“I am with Joe Biden all the way- let’s get this country back to where it was before the orange man started destroying it!!!”, reads a viral tweet by tennis legend Martina Navratilova that was going around recently.

This idea that Obama’s vice president will restore normality to a nation that has been ruined by a highly abnormal president has been a very common sentiment among Democrats for a long time now, and it’s silly for a number of reasons.

Firstly, wanting America to go back to how it was before Trump is wanting the conditions which gave rise to Trump. This is like landing at the bottom of a well and wishing you could go back in time to a few moments earlier when you were merely falling down the well. Wanting the same status quo austerity, exploitation, oppression and warmongering that made people so angry they wanted an obnoxious demagogue to come knock over the whole apple cart in the first place is just rewinding the same horror movie to the scene right before the scene that’s scaring you.

Secondly, this fabled “return to normality” that Biden is supposedly offering is literally impossible, since normality never actually left. Normality never left, because Donald Trump is a very normal US president.

Don’t yell at me, it’s true. This is something people who love Trump and people who hate him will be equally vehemently averse to hearing, but it’s just a fact: Donald Trump is a normal US president. If hearing this upsets you your gripe isn’t with me, it’s with reality.

To be clear, this is not a good thing. Trump has kept the bloodthirsty imperialism, corporate cronyism, Orwellian oppression, neoliberal exploitation and police militarization that holds the US empire together ticking along in basically the same way as his predecessors, in some ways more egregiously and in some ways less so. For all the evils he’s helped inflict on our world he still hasn’t done anything as bad as the two wars Bush launched during his first term, or arguably even Obama’s destruction of Libya and attempted destruction of Syria during his.

Trump hasn’t even matched Obama’s deportation numbers, but he has imprisoned Julian Assangere-started the Cold Warkilled tens of thousands of Venezuelans with starvation sanctions, vetoed attempts to save Yemen from US-backed genocide, is working to foment civil war in Iran using starvation sanctions and CIA ops with the stated goal of effecting regime change, occupied Syrian oil fields with the goal of preventing Syria’s reconstruction, greatly increased the number of troops in the Middle East and elsewhere, greatly increased the number of bombs dropped per day from the previous administration, killing record numbers of civilians, and reduced military accountability for those airstrikes. To name just a few of the ways Trump has continued and expanded upon the depravity of his predecessors just as they did theirs.

Trump is a very normal president, the media just yell about this president a lot more than usual because he puts an ugly face on the horrific normal that was already there. Sure he makes rude tweets and says dumb things and has made a mess of the pandemic response, but by and large when you strip away the narrative overlay Trump has been a reliable establishment lapdog advancing more or less all the same status quo imperialist and oligarchic agendas as the presidents who came before him. There are just a lot of establishment loyalists with a vested interest in spinning the ugliness his oafishness is exposing as caused by and unique to him.

So when they say “Biden 2020, for a return to normal”, all they’re really saying is “Biden 2020, for a depravity you can sleep through”.

“Biden 2020, for a return to normal. We can’t say exactly what ‘normal’ is; it will still definitely involve military expansionism, mass murder, ecocide, omnicidal cold war escalations, crushing austerity and economic, social and racial injustice. But by golly, it’ll feel normal.”

“Biden 2020, for a return to normal. Nothing will fundamentally change, but the media will stop screaming in your face all the time about how freakishly abnormal this particular presidency is.”

“Biden 2020, for a return to normal. No, not a return to sanity, peace, prosperity, democracy and equanimity in America; America never had those things, so there’s no returning to them. We just mean we’ll return to making it easier for you not to think about that.”

“Biden 2020, for a return to normal. To when you were able to sleep comfortably through the violence, insanity and depraved psychopathy of the status quo instead of having it unpleasantly drawn to your attention by rude tweets.”

“Biden 2020, for a return to normal. A return to the days where a competent president makes important decisions in accordance with the will of the electorate. That’s right, a return to a fictional fantasy land where you can live in your imagination.”

