasonously sacrifice America’s interests for Russia’s – and there are a lot of you – should be marching in fury in the streets over Pelosi’s refusal to impeach Trump.”

But, of course, they will not. There will be no protest against Pelosi’s opposition to impeachment because those who would lead it know there will never be any evidence that could possibly lead to a bipartisan willingness in the Senate to remove him from office.

Anyone who’s paid close and intellectually honest attention to the Russiagate circus has known since the beginning that Trump was never going to be impeached for a treasonous conspiracy with the Russian government, despite the endless fantasies inflicted upon the blinkered Maddow muppets day after day after day for over two years now. Back in 2017 I said that “Mueller will continue finding evidence of corruption throughout his investigation, since corruption is to DC insiders as water is to fish, but he will not find evidence of collusion to win the 2016 election that will lead to Trump’s impeachment,” because it was obvious to anyone who knew anything. And that has proven to be the case with uninterrupted consistency.

If those who have been driving the Russiagate conspiracy theory really believed what they’ve been pushing, they would be up in arms at Pelosi’s remarks. Instead, we see responses like Russiagate grifter Bill Palmer publishing a hilarious article titled “Nancy Pelosi is playing rope-a-dope with Donald Trump on impeachment”, explaining that her remarks were actually a brilliant 57-D chess maneuver designed to “play this Trump fool like fiddle.”

“Instead, by answering the question in this manner, Pelosi accomplishes two things,” says the Palmer Report, where sitting US senators and top Harvard law professors go for the important updates they need to continue fueling Russia hysteria in America. “First, she manages to put off the question until she and her allies have managed to carve Donald Trump up. Second, she’s messing with him. She just insulted him by saying he’s not worth the trouble of impeachment. Pelosi is looking to bait Trump into publicly feuding with her over the question of impeachment. That way it’ll be Trump introducing the concept, not her. And that’ll serve to help put the impeachment process on the right track. Just don’t call it ‘impeachment’ quite yet.”

So that tells you a bit about where the Russiagaters are at today.

This all comes out, by the way, at the same time as a new Wall Street Journal report that Trump once attempted to personally cajole German Chancellor Angela Merkel into ceasing to buy gas from Russia out of fear that “it will make Europe’s largest economy excessively reliant on Russian energy.” Hardly the behavior you’d expect from a Putin puppet, but then neither are the rest of the many, many other actions that this administration has taken against the interests of Moscow.

It is right and appropriate that those few voices on the left who’ve been sharply critical of Russiagate from the beginning are now taking some time to gloat at and mock its peddlers with increasing scorn. The centrists who chose to spend more than two years forcing everyone’s energy into this blatant psyop which escalated a cold war against a nuclear superpower were wrong, and the leftists who objected to it were right. Trump’s term is more than halfway over, and Russiagaters chose to suck all the oxygen out of the room for this brainless, fruitless, worthless endeavor instead of allowing space for progressive reform and for criticism of Trump’s actual pernicious policies from the left. And they did it on purpose.

Mock the Russiagaters. Mock them ruthlessly, and never, ever let them forget the horrible thing that they did. Never stop making fun of them and reminding them how stupid and crazy they acted during this humiliating period of American history. And never stop using it as a weapon against them. They were wrong, so they should not be leading the way on what passes for America’s political left today. Skepticism was the only appropriate response to Russiagate in a post-Iraq invasion world, and those on the left who made that appropriate response should be treated with infinitely more respect and deference than those who did not.

They were wrong, we were right, and now even Nancy Pelosi is all but admitting it. Never let them forget it.

  1. This Muller investigation was never a serious attempt leading toward impeachment of President Trump. In my opinion, it was designed to make the swamp completely toxic so that his opposition would be able to prevent him from accomplishing anything significant. It was also designed to turn his supporters against him at the same time, so that they would demand his resignation.

However, it doesn’t look like it worked as planned.

  2. Russiagate is not only bullshit. It’s also sedition. And many signs are pointing to a momentous response, as soon as Mueller’s report is released. Top officials from the Obama administration, including Obama himself, may find themselves on trial in military tribunals.

  3. Russiagate is not only bullshit. It’s also sedition. And many signs are pointing to a momentous response, as soon as Mueller’s report is released. Top officials from the Obama administration, including Obama himself, may find themselves on trial in military tribunals.

