Biden Continues Trump’s War On The Press

Just one day after a coalition of prominent civil rights groups made headlines with a letter urging the Biden administration to drop efforts to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States on espionage charges, the Biden administration has announced its intention to continue those efforts.

“Justice Department spokesman Marc Raimondi on Tuesday said the U.S. government will continue to challenge a British judge’s ruling last month that Assange should not be extradited to the United States because of the risk he would commit suicide,” Reuters reports.

“We continue to seek his extradition,” Raimondi said.

Assange’s arrest and subsequent charges under the Espionage Act in 2019 for what amount to standard journalistic practices which exposed US war crimes marked both a dramatic escalation in the US empire’s war on critical national security journalism and a sharp divergence from the Obama administration’s decision not to pursue such charges in this case. Biden is not just upholding Trump’s assault on press freedoms (far and away the single most egregious attack on journalism in the 45th president’s entire four years in office), he is rejecting the Obama administration’s decision not to charge Assange due to concerns that it would erode the First Amendment.

As The Washington Post reported during Barack Obama’s second term in 2013:

“The Justice Department has all but concluded it will not bring charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for publishing classified documents because government lawyers said they could not do so without also prosecuting U.S. news organizations and journalists, according to U.S. officials.”

“The problem the department has always had in investigating Julian Assange is there is no way to prosecute him for publishing information without the same theory being applied to journalists,” said former Justice Department spokesman Matthew Miller. “And if you are not going to prosecute journalists for publishing classified information, which the department is not, then there is no way to prosecute Assange.”

Nothing about this has changed. The Trump administration did not have access to any evidence that the Obama administration did not also have in 2013, it just chose to squint at the law from a different angle and legally interpret Assange’s journalistic activities as a violation of the Espionage Act. There is nothing whatsoever preventing other journalists around the world from facing the same fate under similarly dubious legal interpretations. The US Department of Justice is not going to be using other people’s personal definitions of what constitutes legitimate journalistic activity going forward, it’s going to be using its own.

Biden’s divergence from the Obama administration’s less authoritarian position on the matter should not come as much of a surprise, since he took an absurdly hard line against WikiLeaks after the first publications of the earth-shattering Manning leaks in 2010.

“I would argue it is closer to being a hi-tech terrorist than the Pentagon papers,” Biden said of Assange at the time. “But, look, this guy has done things that have damaged and put in jeopardy the lives and occupations of people in other parts of the world.”

It should also come as no surprise because, all things considered, this administration has not been much different from the previous one in terms of actual policy. The policy of regime change interventionism in Venezuela is the same. The policy of hawkishness toward China is the same. The policy of starvation sanctions against Iran is effectively the same. In a recent CNN interview Secretary of State Tony Blinken could not speak highly enough of Trump’s more incendiary foreign policy decisions like moving the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing the illegally occupied Golan Heights as Israeli territory.

There are far, far more similarities between the Trump administration and the Biden administration than there are differences. As is consistently the case with US presidents, the narratives are different, the campaign platforms are different, the political parties are different, but the actual policies and behaviors remain more or less the same.

None of this means we should stop fighting tooth and claw for Assange’s freedom: the fight is far from over. There is still time for the Biden administration to opt against appealing the UK court decision not to extradite, thereby leaving the entire embarrassing extradition attempt on Trump’s lap.

“The US may submit its Assange appeal filing by Friday to meet its deadline, but one would expect a serious policy decision to be made by the new Attorney General who, once confirmed, can review the incredibly weak case against Assange in full before making a determination,” a statement by the Courage Foundation reads. “Reports are circulating that an interim spokesperson says the Biden admin will continue the Assange case. The incoming DOJ, whose Attorney General is yet to be confirmed, can drop the charges against Assange at any time, including after this Friday’s appeal deadline.”

So we keep pushing. We cannot allow a corrupt and murderous globe-spanning empire to effectively outlaw inconvenient journalism around the world in the way it would by setting the legal precedent it is trying to set with the Assange case. If journalists everywhere know they can be extradited and imprisoned for publishing inconvenient facts about the US-centralized empire, they will largely refrain from doing so. And that is the whole idea.