“Biden 2020, for a return to normal. A return to the days when you could happily pretend that freakish, murderous madness spanning the entire planet is normal.”

“Biden or Trump 2020, for a return to normal. Because ‘normal’ never bloody left.”

Trump is normal. Trump is normal. Trump. Is. Normal. Trump is the thing that normal is.

And that’s precisely the problem.

It isn’t Trump’s abnormality that makes him truly heinous, it’s his normality. It’s his perpetuation of a status quo which is brutal, corrupt, and utterly fascistic. And which got there long before he did.

This is what your government is, America. This is what it’s always been. If you don’t like what you’re seeing, don’t just try to put a nicer mask on it so you can go back to sleep. Change it. Change your normal. Create a new normal.

Trump is everything America is. As one reader recently put it, “Trump didn’t make things the way they are, he is the personification of the situation. If the United States was a suit, then it was tailor made for Trump.”

Trump is normal. If you don’t like your normal, America, then push for real change, not cosmetic change. It’s not going to come from any president. It’s going to have to come from you.

  1. The only difference I foresee if Bite-me is selected as President is that he will choose to enrich a different group of cronies. But internationally, things will only change at the fringes.

Remember the first rule of politics: Economics is who gets what, but politics is who DECIDES who gets what.

  2. To quibble just a bit: “Trump hasn’t even matched Obama’s deportation numbers, but he has imprisoned Julian Assange, re-started the Cold War, killed tens of thousands of Venezuelans with starvation sanctions, vetoed attempts to save Yemen from US-backed genocide, is working to foment civil war in Iran using starvation sanctions and CIA ops with the stated goal of effecting regime change, occupied Syrian oil fields with the goal of preventing Syria’s reconstruction, greatly increased the number of troops in the Middle East and elsewhere, greatly increased the number of bombs dropped per day from the previous administration, killing record numbers of civilians, and reduced military accountability for those airstrikes. ”
The Cold War was effectively restarted by Obama with the Maidan coup and neoNazi regime set up in Ukraine, leading to his National Emergency and sanctions against Russia for the Crimean plebiscite (March 2014) with more sanctions added for Russiagate in 2016.
The ongoing National Emergency with sanctions against Venezuela was Obama’s (March 8, 2015). Obama had it all teed up, but Trump couldn’t pull the trigger and start another Forever War.
The ongoing genocide against Yemen with National Emergency and sanctions (May 16, 2012), and coming in with Saudi on the oligarch’s side in the Civil War against the Houthis is again all Obama’s. In return for suspending Saudi criticism of Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, Obama agreed to support genocide in Yemen, and wiped out 100,000 (in addition to droning an American and his children in multiple attacks).
Trump is quite reprehensible enough, and otherwise guilty as charged, without giving him “credit” for the bloodthirsty Obama.

  3. I think you’re right about the old Biden, but not the new Biden. Biden is going to work with Sanders and the progressives to come up with a New New Deal for America.

  4. The U.S. government is like the COVID-19 pandemic. Both are illusions, great manipulated deceptions and exaggerations, but with some residual basis in reality. The bulk of Americans have no clue they are being played. They think their votes count and their masks protect them. They think their government works for them and so will the coming vaccines. They think they are in control and doing the right thing. Americans are totally delusional thanks to the incessant propaganda they swim in. Unfortunately, it’s the same story for the Brits, the Aussies, the French, the Germans, and just about everyone else. The shadowy people at the top, the ones who direct Bill Gates, George Soros, Eric Schmidt, and all the other front men — they are the controllers. They control the illusions of pandemic and government through their conniving narrative. They design our brainwashing. They write the programming. They steer the direction of humanity. And they are all sociopaths.

  5. Great article, I have started reading your stuff regularly. Your writing, research and just the great flow of ideas is terrific. I’m so glad you are part of the conversation. This is my first comment and I’m thrilled to be a little red monster.