  4. It would be nice if Maddow would be willing to make amends for force-feeding her viewers Russiagate for two-years like appearing on a live MSNBC special where she digs her molars into some fresh crow, and as symbolic gesture of newfound humility, a jumbo-size egg on the face (organic if she prefers)

  5. Maybe slow down there Caitlin. The Mueller report isn’t out yet. You have no way of knowing in your condescending cocksure way that Trump didn’t conspire with the Russians. Just because he may have said or done things since becoming president that are not necessarily in Russian interests, does not prove there was no conspiracy. You sound as foolishly sure of your position as those you’re criticizing. Please.

    1. Davina, it is incumbent upon the accuser to provide proof of the charges; it is not the responsibility of the accused to prove his/her innocence. So please provide evidence for the claim of Trump’s collusion with Russia.

  6. Hmmm… I think Russiagate has to be seen a greater perspective for what it is and what it isn’t.

If the Russians interfered with the US election which they undeniably did – Trump may have had an inkling, but he’s too narcissistic to operate beyond his own self interest.

However for Washington it does open up the real possibility that all the tools they’ve arrayed against democratic process in foreign countries around the world will be called into the light. How dare the Russians use our American owned social engineering technology against us! The pervasiveness of US social media giants as sanitised conversation hubs, de-facto parliaments and revenue lines for US companies + mixed with a certain national arrogance makes the US political system entirely vulnerable to a feedback loop from outside (and inside) America – on open circuits that will be defended to the death by Facebook, Google chasing data and dollars. There are too many parts of those circuits that the US Government can’t or won’t touch as a matter of national strategy or identity. Likewise the Dems are not going to pursue Impeachment for the exact reason the GOP is not going to allow a state of emergency – not because it can’t be done, but because of the collateral damage they do to themselves.

The real reason Trump should however be worried, based on the precedent set in all the prosecutions to date, and with the first line laid already by the indomitable AOC – is the potential of charges on local state tax fraud. Arguably the single greatest thread running through all the prosecutions is theme or local and federal tax fraud. State tax prosecutions being (unless I’m mistaken) beyond the reach of the White House to pardon. AOC’s disarming and detailed questions on real estate valuations is the real reason Trump should be worried.

    1. Chaos, “If the Russians interfered with the US election which they undeniably did…”

Define “interfered” and provide evidence for the claim please.

The DNC interfered FAR more in the 2016 primaries than a possible bit of routine and mild meme-posting by foreign click-bait farms in the primary and general. Clinton lost through her and her lackeys own corruption.

  7. You gotta hand it to Trump –
he pulled back the curtain on the ”Big Club”
for everyone to enjoy the dog & pony show in DC.

All the crazy BS for the last 2-years
displays the full dysfunction and corruption
of the empire in disarray and now entering collapse.

The U.S. gov. can’t even ground a new passenger jet
that has crashed twice on take-off, killing everyone on board.

So where is George Carlin when we need him-?
Right here: ”you don’t have representatives, you have owners”

  8. Why would Pelosi announce this so suddenly? Could it be because Trump just got himself embroiled in a YUGE sex trafficking scandal involving Robert Kraft? The 1% protect their own. This could be damage control.

  9. Congressman Adam Schiff, America’s modern day Joe McCarthy. He’s not done yet.

I have friends who are totally infected (Or is that infested?) with Trump Derangement Syndrome virus. When I get them going I can almost hear their hearts thumping. One friend in particular starts spitting. I like Trump as little as they do, but not to the point of hatred, nor my blood pressure goes up when I see his hair (?), pinched face and tiny hands. It’s the Democrats (I use to be one, years ago.) that make my hair stand on end. Their insane Russia baiting. They are batshit crazy and completely unhinged. Risking nuclear war, for what? Not for me.

  10. Credibility. It matters and Caitlin has earned it. I am not of the left (nor of the right) but I was attracted to Caitlin’s articles because I felt she was an honest, sincere person. And she is correct that those who have proven themselves to be without credibility must be reminded relentlessly of their lack of integrity. It is the best way to enforce credibility in the future. Russiagaters have forever proven themselves untrustworthy fools, never let them forget that. Caitlin on the other hand has proven herself worthy of respect. Let us always remember that Truth must be the highest value.