Through WikiLeaks Julian Assange has revealed a lot of damning information about the most powerful entities on our planet, but by far the most damning revelation he provided was not a WikiLeaks release at all: it was the revelation that “free democracies” like the US and the UK will openly imprison and torture a journalist for telling the truth. This has been seen, and it cannot be unseen. We owe him a great debt for bringing such facts into the light. The least we can do is try to get him out of there now.

    • Correction to my last post: The protest outside the State Library will be at 5:00pm and NOT 6:30pm. My apologies.

The rally will be addressed by Julian Assange’s father, John Shipton, amongst others. From there, John Shipton will be embarking on his #HomeRun4Julian tour of regional Victorian and New South Wales towns on his way to Sydney and Canberra to demand justice for his son, Julian Assange.

Indigenous activists and 3CR Radical Radio show hosts Robbie Thorpe and Viv Malo will open the send off with Jacob Grech as MC. Introducing John Shipton, father of Julian Assange and Jerome Small, long time Human Rights Campaigner and supporter of WikiLeaks and Assange.

At 6:30pm Following the send-off, there will be the regular weekly “Melbourne for Wikileaks” (@melbourne4wiki) Vigil for Julian Assange outside Flinders Street Railway station, 1km down Swanston Street.

  • “Biden Continues Trump’s War On The Press”

The press as you call it is not in favor of releasing Assange…the vast majority of the press are sycophants for the Deep State.

The Deep State is in control of the United States. The Republican and Democrat parties are just two sides of the Deep State coin.

The Deep State doesn’t care about the unimportant internecine squabbles of the ‘two parties’ as long as their important issues are advanced (wealth and power). As a matter of fact, it strengthens the false perception that there is a choice when voting. In fact, we live under a plutocratic oligarchy.

  • Let’s play a game. If a picture is worth a thousand words… It’s time to get scrolling along with a purely random combination of topics fed into an image search engine. This is purely A musing stuff which no one should never take too seriously. Actually, no one should never take anything too seriously, IMHO. On topic? You be the judge but if you think about anything too much the mind will form previously unimaginable links because that’s what human minds do. Remember to blink more than think, I always say. Hey, I didn’t post all this garbage found from the search link, I just did a random search inquiry after reading through Caitlin’s article and the comment train thereafter. Not having anything intelligent to add I simply wandered off aimlessly like any other totally clueless puppet figurehead leader of the free world. Wanna bet the fully oligarch approved search engine would show different pics? Meh.

  • Here are some specific things about Israel that I don’t think have been peaceful in order:
    ~
    1. The assassination the Iranian General that occurred a little more than a year ago. Several others died in that event.
    ~
    2. Oh, when they attacked that ship back in the 60’s I think it was…..has an effect on subsequent warring activity.
    ~
    3. The lack of services provided for those outside their boundaries but who are nearby nonetheless and who really have claim on much of the land.
    ~
    4. The settling upon unsettled land.
    ~
    5. The disproportionate shooting…….
    ~
Need I go on, cause I will if I need to. Some things are obvious and this is one of the most obvious ones of all.
    ~
    Peace is what I want.

    • You know the rumor I heard and that is all it is, is that it was most probable that there was direct electronic Israeli involvement in the downing of the Ukrainian plane flying out of Iran on the same evening as the fine general was killed – or was it a different evening. No, I think it happened all around the same time. That was not happenstance, and why has there been no report on what really happened.
      ~
I just want the effing FACTS please, and I have had it with assassinations. What are we – barbarians? Enough is enough. Please – the facts. I want the truth to be told. Is that asking too much – …..

  • You know the time has come to just cut to the chase. I rolled the die yesterday or was it the day before, and my number did not come up.
    ~
Israel is basically the primary sources of so much disarray in the world today and if we want things to get better, then the strings connecting to Israel need to be cut.
    ~
Simple……after that is done then some strings can wind back together, but if the only lesson learned after much suffering is to cause suffering for others, then it seems to me no lesson was learned. Deserved or not, none of us should cause suffering for others, so if you do that, then it is obvious. You are not an instrument of peace.
    ~
    Time to cut the strings!

    I’m not kidding around.