  6. As disgusting as Trump is, he is NOT the problem. He is an in-your-face symptom of the problem. He is what imperialism, unfettered capitalism and expansion have created – as directed by the oligarchs – to further the problem.
I no longer vote for the lesser of two evils. I refuse! Even if my vote, elsewhere, amounts to accomplishing nothing, at least I can go to sleep at night, knowing that I’ve made every effort to restore some semblance of sanity to this country and a world slowly going insane. Whether Biden or Trump sits in the White House, it will not make a piddling amount of difference, because their goals are primarily the same – to be puppets doing the bidding of the puppetmasters pulling their strings, but puppets with the appearance of ultimate power.
As for normal, it is those fools who desperately want to fully reopen American, who want to return to a ‘normal’ path that created the problems they now incorrectly think can be cured by a return to work. Their normal is the system of abuse under which we are now subjugated and which, unless the people respond en mass, will ultimately lead down a path to the extreme of totalitarianism. When we get there, if we do not act, Orwell’s 1984 may seem like a leisurely walk in the park. Let’s not forget, “Soylent Green IS people.”

The only difference between Trump and Biden or Hillary is that Trump makes no effort to hide the fact that he’s a delusional narcissistic sociopath, while Biden and Hillary spent decades carefully crafting themselves to appear normal when they are just as delusional, narcissistic and sociopathic as Trump.

  8. All your points are well taken and I am no friend to the Democrats, However, the Republican slant on arms control IS one substantial difference, Trump is voiding these international agreements right and left, in part to appease the arms manufacturers and the military. They can now ramp up production of weapons of mass destruction like never before. A Biden administration, while “normal” in most senses of your article, would likely want to reinstate one of Obama’s few actual accomplishments, the Iran nuclear deal, and would likely not want to destroy START etc. This would measurably make the world safer, even though it is likely not coming from any lofty goals by Biden or the Dems. Biden seems incapable of such thinking but OTOH Trump is showing increasing signs of mental deterioration as well. For example:
Trump in Allentown, PA, on Thursday: “We have the best testing in the world. Could be that testing is, frankly, overrated. Maybe it is overrated. But whenever they start yelling we want more, we want more. Then we do more and they say we want more. When you test, you have a case. When you test, you find something is wrong with people. If we didn’t do any testing we would have very few cases.”
Let’s not have any illusions. Biden will have much of the awful “Normality” of Trump and Obama before him. He will not be a good president. But if we can prevent the erosion of treaties and reinstate the Iran nuclear deal we perhaps will have prevented the world from becoming more terrible in that one sense. We should not focus on elections ( instead our own abilities to advance activism and pressure) but we can perhaps do just a little harm reduction.

    1. Really good point, I think Noam Chompsky has alluded to Trump being a threat to nuclear peace.

  9. I appreciate a real contribution in your emphasis on the stuff that has not changed with Trump. Nevertheless, there is some dangerous distortion in your stance. Bad as it is, the US government does in some ways evolve, and Trump has sabotaged the most constructive potentials for its evolution. Part of the damage is his influence on public opinion. Had any of his 6 most recent predecessors ruled the court for the last four years, advances in the public understanding of pollution and climate change and perhaps of science in general would have continued, preparing the possibilities of better policies. It is harder to argue that the US exportation of violence to other countries would have been different, but there are reasons to imagine it would have been. The US government is learning how to explain itself with more subtlety. As you say, narrative first. As it learns to talk the talk, opportunities develop for more civilized behavior. To be sure, “normalizing” is not a desideratum, but if there are no norms to return to, there may still be trends abandoned that should be resumed

  10. Let’s say that you happen to have a volkswagen factory. Every single year, every single month, every week, every day, your very own spiffy little volkswagen factory just keeps on spitting out brand new volkswagens…
Everything is simply splendid, except for one tiny detail,
You flat out cannot stand one more stupid a$$ volkswagen….
    What do you do?

    1. swap my VW factory with the Toyota factory that is owned by my neighbor who is equally tired of his life and accomplishments?