  11. “One of the major difficulties Trillian experienced in her relationship with Zaphod was learning to distinguish between him pretending to be stupid just to get people off their guard, pretending to be stupid because he couldn’t be bothered to think and wanted someone else to do it for him, pretending to be outrageously stupid to hide the fact that he actually didn’t understand what was going on, and really being genuinely stupid. He was renowned for being amazingly clever and quite clearly was so — but not all the time, which obviously worried him, hence the act. He preferred people to be puzzled rather than contemptuous.” — Douglas Adams

Trump is playing a role as he did when in the WWE as a ‘heel’ and pseudo-reality tv show.

  12. If one reads Pelosi’s statement carefully, one would notice a huge caveat. “..Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan,…”

“Unless there’s something”; Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a blowjob he got from a fan girl, and remained in office, therefore this future ‘something’ can be anything therefore the “Impeachment Show” has not been cancelled for good. Probably postponed to the next lame duck session of Congress or when Trump himself start losing some if his clickbait power.

One must remember that Trump is Zaphod Beeblebrox.

“The President is very much a figurehead – he wields no real power whatsoever. He is apparently chosen by the government, but the qualities he is required to display are not those of leadership but those of finely judged outrage. For this reason the President is always a controversial choice, always an infuriating but fascinating character. His job is not to wield power but to draw attention away from it

On those criteria Zaphod Beeblebrox is one of the most successful Presidents the Galaxy has ever had. He spent two of his ten Presidential years in prison for fraud. Very very few people realize that the President and the Government have virtually no power at all, and of these very few people only six know whence ultimate political power is wielded. Most of the others secretly believe that the ultimate decision-making process is handled by a computer. They couldn’t be more wrong.”-Douglas Adams.

Trump is the best distraction the ruling cabal could have ever hoped for.

  13. I don’t think she’s saying it’s BS at all. Assuming what you’ve labeled as Russiagate is the Mueller investigation and it’s fall out. What she’s really saying is the Republicans are going to look the other way for Trump regarding what we know so far about his corrupt activities. I also think she’s smart enough to realize that impeachment isn’t going to hel the Democrats. Impeachment takes a long time and start this point it’s better to just wait for 2020 and vote him out. Not to mention that even if you impeached Trump you’d end up with Pence which in my opinion is even worse. Politically for the Democrats they’re better off having the Trump Shit Show in the news everyday up to 2020. Pelosi knows all that.
Regarding the general idea of “Russiagate” being BS I disagree. The Mueller investigation is about Russian interference in the 2016 election. Impeaching Trump is a political issue that the Democrats are squeezing for all it’s worth much as the Republicans did with Benghazi, Hillary’s emails and Bill Cintons impeachment. It’s just politics. Big deal. I do think that Russian interfering in our elections is well worth a serious investigation. Trump won the presidency by something like 77,000 votes in a few swing states. Russian interference may well have facilitated that. That scares the crap out of me. Russia may very well be responsible for Donald Trump being president regardless of whether he colluded or conspired with them. I also think there’s no doubt that the Trump campaign would have conspired with that Russian lawyer in Trump tower had they be given the chance. Wasn’t it Don Jr that emailed that if she had dirt on Hillary he “loved it”? They just so ignorant of US law. The Russians appear to know more about US law than the Trumps do.

    1. Did you miss the bit about a TWO YEAR INVESTIGATION trying to find evidence of Russian collusion and failing ????????????? Were these investigators incompetent ???? If so, maybe you could offer them your services, show them the way, where they went wrong.

      1. Eddy, exactly.
        “Russian interference may well have…”
“May well have” has been investigated and has been found wanting. There simply is no evidence but TDS will prevent the Russiagaters from ever accepting this reality.

  14. I guarantee you that this comment is because Pelosi has already been briefed on what is in the Mueller report. It shows that Trump has been cleared of any Russia collusion in it and now Pelosi is back peddling to save what little repetition that she has left.