  • Assange will never be released. Snowden was lucky he got stuck in Moscow; if he had gotten to Ecuador, he would have been in a US super max or worse by now but Russia has nukes and a real leader. Putin put the government back on top with the oligarchy and corporations below and the workers at the bottom, same as China. We have inverted totalitarianism, with the oligarchy and corporations on top, the government under and working for them and the workers at the bottom. Of course, we have “manufactured consent”, masquerading as democracy and it works well for the lumpenproletariat will never figure it out. Some good news though; a hot shot journalist? at the Guardian who turned his gun’s on Dr. Jordan Peterson just got fired for tweeting something negative about the middle eastern Nazi state occupier and nuclear weapons state. I have such schadenfreude for the POS.. Ya gotta luv it when a paragon of woke gets hoisted on their own petard.

well we already knew that bombing people from 30,000 feet was a vicious crap shoot. and this one was pure cruelty and mass murder.

So nobody has the right to take that away and when Julian Assange did nothing more than post the facts, the facts of some taking that away from others, he didn’t deserve the consequences of what has come to be. • Hey; Bill Maher said something like that and got cancelled. He’s on HBO now and he doesn’t say that stuff any more. Trump actually said something to the effect that the USA “ain’t so innocent and does bad shit too” in public on TV. He’s said a few other unmentionable truth’s too. Way too much of a loose cannon. He got the ruling class their tax cuts, their deregulation and a couple of hundred corporate judge’s… under the bus you go, useful idiot. If it wasn’t for covid destroying the economy, there’s no doubt he would have gotten a second term.. scary stuff but then again, so is the current useful idiot. He did prove if you didn’t know it after Ray gun and the bushter! ANY little boy can grow up to be president, in fact, you don’t even have to grow up and become mature.

OK, I’ll tell. The 3rd place in Australia I will be visiting after I depart Margaret River, and spend some time in Finke, is an island on Lake Eyre (hope I spelled that accurately… and I will not tell the name of the island). After that, it is off to Comahoohoobaabaa, or whatever that haunted place is (this is the kind of thing I used to tell my girls when they were little kids!). From there it is on to the destination, which I mentioned elsewhere, so I won’t mention it again.
    ~
After I get to Perth (oh, I mean Cairns), then I will head to New Zealand. When I get there, I will bring gifts with me to give to somebody in that great place. I can’t wait! While I’m there, I’m hoping to meet up with OMC.

These entities are 0 / infinity or take the reciprocal if you prefer – either way, it is the same difference.

  • You missed the point. The U.S. claims to be a democracy (which it is not), as it continues its increasingly slow slide toward full totalitarianism. You seem to think that’s OK. As a populace, we are supposed to stand for something higher. Instead, we become worse and worse.
Whether or not you are correct about socialist governments is irrelevant to the discussion. But, then, your mother probably never told you that two wrongs don’t make a right. Integrity comes from within and has zero bearing on, or comparison to, what others are doing. Either one (person or government) behaves as the entity it claims to be or it is a fraud perpetrated and spread by propaganda so obvious that Stevie Wonder could see it.
If you really believe what you said, you are part of the problem, not the solution.

          ~
So this is how you create a better system of verification. I wish I knew what I was fixing to say. I think it has something to do with respect. Respect for things that matter. I think this respect will materialize once we let go of materialistic thoughts and expectations that are in conflict with what we really need to treat each other with dignity.
          ~
I think when we collectively recognize that which really matters in day-to-day life, then we won’t have any trouble from spam trying to sell us something we already know is a dead end road, nor will there be the need to even go through verification.
          ~
In an ironic way it will be how it used to be when we could greet our friends and family coming home from a long journey on an airplane in the airport. There would be no concern of some sort of terrorist trying to down the plane or cause harm cause it wouldn’t even occur to us as an issue. And, this is the best part, the moment it occurred to some miscreant to do something such as this, it would be evident and steps would be taken to prevent such harm from occurring in the first place. Of course, there is no fail-safe system, so a breach could occur, but when it did, we all would concur, and that would be that.
          ~
If there are going to be so many of us living on planet earth, we are going to have to figure out a system of working together. This goes against the grain a bit of my anarchistic sentiment in many ways, but lets be practical shall we. There needs to be government. We are all here now, so what is important is figuring out how we can be harmonious with each other and with our surroundings. Those two things go together.
          ~
So, my solution is that at the end of the day the need for a verification system will be no more and can you imagine how much better that would be?
          ~
          That is the solution.