The logical flaw in supply side economics and financialization via Wall Street and London is the inevitable oligo- and monopolization and the emergence of uncontrollable, sluggish (or in some even worse cases accelerationist) dinosaurs who then become the unelected captains of human progress. Add complete and utter psychopaths at the head of these oligo-/monopolies, and .. well, you get the idea..

  11. Brilliant. You really are a genius wordsmith/social analyser Caitlin. I just wish I didn’t sort of agree with Voltaire’s comment: “Men will always be mad, and those who think they can cure them are the maddest of all”. Ten ticks for your effort and wisdom though.

  12. I’m sorry but I will vote for a hamster in a cage before even thinking about re electing some one who doesn’t believe in clean air and water or mocks handicap people in their wheel chair. Those three things don’t mean much to most because they never have stopped to think about it. If you don’t like what is apparently going down this election, then vote third party. If enough get this simple fix, then red and blue will be done hopefully for ever. Better yet, we start a new Raging Peasant Army, RPA, and toss “their “normal the f**k out.

  13. Nice work Caitlin. You are always so clear and concise.

Normal is rich and powerful people getting what they want. It has been that way for centuries. Democracy and an egalitarian society reached it’s peak some time shortly after WW2. Mainly centered around the UK, Europe and America. Since then the slide back to normal has inexorably ground on. So if anyone is asking how did people break free and how were we re-enslaved I suggest you take a history lesson from the great Tony Benn here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX-P4mx1FLU

  14. Lame duck Donald Trump is a lying, cheating, self-serving psychopath. Who can Americans look up to for leadership? No one in politics but Americans need a revolutionary leader. Read more of this here: http://www.wisdompage.com/2013%20Articles/Molyneaux%20essay.pdf

  15. “Trump is normal. If you don’t like your normal, America, then push for real change, not cosmetic change. It’s not going to come from any president. It’s going to have to come from you.”
    &nsbp;
The “you can’t handle the truth!” truth is that US voters will do absolutely anything to keep their MIC jobs. So real in-your-face-obvious change, not cosmetic change, is going to have to come to America by “special delivery”, imposed/forced on America from outside forces — either violently, as “change” was forced on Nazi Germany, or through political/economic/financial means, delivered at “slow boat to China” speed to Americans’ doorsteps via a stay-the-course, steady-as-she-goes, beat-’em-at-their-own-game strategy carried out over the long term by Russia, China, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba, etc.

“The long term” has been ongoing for at least the past 20 years. Moments of truth of all kinds are arriving as I type. For just one example, the Fed thinks that all it has to do is print literally trillions of USD out of thin air and that this “money” can instantly be used to buy literally anything or anyone on planet earth. How long will other nations tolerate this intolerable practice?

I expect “real change” to arrive at any moment.

Of course, that argument is supplied without evidence pointing out that when it comes to interference in other nations affairs that has been ongoing at least for over a century and a bit, and when it comes to social reforms the last one anything meaningful (although how meaningful can be debated: https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2020/05/13/financial-hysteria-america-and-bankruptcy-western-liberalism/) was done during the ’30s.

The legacy of Obama starting somewhere between 5 – 7 new conflicts does not speak for less warmongering among democratic presidents, neither does the real start of the Vietnam war under Kennedy.

  24. Why do I have to read an Australian blog to hear the naked truth about my own country? Yet I’m grateful I can. The additional point should be made that the history of most nations is bathed in blood, the difference being that the U.S. has gleefully turned that bath into a globe-sized, 24/7 swimming pool. Little did I know when my high school teacher tearfully told our class that the president had been assassinated, what I was actually hearing was the obit for my country itself. Once the deep state so easily got away with taking care of JFK, the continuing assassinations of prominent political and social leaders, culminating in the mass-murder of 9/11 (as a pretext for endless war abroad and a police state at home) were pieces of cake.

  26. Beautifully articulated!! Thank you!

  27. Your worst enemy is not the person in opposition to you. It is the person doing nothing while occupying the spot you could be fighting from.