This confirms what we in the Socialist Equality Party were telling the working class: stop supporting the Democratic Party, the graveyard of all “progressive” movements. The fake socialists, particularly Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are just a front to lure the people back under control of the Democratic party and always have been. The Dems are so focused on revenge for the fact that Fat Hillary lost the election that, instead of governing, they have spent all of their time and energy on this vendetta. They should be asking themselves why people didn’t support Clinton and are increasingly withdrawing support for the Democrats, but they won’t go there.

  16. It’s hard to assess at this point how much damage the Russiagate hysteria has done to progressive causes and the Democratic Party itself, but I suspect that it is significant. Two years have been wasted that could have been spent directing attention to the malfeasance of the Republican Party and Donald Trump. Instead, we are now likely to see major gloating from their side, as Trump’s approval ratings rise in the wake of a blah report from Mueller. Is this what the Democratic leadership wanted all along? Well, I believe strongly in the “iron law of institutions.” What we have been witnessing is a perfect example of that law manifesting itself in the Democratic Party.

  17. I’m surprised that no one has yet mentioned how much this smells like the product of leaks out of Mueller’s team. When Schiff lowers “collusion” expectations, something is up.

    1. The “something” is a two year investigation that has turned up zero evidence. It is, was, and always has been a witch pursuit thingy.

When will the gong sound for those that want logical answers? It defies logic in a vacuum created by the deep state. The latter, is the cancer in our political system of mob rule and double speak! Money talks and “BULLSHIT” talks, That’s the mantra of the deep state. The internet use to be more open, but now, the two largest monopolies control , censor, and direct information to the highest bidder. Google-Facebook the consortium of a mafia style mentality. In the real world of politic it seems most of us take things for face value and or see that something is just not right! Here is where the order of information and ideals never mature, as lies and slogans are never realized as change….so nothing changes. Except the money changers and those that control the status quo.
It is ludicrous to think the media will ever be anything more than a mirror of cash flow, in a world that is controlled by the mafia of special interest that rape the subservient taxpayer of his or her fruits of their labors. The blood sweat and tears of the working class is kept in the dark while complacently paying those on the dole… The rich feel it also… But the carnivores of mafia cash that control the black markets go unshaved as they manipulate the electorate in the ponzi of special interest groups in the deep state. Here the worlds black market and mafia manipulate the outcomes of investigations created and designed to keep the masses distracted from the ugliness of the underworld.
Then we have the desktop junkies that make a living on the backs of the uninitiated readers of propaganda, the latter, designed to sound like truth, keeping the lies intact and the double speak alive and well, propagated by ignorance of device and counter intelligence. How can the public citizen ever see this underbelly of prophetic deception and the atomic blackmail in the undercurrent of the powers of the mafia-government traitors, swearing allegiance to non-nationalist formats of socialistic deception.
Pelosi-Trump are at opposite ends of the spectrum of democratic mob rule by the few. Each has their backers from the same pool of mafia stratum in the battle to rule for winner take all. Both are corrupted in the minutia of mafia undercurrents and reason to cooperate via default abstract enemy verses enemy… Or SPY vs SPY, a cartoon of the past is played out for all to see.
The players of money and disguise, rule as dictators vs dictators, as the pan calls the pot black! Corruption is everywhere in the good old boy network of statues erected statues in the halls of congress. The old school politicians, re-elected by the same money that rules the underworld of the deep state… The deep state of battling mafias that want to play without paying their fair share in the Tax ponzi scheme of economic Armageddon and fiat money for the money changers… The church of Pharisees and the religious order of greed incorporated… Gold is US. All others that play the game of usury and fake money, sweat and labor, for the Mafia and black markets created by the latter.
Then there is the Israeli lobby… Both trump and Pelosi share in the dole… yet, the rest of us pay to play in the love affair with rulers by day and vampires by night.
    The End

    1. Perfectly said, though he gong will never sound for logical answers as there always will be duality in the human condition. Pro and contra is like the blood that runs through the veins of a failing organism that is doomed and pruned to be part of life. Once the seekers of logical answers food source and living conditions become to harsh for comfort logic again becomes a play influenced by same criminal mob of money-changers that has a long successful tradition of deceit since the fall of Babylon – which repeats itself again as a logical action because human logic itself has failed again and again through distraction and polarising guidance by the puppeteers of the act itself. Everything changes around humanity constantly while mankind itself seems stuck in its own “logic of no sense at all and loving it until the end”.