You see, Juliane Assange’s travails and travels did not commence in Sweden, but they may end there – there may be some Swedish authorities who need to be forced to face justice for committing crimes – serious crimes. It was there that he had a good time with some female companionship, and the the die was cast and the rest is history. Problem is, this female companionship thing has turned into a risky proposition these days, where you can be hung up or put in Belmarsh, cause you acted “out of line”. Know what I mean. • Caitlin, come on! What did you expect from an Obama 3.0 administration? Obama and Biden got Julian Assange in this mess. Julian’s unforgivable “crime” was the exposure of America’s heinous war crimes in occupied Iraq and Hillary Clinton’s corruption and disastrous policy at the State Department. As a critical person, you should know that it doesn’t matter whose occupying the White House. Not the guy who calls himself “President” holds the reins of power but the Deep State.
Especially now, after the Deep State got rid of Trump through rigged and fraudulent elections, which put a corrupt and criminal into the White House. Right now, a clown show is taking place on Capitol Hill. These guys are scared shitless of a possible return of Donald Trump that they started this charade. These guys would see Assange rather dead than alive.
The current administration won’t charge the fawning US media because they only publish rewritten press releases or write stories at the government’s order. The Biden administration takes all the evil decisions of Trump that suits them, and the rest will be tossed out of the window, such as closed borders and unrestricted immigration to the US. Whether the fresh AG Garland will drop the case depends on Barack Obama, not Joe Biden. Caitlin, you are absolutely right that these two fucked-up “free democracies” are damasking themselves what they really are: tyrannies disguised in the so-called rule of law.

    • Thank god someone got it. Even most journalists don’t get it. I was trained as a journalist and I get it, seems I am very alone. Today’s journalists are not real journalists because they don’t seem to investigate properly or join dots. They are basing their ideas on how life used to be or how we thought life was. Assange doesn’t only have information on war crimes but, fraud and massive, global, child crimes. Unless you investigate the secret societies that JFK spoke about and was killed for doing so, nobody gets it. I don’t call any of these people journalists anymore because they either have no clue and do not join the dots or are keeping silent and on a pay role, as it has to please their supporters. Why isn’t Caitlan joining any dots? To understand this one has to dig into the elites/Deep State driving all of this. To have had hope in the Biden Government, who is fraudulently there, when he and who he is associated with are the problem is stupid. One thing Trump confronted fake news, and you Caitlan should know that more than anyone when one has investigated the smear campaign against Assange driven by Hilary/ Obama administration. Unless one understands how members in both parties and in prominent positions have sold their souls and are complicit, you have no clue. There are far more real investigative research going on by ordinary people on the ground who have a curious and questioning mind than so-called journalists. The left has been infiltrated in most countries. Keep up with the times Caitlan, for they have changed.

  • Aside from Assange being prosecuted for real journalism, he is not a US citizen, and committed no so called “crimes” on US soil. The US Psychopaths In Charge and their UK lackeys have therefore claimed jurisdiction over every one on the planet.

  • I have learned from a great and very kind man that Fascism is the profit system taking the gloves off. Now that the profit system is ending, our friends in Washington will be doing every fascistic thing they can get away with to stop it from dying. To me that is why Biden is worse than Obama. I am not surprised by what Biden is doing to Assange, just horribly disappointed. There are still good reasons why the fight to free Assange can succeed and I agree with Caitlin Johnstone the fight should continue unabated.

    • Obama was worse because he pretended to be better. We all know what Biden is. The Assange case is one more instrument to use against the Established Order, and Biden is a better target than Mr.. O.

  • Orwell: “Political language . . . is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable.” Control the language, control the world. Control the narrative, control the world. Control the media, control the world. First, they came for the Conspiracy Theorists, and not enough realized the long-term goals of the (star chambered) conspirators. Next, they came for those daring to even speak Truth to Power, and not enough realized the long-term goals of the (star chambered) conspirators. Then, they came for. . . .