We meet in the midst of a nation brought to the verge of moral, political, and material ruin. Our homes are covered with mortgages; labor impoverished; and the land concentrating in the hands of the capitalists. The fruits of the toil of millions are boldly stolen to build up colossal fortunes for the few, unprecedented in the history of mankind; and the possessors of these, in turn, despise the republic and endanger liberty. From the same prolific womb of governmental injustice we breed the two great classes: tramps and millionaires.

Upon which side will you fight? Upon the side of the idle holders of idle capital or upon the side of the struggling masses?

“This is what I have to offer to those who wish to follow me: hunger, cold, the heat of the sun; no wages, no barracks, no ammunition; but continual skirmishes, forced marches, and bayonet-fights. Those of you who love your community, your kin, follow me!”

  28. One thing you, yourself can normalize this very month is your vitamin-D level, and you can help your friends do it, too. 🙂 http://www.johndayblog.com/2020/05/vitamin-d-day.html
This is a really limited message today, which is to obtain and take 5000 International Units of vitamin D per day until you croak from old age. This is a simple and obvious public health measure, which you can do, yourself, and you can give “cheap and safe” vitamin-D tablets or gelcaps to people you would like to help.
I’m trying to buy 5000 doses of 5000 units today. The online interface says I’m doing it, but I have my doubts.
I have gone through several rounds of buying vitamin-D bottles and giving them to people for themselves and their families in the past 3 months. This time is bigger. I really feel that this is a moment of crisis, where power fations are at each other’s throats, and with no common ground for repair.
Vitamin-D for everybody can be that common ground.

Let’s say it reduces morbidity and mortality by 50%.
That’s what is speculated here, but I think it would do better than that.
    Let’s do the experiment!
10,000 IU/day”for a few weeks”, followed by 5000 IU/day thereafter is what they recommend, and it is exactly what I have recommended since early February, except I would say “a few” is 8 weeks.

    Spot on Caitlin .

  31. Wow, Caitlin – you’ve done it again! …slammed the nail smack dab on the head!!
The shit pandemic that produced Trump started a long time ago; its roots were already deep seated when they shot the best president they’d ever had and turned a blind eye. It gathered momentum through the LBJ administration, Vietnam and the coverup of the USS Liberty attack ..and the assassination of RFK before he could dig for the facts. The Hasbara Team and the Mega Group worked with the MSM to provide the cover….and then 9/11 (Pearl Harbour 2) – the facilitator for the most egregious series of events in modern history. That was Biden’s normal…I’m not so sure Trump’s can be worse!

  32. “Returning to normalcy” with Joe Biden is a pipe dream. “Normality never left, because Donald Trump is a very normal US president,” writes Caitlin Johnstone. Of course, Donald Trump stands for American imperialism and exceptionalism and all the bad things an Empire stands for. Still, he hasn’t done anything “bad as the two wars Bush launched during his first term, or arguably even Obama’s destruction of Libya and attempted destruction of Syria.” The so-called liberal media are all up in Trump’s grill because he puts an ugly face on the horrific normalcy, which has been around in the US forever, writes Johnstone. She gets the heat from the so-called left because she is considered a renegade. Caitlin Johnstone has the balls, which makes her taking.

Even AOC is now ‘on board’ the Biden choo-choo. She has accepted an official position as co-chair of thew Biden Climate Change Committee. Her job will presumably be to help formulate the lies Biden will tell to dupe the rubes, (aka” citizens), into voting for him, and then will be tossed in the wastebasket once they do, (IF they do).

The Identity Politics lesser-of-two-evils (LOTE) stupidity of the American Marionette Left knows no bounds.

These people, even the Really Good Ones, are so stupidly ‘taken in’, are now so enthusiastically dancing on the ends of their own Enemy’s strings, that there is no hope, in yet another election cycle, of mounting ANY genuine ‘resistance’.