  19. Aaron Mate has indeed been a great resource for information, focus, and analysis.
His tweet expresses the hope that the collapse of the Russiagate noise will benefit progressives. However, unless progressives drive the subsequent narrative, the only beneficiary will be Trump, who will be totally vindicated.

We can take a day or two to gloat, but we should be focusing on what our message will be next.

Pelosi has been right on this one from day one, BTW: prior to the report (and probably after) talk of impeachment is foolish.

  20. I thought someone would have posted this already:

Thanks a lot Rachel. You’ve helped Putin Make Russia Great Again!

    1. Maddow is nothing but a ratings whore. By endlessly pushing the Russiagate narrative, which she may not even believe, she has garnered the highest ratings on cable news. How will she handle the bubble bursting? Probably by ignoring it altogether and moving on to another non-scandal scandal.

      1. Carolyn Zaremba Avatar

Maddow has no credibility among serious people whatsoever. She is another shill for the corporate media objective of brainwashing everyone stupid enough to still watch it. Identity politics got her where she is today, making mucho money by obeying the dictates of corporate media and spreading bullshit far and wide.

        1. Maddow is the Hannity of the Left. And vice versa. Both are sirens for fools.

  21. Russiagate was a huge success. They do not have to have a rational arguement to confuse and deceive the general population. They do not realize they are less than dirt in the eyes of the ruling class. And we have played our role in keeping this scheme alive and in the news.

They have acheived what they set out to do – disrupt the populist trend and distract from the scam that is the DNC. The behavior that was revealed and might be inferred was un-democratic and unforgivable, but fortunately we have had that cleansed from our consciousness and now everything is awesome cant wait for next election.

Even now I see them describing Trump as a dictator. This also is ridiculous and done to create discord and confusion.

    1. Carolyn Zaremba Avatar
      Carolyn Zaremba

What do you mean, “we” have played our role? I certainly have not. I do not support anything the corporate media puts out and have gotten rid of my television to keep their brainwashing drivel out of my home. I support the World Socialist Web Site and get my news straight instead of whitewashed by the liars of the airwaves.

  22. I’m pretty sure a very large group of the ‘right’ & Republicans ran the ‘Russiagate is a bullshit Democratic Party scam’ to control, investigate, damage, remove Trump, and to cover up the activities of the previous administrations Intel & Justice depts in spying on Trump’s campaign and using the Russia narrative to help Hillary’s campaign. Wiser folks have surmised many worse characters have used it to prevent any cooperation with Russia and other non traditional allies, to keep Russia as world villain to justify NATO, NATO, etc expansion, MIC activity and expenditures, as well as a wedge to keep US, Russia and China, plus other BRICS nations, from aligning.
The impeachment move would backfire, as they know nothing major is there, but the endless investigations until 2020 keeps DC Dems & the media on the ‘Trump is a guilty criminal’ talking points, pundit analysis, inuendo, Nixon comparisons, etc, etc , you get the picture. It’s an election tactic, far more valuable than impeachment (it’s like opposition research on the taxpayers dime).

    1. “Wiser folks have surmised many worse characters have used it [Russia narrative]to prevent any cooperation with Russia and other non traditional allies, to keep Russia as world villain to justify NATO, NATO, etc expansion, MIC activity and expenditures, as well as a wedge to keep US, Russia and China, plus other BRICS nations, from aligning.”

Indeed, and don’t forget to include Russia’s relationship with Iran/Assad/ Hezbollah/Shi’a Islam, Israel’s AND Saudi Arabia’s coalition from hell. When “Grand Chessboard”, MIC and AIPAC wish lists coincide, watch out.

  23. They ALL love him now because HE’S GOING AFTER VENEZUELAN OIL!!!! Even I can see that!!

  24. Sadly, being right really doesn’t count for anything in this phony society. Reality is so convoluted by the ruling class that the majority of our citizens can’t see the forest for the trees. Trump-haters will continue to rabidly focus on him as the source of all that is wrong in the world and his supporters will continue to reflexively defend him.
Meanwhile, the exploiters will continue destroying the planet and its inhabitants in order to have an ever bigger piece of an ever shrinking pie. And laugh their asses off at the rest of us.
It’s happening right before our eyes.