  • I was just thinking yesterday that we are overdue for an Assange article. Looking forward to your article on Yemen in the next couple days. Not sure if it will come before or after the next propaganda article.

    • The Rogue’s handlers have her on a very tight leash of late…

  • ‘Biden said of Assange at the time. “But, look, this guy has done things that have damaged and put in jeopardy the lives and occupations of people in other parts of the world.”‘
Eh? That’s a highly dubious assertion; many would say it’s crap. What isn’t in the slightest doubt is the jeopardy in which US foreign policy has put the lives of millions around the world. Foreign policy Biden, as vice president, was jointly responsible for, like the bombing of Libya and the invasion of Iraq.

    • My mistake! – Biden wasn’t VP when the Fatherland invaded Iraq. He did support it, though.

  • fake news

  • Ms Johnstone, there are very few- if any- ” real democracies ” on the planet earth.
Governments will call themselves lots of nice sounding names but they all tend to be very evil dictatorships when you look behind the curtains of ” the charade “. Mr. Assange is just another person in the long line of persons that governments oppress to keep other people in fear for their lives for ever opening their months or their thoughts with anything be praise for the owners and the masters of humanity.

  • Looking back on my life I’m amazed at all the stupid and foolish things I Have thought and done. Given a chance, and blessed with the opportunity, I would like to make amends for those things. Imagine making life better for billions of people and actually being in a position to do it.

  • No surprise
Hillary would castrate Joe if he failed to bury Assange.

    • She probably has many ex staff on his team feeding Biden her agenda items to sign. Shd is probably the current Rasputin.

      • Rasputin, who advised the Tsar not to get involved in World War 1, was far less bloodthirsty. Klintonova would have been all for it.

    • Seems like he’s already a eunuch!

  • Thank you for this article, Caitlin. I have been saying this until I am blue in the face, but my acquaintances who regard the election of Biden/Harris to be the second coming of Christ go purple with rage and call me all kinds of names and unfriend me on Facebook, etc., etc. None of them has a serious political thought in their head, none of them concern themselves with the past records of those politicians they support under the misguided rules of identity politics. And yet they feel qualified to vilify the likes of you and me for telling the truth. Oh, and Julian Assange for doing the same.

    • It’s nothing more than a teem sport to them. Red vs Blue. Doesn’t matter who’s right or wrong. Nor does it matter that all the players are employed by the same league. “I picked this teem because it told the lies I preferred to hear” is about the extent of political acumen involved.

  • Let us be realistic: We can keep pushing forever but that will not stop a corrupt and murderous globe-spanning empire. On the other hand, the world’s great Liberator promoted a brilliant, practical, effective strategy for subverting and defeating this evil empire and liberating all the oppressed laborers and slaves. This strategy is destined to succeed when people take note and put his strategy into practice. Read more of this here: http://www.wisdompage.com/2013%20Articles/Molyneaux%20essay.pdf

    • There is no such thing as “pushing” a capitalist and imperialist power to do anything that does not support imperialism and capitalism. The Socialist Equality Party and the WSWS have been telling people this for decades. The choice is socialism or barbarism. We’ve got barbarism. Want to change that? Become a Marxist.

      • So are we to assume that socialist governments don’t hold guns to people’s heads and force compliance with their edicts? Or that anyone who achieves authority in a socialist government is qualified for sainthood? Governments are one and only one thing. Bands of psychopaths with “true believers” in their wake, and bands of goons with guns in their service who hold guns to peoples heads and force them to comply with whatever insanity they are peddling today. They brand themselves as “capitalists” or “socialist” in order to corral the needed number of the above mentioned “true believers”. Government of any kind has never demonstrated any expertise or efficiency in anything other than killing people. Which they are indeed quite good at.

        • You are not talking about socialist governments you are talking about criminals. There have been a few good governments, a very few.

          • I’m talking explicitly about any government regardless what badge they wear. You may be right that there have been good governments, I just haven’t seen any evidence of such. Perhaps because in addition to being rare, they likely don’ t last any longer than their benevolent dictator does, when they are replaced with a more normal malevolent one.

          • reCaptcha also put this reply to JWK here by error – that’s two. I’m really getting tired of this nonsense.

  • The Capitol is preparing for Martial Law !

You would have to blind not to realise this !