Biden is so ‘over-the-top’ disgusting, however, that some elements of the American Left, (like the DSA), have rebelled, but their rebellion will not likely take any shape beyond ‘apathy’, beyond remaining on the sidelines.

AOC will be lucky to even survive (in office) this election. The Elites are heavily financing challengers in her district. She’s a ‘star’ though. She’ll get a job, for $150-200k or so, working for some 501C(3), financed by Soros, or some other billionaire oligarch, as a glitzy spokesperson for the downtrodden. She’ll probably stay in DC. You think she’s gonna go back to the Bronx, after being a glitzy TV star? $175k will get her a nice tidy townhouse in some fashionably gentrifying neighborhood, where she can go out for a walk and still bump into some of the ‘downtrodden’ who have not yet been driven out.

She sure had me fooled. I thought she was maybe ‘the real deal’, but once those klieg lights light up a woman’s ruby red lips with ‘glamor’, women’s hearts do beat faster. She has really good taste in clothes, and looks very good in the latest ‘feminist’ power-suit fashions.

Which can resist being a TV star? AOC for Biden. How cheaply she sold herself. “She coulda’ been somebody. She coulda’ been a contenda’ “. (Brando? From ‘On the waterfront’?) But “another one bites the dust, and another one gone, and another one gone, and another one bites the dust”. (Did any see that Dylan used that old lyric in his recently released ‘Murder Most Foul’?)

    1. We’re not the Millionaire Socialist or his woke Latinx Robin.

We’re not fucking around, you can’t buy us with a goddamn thing; they kill us, or we don’t stop coming. And they better hope we don’t rise from the grave—because we ain’t Jesus, we will fucking Bloodshot their ass.

      November 2024.

      We are coming. Expect us.

      Spread the word.

  34. It’s somewhat ironic that you post regularly about the mess we’re in (we are) and then write as if we somehow can elect someone with a magic wand to fix everything overnight. It’s taken us almost 100 years to get in this mess, a little at a time. Even IF “we the people” decided that this mess needed to be fixed and worked toward it, it will take a couple of generations to fix it. Not sure if we have the staying power. I certainly don’t agree with everything that our President has done, but he’s accomplished two things that I think will have positive generational impact. One is the transition back to a mainstreet economy and the other is getting constitutionalist judges in position.

    1. “then write as if we somehow can elect someone with a magic wand to fix everything overnight”
No idea how you could possibly get this from anything I wrote.

      1. Concerning yourself _at_all_ with the idiocies of our electoral politics reinforces them. Some of my relatives are constantly on about the awfulness of Trump. Thus they will get more Trump. Trump may do something constructive or helpful by accident, but for the most part he is just like the rest, as you say, only more blatant. The capitalist ruling class knows how to manipulate elections. If we want something different we have to do something different.

        1. “we have to do something different” but I have not yet seen anyone recommend an effective strategy for dissidents to start doing.

    2. Huhhhh?? “100 years”? How about 400 years? A “mainstreet economy”? Are you kidding. The fed giving billions to big banks and so far NOTHING to mainstreet. “getting constitutional judges in position”, In position to follow Trumps dictates???

36 million unemployed in the last 2 months.
Did you write that with a straight face?

  35. Great stuff! Thank you Sista!

One thing – real Americans try to support each other every day. They are attacked every day by the 1% that is obscenely anti-American and truly Fascist.

  36. I agree with all your comments, Caitlan. Trump is the embodiment of all US presidents. As loathsome as he is, there are some positive aspects to his presidency. To his credit, unlike his nauseatingly phony predecessor, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Barrack Obama, he makes no effort to present to the world even a veneer of human decency. Our pussy-grabbing president is accelerating the decline of the American empire by compelling Russia and China to form a powerful alliance. His efforts to fight Russia down to the last European is an approach that will at some point force them to acquire a spine and turn eastward for their own survival. He is hastening the demise of the dollar-based system of international trade which provides the US with an immense advantage. He is going to bring US hegemony to quicker end through sheer incompetence.
